m0undshaha, staticsafe - my outfit on connery was assigned a squad for the emerald vs connery server smash on 9/6 :) [18:45]
staticsafenice [18:45]

mnathaniWhats a really good hosted monitoring tool / service? Doesnt have to be free. I am looking to run checks on web, mail, dns servers etc + up/down host notifications [19:44]
brycecTo clarify, does it have to be 3rd-party, versus setting up your own off-site monitoring? [19:46]
m0undsumm, people seem to like pingdom for RUM and uptime monitoring
but munin hosted on another box grabbing data from the boxes being monitored would work too
i've heard good things about this svc: https://www.serverdensity.com/server-monitoring/
[19:47]
brycecDoes ARP use such a service? Or am I just confusing the paging service? up_the_irons [19:49]
..... (idle for 24mn)
mnathanibrycec: for setting up my own, nagios or icinga would probably be the way to go. However, I am looking for a reliable 3rd party to monitor specific services, kind of like a hosted nagios. [20:13]
....... (idle for 33mn)
mercutiomnathani: there's nodeping and pingdom
there are a few more probably too.

m0undsi use exactstate for uptime monitoring. i think they can do some limited svc testing too (internet-exposed svcs) [21:44]
........ (idle for 36mn)
up_the_ironsbrycec: i use pagerduty [22:20]
...... (idle for 25mn)
brycecDo they monitor individual services, a la mnathani's question? [22:45]
up_the_ironsbrycec: no, we have an internal nagios that upon certain failures will alert pagerduty [22:46]
brycecup_the_irons: what happens when s* go down and ARP is in the dark? [22:47]
up_the_ironsbrycec: pingdom also monitors some things and alerts pagerduty. pingdom, being offsite (obviously) and running tests in multiple locations, provides enough alerting for our "oh shitballs" scenario [22:49]
brycecSo that's another +1 to Pingdom [22:49]
up_the_ironsyeah [23:03]
mnathaniThanks: mercutio brycec up_the_irons & m0unds - Some interesting services / solutions I need to check out [23:17]
..... (idle for 20mn)
jbergstroemm0unds: adding first2know.net to the mix
"only" http/ping/dns but thats a feature in my book :)
