Whats a really good hosted monitoring tool / service? Doesnt have to be free. I am looking to run checks on web, mail, dns servers etc + up/down host notifications
To clarify, does it have to be 3rd-party, versus setting up your own off-site monitoring?
umm, people seem to like pingdom for RUM and uptime monitoring
but munin hosted on another box grabbing data from the boxes being monitored would work too

Does ARP use such a service? Or am I just confusing the paging service? up_the_irons
brycec: for setting up my own, nagios or icinga would probably be the way to go. However, I am looking for a reliable 3rd party to monitor specific services, kind of like a hosted nagios.

there are a few more probably too.
i use exactstate for uptime monitoring. i think they can do some limited svc testing too (internet-exposed svcs)

brycec: no, we have an internal nagios that upon certain failures will alert pagerduty
up_the_irons: what happens when s* go down and ARP is in the dark?
brycec: pingdom also monitors some things and alerts pagerduty.  pingdom, being offsite (obviously) and running tests in multiple locations, provides enough alerting for our "oh shitballs" scenario
So that's another +1 to Pingdom
