erratic: Since 224.0.0.1 is the generic "all hosts" address, it's not easy to say what it's being used for. Your best bet is a tcpdump of the traffic, as well as to see what's listening with a command like lsof or netstat

erratic: You might see (as most Linux users do) a simple "igmp query v2" packet. This is common in default Linux configurations and as I understand it, it's just the kernel looking to see if there's an upstream IGMP router/forwarder [08:07]
