plett: There are lots of FreeBSD users in here, has anyone tried using bhyve yet?
pyvpx: no one I know has tried it just yet
I'm a couple weeks away from giving it a go on a 5+ location deployment
plett: pyvpx: Will that 5+ location project be virtualising FreeBSD on FreeBSD? Or will you be using a variety of OSs as guests?
pyvpx: FreeBSD on FreeBSD
plett: I'm interested in doing Linux guests on FreeBSD. I'll have to find some spare hardware and have a play

pyvpx: I'll probably succumb to trying that out as I'm sure there's at least one or two software packages I wont get humming in FreeBSD right out the box
I'll be sure to let you know
plett: The original project was to deploy email servers on FreeBSD instead of Linux so we can put the mail store on ZFS, but puppet on FreeBSD is causing us problems, meaning that we can't deploy our standard mail server setup in the way we're used to doing
***: jpalmer has joined #arpnetworks
pyvpx: what's up with puppet?
-: pyvpx keeps seeing more and more people look for puppet alternatives
plett: I don't know the details as that's not my side of the project, but I think the pkgng support is still very new and doesn't work well
***: joepie91 has joined #arpnetworks
pyvpx: hmm, that's a shame.
-: pyvpx firmly believes the world could use a little less linux
plett: Since we're having problems, the project appears to be migrating to "how can we get the data on ZFS while also using Linux for the apps since we can manage that?"
And file access over networks is slow and awful
pyvpx: what feature of ZFS are you/your team most interested in exploiting?
plett: It's being able to use SSDs as ZIL and L2ARC read/write caches in front of big slow disks
We've found that email access is very unevenly distributed. If an email is accessed once (i.e put into a mailbox) it is likely to be accessed again (i.e. read by clients) within a minute or two
pyvpx: indeed
plett: However, if an email has gone for a few hours without being accessed, it's likely to not be accessed for many months
And also ZFS data integrity with data scrubbing etc is a nice thing to have
We're using ZFS elsewhere in the company and find it to be lovely, but we're only using it as the backing store for an NFS server

JC_Denton: probably a silly question, but what's the response time on the Contact Us form usually like? (for sales questions)
m0unds: not certain - i've never used it myself
but your rdns is awesome
JC_Denton: thanks :)
glad someone got the reference ;-)
m0unds: my fav game ever :)
JC_Denton: indeed
i'm curious if the GOG version is better than the Steam version
been itching for a replay
m0unds: i think it's the same
iirc, i had to use the same hacky method to keep it from running at light speed on a modern pc
my last playthrough was a couple years ago though, so it could have changed
JC_Denton: never really went the full-on stealth route
i feel like that's pretty hard to do
m0unds: yeah, it's super difficult
but pretty rewarding
i did it in dxhr, but i don't think i was able to finish original dx fully stealth
JC_Denton: i still need to play HR. been wanting to drop an SSD in before i mess with it.
m0unds: it's so good
JC_Denton: i feel like i overly perceive massive frame drops and it drives me nuts.
m0unds: ah
JC_Denton: my box is a legacy monster for games
old LGA775 3ghz quad, 8gb, dual velociraptors, 690 GTX
m0unds: ah, gotcha
JC_Denton: figure the SSD will breathe some new life in without going full bore
m0unds: yeah, they're getting more and more affordable too
JC_Denton: what kind of service do you have with ARP?
m0unds: VPS
JC_Denton: like it?
m0unds: yeah, no complaints. solidly reliable
customer since june of last year. lots of other folks in here have been around way longer
RandalSchwartz: My client and I have 4 VPS and one dedicated
for about 5 years now
JC_Denton: how's the dedi?
