mercutio | `probably not | [12:40] |
cpet | i removed old emails not sure if that does something | [12:46] |

erratic_ | hey I was wondering if anyone could reccomend any articles that goes through in detail and explains the latency I experience on my connection from here in Greece to Arp back in LA
I was reading a little about transatlantic cabling but it wasn't revealing if anything it seems to indicate that I'm getting screwed but I'm just curious I don't really understand or need to just want to know... kinda curious to learn about where the internet is going and why it is the way it is | [12:52] |
shat | up_the_irons: you around today?
left you a voicemail yesterday | [13:02] |
cpet | erratic_: normally you buy a vps close to where you live
farther you are the longer it takes for packet to get to destination completely normal now if arp has some links in europe then your ping would be shorter but i really dont know i would wait for up_the_irons to give you a better anbswer | [13:04] |
mnathani | s/anbswer/answer | [13:07] |
BryceBot | <cpet> i would wait for up_the_irons to give you a better answer | [13:07] |
cpet | im on sat inet so going back to correct stuff takes to long to wory about | [13:07] |
mnathani | cpet: what kind of latency do you experience to ARP? | [13:08] |
cpet | i dont have a vps with arp
i came in here to see if theres a reason that my request was removed | [13:09] |
mnathani | ok | [13:11] |
cpet | but pinging arp i get a ping of 2-3000
but this is sat link so thats normal heh | [13:11] |
mnathani | I would go insane with that kind of latency
probably worse than dialup? | [13:12] |
cpet | its what we got | [13:12] |
mnathani | wherabouts? | [13:13] |
cpet | middle of the gulf
i work offshore so we have 512K inet with a ping of 2-3000 higher if raining or bad weather hilaurious when using ssh | [13:13] |
staticsafe | ouch | [13:17] |
mnathani | how many folks using the net at the same time? | [13:17] |
staticsafe | have you tried mosh? | [13:17] |
cpet | about 20 | [13:17] |
mnathani | https://mosh.mit.edu/ | [13:18] |
cpet | i know what moish is
its on my list of shit to do when I get home | [13:19] |

erratic_ | im whaling on the moon
i carry a harpoon but there aint no whales so we tell tall tales and sing our whaling tune | [13:35] |
cpet | thats cute
ill put it on my list of useless stuff on irc :P | [13:48] |
erratic_ | I'd send u an ascii pr0n but this primitive freenode server cant handle the sendq of my mighty client | [13:50] |
cpet | could always send it to me by b bs | [13:50] |
erratic_ | man I gotta go to sleep, got a few answers on nanog
l8rs cpet: wasnt really looking for an obvious answer, but at the same time didn't expect a right or wrong one either so *shrug* goodnight | [13:53] |
cpet | well latency has nothing to do with the cable its the distance
this is why you locla net has a ping of 87 and pinging russia give me a ping of alost 9000 | [13:56] |
erratic_ | yeah but if you read what they say about the whole thing end to end on wikipedia (I know not great but... what else is there) the latency from NY to UK is <60ms
here just a sec en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transatlantic_communications_cable | [14:00] |
BryceBot | Transatlantic communications cable :: A transatlantic telecommunications cable is a submarine communications cable connecting one side of the Atlantic Ocean to the other. History When the first transatlantic telegraph cable was laid in 1858 by businessman Cyrus West Field, it operated for only three weeks; subsequent attempts in 1865 and 1866 were more successful. Although a telephone cable was discussed starting in the 1920s, to be practic | [14:01] |
erratic_ | I'll check back tomorrow for response seriously have to lay down now | [14:02] |
cpet | i havent slept well since i got on here 2 weeks ago | [14:03] |

brycec | s/useless stuff on irc/IRC/ | [15:01] |
BryceBot | <cpet> ill put it on my list of IRC :P | [15:01] |
brycec | redundant redundancy removed :D
I can tell you that's not the way up_the_irons or ARP runs, so if it disappeared, I'd assume technical or user error. For starters, emails get an autoreply. If you didn't get that autoreply, cpet, then your email was not received for whatever reason. | [15:02] |
mercutio | erratic_: latency shouldn't be high
i can't see any pastebin of traceroute. | [15:08] |
oh oyu have to top post in support mails
maybe that's the issue? | [15:19]
brycec | mercutio: cpet stated he "sent a ticket", nothing there about replies | [15:20] |
mercutio | hmm
yeh true | [15:20] |
brycec | (This is why up_the_irons added the auto-reply) | [15:20] |
mercutio | oops :) i should try and stop doing one word messages. | [15:20] |
brycec | lol | [15:21] |
mercutio | yeah i looked for auto-reply and didn't see anything. but i haven't mailed support recently. | [15:21] |
brycec | it's
ok I have, and I promise you there is one. It even links to related KB articles | [15:21] |
mercutio | oh actually i've seen that. | [15:21] |
brycec | Those articles usually say "if none of this worked/in order to request this/etc email support@"
And then I shout at the email "that's exactly what I'm doing, you nitwit" | [15:21] |
mercutio | i had heaps of sales receipts crowding my inbox | [15:22] |
brycec | heh | [15:22] |
mercutio | heh
i'm still hoping this fb guy messages me back with something useful. i'm hoping that facebook can improve their dns server selection :) i figured emailing had more than 0% chance, like just hoping in the back of my mind. | [15:22] |
....... (idle for 31mn)
cpet | well i foind one of the problems
for some reaons it didint update my emial the first time now i see all my other requests etc.. weird | [15:54] |
mercutio | weird. | [16:08] |

mnathani | when is the use of fsck warranted vs necessary vs recommended? and what does it accomplish? | [20:53] |
.... (idle for 15mn) | ||
mercutio | fsck doesn't really help
it's more it can tell you if there is issues the main time fsck can help is when you have sudden power loss, but ext file systems can get corruption then anyway fortunately usually you only have zeroed files | [21:08] |
brycec | "fsck" is a generic term and a basic program that calls fsck.$filesystem for the given device. So what it does, its semantics, etc can vary between filesystems, eg fsck.xfs vs fsck.ffs
Generally speaking, it checks and if possible repairs a filesystem (depending on command-line switches, etc) Warranted: Same as necessary. Necessary: whenever there's corruption (or a risk thereof). Recommended: Periodically. | [21:20] |
