WhoWhatWhen
mus1cb0xk i have :05
shutdown started, great
stopping services
buffers sync'd
done, clean and nice
[00:05]
***pjs has quit IRC (Quit: EPIC5-1.1.2[1638] - amnesiac : Instant asshole - just add alcohol) [00:06]
........... (idle for 50mn)
mus1cb0xcan you mention with the server comes back up so i can ensure my vps/services came back up also? [00:56]
ok it's up [01:06]
up_the_ironsi'll tweet when the maint window is over [01:08]
mus1cb0xah yea i don't use twitter [01:10]
mercutiodamn that's an expensive chair [01:12]
mus1cb0xyea and with a sysadmin manning it, can you imagine the smell? [01:13]
mercutioi want a new chair, but it seems "good" ones are around $800 here
of course everyone has a different idea of good
[01:13]
mus1cb0xthe fibers of that thing have to be literally fused with particles of BO
tried a knee chair?
[01:13]
mercutioare you saying up_the_irons smells?
yeah i hate knee chairs
i just want a chair where it doesn't lose density in the middle
and is comfortable
[01:13]
up_the_ironsLifeform is good for that, but expensive [01:14]
mercutiobut 350 to 400 chairs are pretty average
so i have a 50'ish chair
[01:14]
mus1cb0xi'm saying a living creature spending hours per day in close contact with something, in LA no less, is going to create odor fusion
so yes
[01:15]
mercutiowhich is below average and losing desnity [01:15]
up_the_ironsi actually haven't used the chair much at all, which is why i'm selling it. i thought i'd like a "plush" chair, but turns out my back likes something way more firm (like a Steelcase or Humanscale chair) [01:18]
mus1cb0xhttp://store.steelcase.com/products/Gesture-stock/
insane
"a new sitting experience"
(HAHAHAHA)

gizmoguymercutio: survive the night ? [15:05]
mercutiogizmoguy: had a long power outage
and the roof came off the carport
[15:08]
gizmoguyoh no :(
we had solid power
[15:08]
mercutiowell ok, only a little piece of it [15:09]
gizmoguyjust lots a couple trees from the yard [15:09]
mercutiothere wasn't really anything i could do though
i knew there was a strong possibility of it happening
oh was it bad down that way too?
also, 2degrees 3g sucks
i was trying to use it this morning, it was extremly slow
[15:09]
gizmoguymercutio: yup quite bad down here too [15:10]
mercutioi suppose it was 8 am or osmething
it's been fine when i've tried to use it before
i suppose 8am in a power outage congests.
but it was much faster after the earthquake in chch
so are you getting gigabit fibre gizmo?
[15:10]
gizmoguymy RFS date is a year away...
also
[15:13]
mercutioapparently hamilton is gbetting gigabit from july :/ [15:13]
gizmoguywe've already had confirmation from UFF engineering that it won't be ready in july [15:13]
mercutiofor $65/month to wholesalers.
haha
well this press release is from today
and its ays july :/
[15:13]
gizmoguyYes
it's from their CEO
[15:13]
mercutioheh [15:13]
gizmoguywho apparently just wants to get some publicity ;) [15:13]
mercutioi don't like where thigns are going
like all these new plans with higher download and slower upload
it discourages cloud file storage, and encourages mad torrrenting
whilst not maintaing ratios
there's no fibre here for a while too
UFB deployment dates for your area are still being developed
[15:13]
gizmoguylol [15:16]
mercutioso yeah no date yet
i wasn't in a ufb area at all where i used to live
but i'm just as far from city here, and yet it's ufb area
actually i think i'm a bit further away but closer to motorway
[15:17]
gizmoguyStatus Planned
All Services Available 01-06-2015
my address
[15:17]
mercutiooh not much different, 20.8km vs 23.3km
but still a little further out
i probably wouldn't get fibre even if i could, cos 12 month contract, and i'm renting and all
wow, i just checked hamilton weather forecast
38 mm of rani/hour at 10pm apparently
[15:17]
..... (idle for 23mn)
gizmoguyYeah. it was wet [15:44]
mercutiothat's for tonight [15:44]
gizmoguyoh right
it's dry at the moment
but yeah it'll be wet again
[15:44]
mercutioit's dry here too
it's not even windy
it's strange :)
apparently there were 78 power outages

like 50% packet loss sometimes
[19:59]

they all suck
[20:28]

amazon ec2 seems nice pretty much anywhere though

mercutioi used to have slow amazon ec2 performance
like 300k/sec slow
it's still kind of slow normally with sites on ec2
it doesn't help that most are US east coast.
i can't think of any amazon ec2 sites off hand
oh netflix, but that seems to be on us west.
[21:32]
acf_http://ec2.acfsys.net/videos/comme_un_enfant.webm
if you want to test
24% [========> ] 27,110,676 3.37MB/s eta 53s
it's okay for me atm. maybe they fixed it?
[21:37]
mercutio2250k/sec
so yeha it's fine now
oh that's us west anyway
us east i was talking about :/

mnathaniwhen did reddit start using akamai
I always thought they used the Amazon cloud
[22:27]
.... (idle for 17mn)
mercutioi think they use both [22:45]
milkiits always good to have multiple providers [22:52]
mnathanidont think you can send writes to akamai directly
like new stories etc need to be processed
before they can be cached by a CDN
