[14:12]
mus1cb0xsince enabling the green bar/clock in tmux, i've had a stable connection to my vps with the strict pf ruleset
something like 5 days now with no d/c, unheard of before
[14:14]
m0undsthat's weird [14:15]
mus1cb0xso it's most likely an issue of my pf firewall timing out state and terminating the connection [14:15]
m0undsyeah, could be [14:15]
mus1cb0xwhat're you up to today m0unds? [14:15]
m0undsworking
well, sort of working
(not really working at all)
how about you?
[14:15]
mus1cb0xreloading /.?
mmm, just starting my day really
[14:16]
m0undshaven't touched slashdot in years
haha
[14:16]
mus1cb0xwhere do you get your nerd news? [14:16]
m0undsdepends on the topic, i guess [14:18]
..... (idle for 24mn)
plettmus1cb0x: It does sound like a stateful firewall closing an idle session too soon
In my world it's normally cheap residential NAT'ing routers doing it, but it could be an overzealous pf
[14:42]
............. (idle for 1h3mn)
mus1cb0xplett: i am running through a cheap pos isp provided router/wap
i'll be looking into the possibility of it being pf in a couple of weeks. will report what i find
[15:46]
m0undsprobably not your CPE if you're able to stay connected to other vms without timing out
i think your suspicion about pf on the arp vm is probably right
[15:48]
mus1cb0xword
i'm sure glad to find it's a software problem and not arp. would suck to see quality dip
[15:48]
m0undsif you have a static ip, you could always skip traffic from your home connection [15:49]
mus1cb0x# Allow SSH/SFTP (22) in from trusted
pass in quick on $pub_if inet proto tcp from $trusted_hosts to $pub_if:0 port $trusted_in_tcp_services flags any keep state
that's my pf rule governing ssh in
skipping trusted entirely, earlier on, is an interesting idea
[15:50]
..... (idle for 23mn)
can anyone see why that rule would be silently breaking my pipe? [16:14]
m0undsdoes ssh from osx send keepalives by default?
or maybe enable them in your sshd config or something
[16:15]
............... (idle for 1h13mn)
mercutiomus1cb0x: do you have a modem with nat?
oh someone else said something earlier :)
or just remote the pos isp modem
s/remote/remove/
[17:28]
BryceBot<mercutio> or just remove the pos isp modem [17:29]
m0undsit's probably not that device because there's no issue with a vm at another facility
haha
i'm torn. i don't want to be at work, but i don't want to be at home with a broken air conditioner.
[17:31]
mercutiooh
with a different OS?
i had problems with nat on a modem to some hosts and not others before
[17:36]
m0undsm0unds shrugs [17:37]
mercutioi just route from modem these days [17:38]
brycecm0unds: So go hang out at a Starbucks or similar :p
Then again, I'm at work too...
Much better Internet than a Starbucks.
[17:48]
m0undshahaha, yeah
m0unds is abusing internet access to stream netflix
[17:50]
brycecI'm sure it's really hurting your $employer :p [17:50]
m0undsyeah, haha
my little 1mbit stream is draining the internet right out of our gigabit tuubs
[17:51]
brycecYou're only sucking down 1mbps? Ouch. [17:52]
m0undscould do 100
but i set netflix to only do 1mbit
haha
[17:52]
brycecBut the quality! [17:52]
m0unds(the switch i'm on is an old 3750 100baset switch)
tiny little window in the corner of my screen doesn't need ze quality as much
[17:52]
brycecoh tiny window [17:53]
m0undsyeah, i've got cameras in my office
don't wanna look too unproductive
[17:53]
brycecIMHO there's nothing less-productive looking than someone sitting at a computer
But that's because I know just how anti-productive one can be on a computer
[17:53]
m0unds90% of my job involves sitting at a computer
but to the left of my left pc monitor i can see my surveillance client and any alerts or anything that i need to address
[17:54]
................. (idle for 1h20mn)
mus1cb0xbrycec: what about watching someone looking at a computer? :P [19:15]
m0undshaha, ask my dept manager [19:16]
bryceclol, that's still more productive than the least-productive you can be on a computer [19:17]
