up_the_ironsmercutio: just not done with the config
but there *was* a problem. had them make some VLAN ID changes (which took forever it seemed) and in the process they musta put my port somewhere else, or just rolled the fiber for no reason. cuz it was up b4 the change, but after it was down/down. Had grepidemic roll the fiber last night and that fixed it (up/up).

m0undsyeah, i couldn't tell where the water was coming from because it looked like it was coming from everywhere
shut it off, didn't see anything amiss, so i turned it back on and soaked myself trying to find where it was spraying from
[14:17]
brycecheh, been there [14:28]
m0undsi was slightly annoyed when i got back from home depot only to discover one side of the water inlet from the wall is soldered

up_the_irons: i always expect these thigns to take longer than they should, but they seemed to extend that a bit
it's kind of like a plumber taking a long time to replace a washer in a tap
sure it's not very exciting bringing up new connections, but it's part of their core business

m0undsanyone seeing some kinda gnarly packet loss via v4?
actually, via v6 too
path via nlayer looks fine, but ntt looks horrible
[20:31]
mercutiomy forward path to arp via ntt is fine
13. ge-0-7-0-24.r04.lsanca03.us.ce.gin.ntt.net
hitting that
[20:35]
m0undshitting this: ae-3.r05.lsanca03.us.bb.gin.ntt.net
i'm seeing ~30-65% pkt loss
[20:36]
mercutioso yeah different way in i imagine [20:36]
m0unds_having a hard time interacting w/my ssh session on that [20:37]
mercutiodo you hit lsanca19 first? [20:37]
m0unds_doesn't appear that i do, but like i said, dropping so much traffic i can barely get keystrokes into the vm
haha
[20:37]
mercutiocos it has two ntt hops for me [20:37]
m0unds_i just have one as far as i can tell, one with rdns anyway [20:37]
mercutiohmm
well my one says ge and yours says ae
[20:37]
m0unds_nope, two [20:38]
mercutiosuggesting that your link is higher speed [20:38]
m0unds_i just wasn't getting rdns bc of the pkt loss
i have the same r04 one you do, before ae-3.r05
[20:38]
mercutioahh i'm tracing from outside arp into arp [20:38]
m0unds_i'm going arp out, try that [20:38]
mercutioto where? [20:38]
m0unds_try pulse.m0unds.net [20:38]
mercutiocos for me it's only ntt to arp
nto from arp out
[20:39]
m0unds_outbound path from that host to arp is via nlayer which is really solid [20:39]
mercutiothat looks fine for me
no loss at all
maybe it's your host
do you get packet loss everywhere?
[20:39]
m0unds_nope
just to arp
[20:39]
mercutiono on arp [20:39]
m0unds_oh [20:39]
mercutiofrom arp to everywhere [20:39]
***bonraton has quit IRC (Quit: leaving) [20:39]
m0unds_i was getting loss from arp -> fb arp -> google arp -> other boxes i have [20:40]
mercutioyeah
so it's most likely your node having issues
or your virtual machine
rather than ntt
cos everything won't go over ntt
like google.com is going over any2ix
[20:40]
m0unds_does your outbound path take you out s7.lax.arpnetworks.com? [20:41]
mercutiodo you get packet loss to arp.meh.net.nz
which is my host on arp
yeh s7 is second hop
[20:41]
m0unds_20% [20:41]
mercutiowhat about loss from your home to arp.meh.net.nz? [20:42]
m0unds_looks fine too, same path as to mine
via nlayer
[20:42]
mercutioi'm on kvr15, but have no idea how to find someone else on the same kvr as you
yeh so it's node or host
do you get loss to your first hop/
[20:42]
m0unds_yeah, 8-20%
it's almost 70ms first hop
[20:43]
mercutiodo you know what kvr? [20:43]
m0unds_haha
26 iirc
[20:43]
mercutiowow [20:43]
m0unds_might be 27 [20:43]
mercutioi imagine someone ddosnig probably :/
or some other annoying issue like that
[20:43]
acf_maybe check loss to the kvr itself?
kvr10.arpnetworks.com
[20:44]
mercutiohow do you nkow he's on kvr1)?
10
[20:44]
m0unds_yea, trying to do that now [20:44]
mercutiobut that's a good idea [20:44]
m0unds_i think he was just giving a for instance
haha
[20:44]
mercutiooh right [20:44]
m0unds_god, this is horrible [20:44]
mercutioyeah i wondered if i'd missed something
just test from home
don't try weathering that kind of loss
[20:44]
m0unds_home's fine regardless [20:45]
mercutioyou'll go crazy
but testing to kvr10 etc
[20:45]
m0unds_yeah [20:45]
mercutioyou can't test from arp [20:45]
m0unds_it's fine [20:45]
mercutiobut are you on kvr10? [20:45]
m0unds_home -> arp is fine
no
i tested to 26
[20:45]
mercutiowhich kvr are you on? [20:45]
m0unds_which is where i am
or 27
i tested both
hah
[20:45]
mercutioahh [20:45]
m0unds_a [20:45]
mercutiomaybe you shoudl try rebooting? [20:45]
m0unds_i don't think it's my vm [20:45]
mercutioin case your vm in a state
then wyh's it fine to kvr26?
[20:45]
m0unds_i can reach the vm fine from home, no packet loss [20:45]
mercutiooh [20:46]
m0unds_it's only on the return path [20:46]
mercutiotry remote desktop?
err vnc
oh it's fine from home

m0unds_only outlier is work is via ntt

work is screwed up
and other vm i tried is via ntt and is screwed up
but yours was fine

mercutiowell ntt definitely do have load balancing of a kind [20:47]
acf_hmm... really high latencies to kvr27 [20:47]
mercutioae is aggregated ethernet [20:47]
acf_and some loss [20:47]
mercutiowhich means that they're using a bundle of more than one ethernet interface [20:47]
acf_2. kvr27.arpnetworks.com 5.3% 19 36.2 20.2 0.1 60.6 24.1 [20:47]
m0unds_i'm fine to the host you linked mercutio - arp.meh.net.nz [20:47]
mercutiowow i have really high pings to kvr27 too [20:47]
m0unds_wait
8% now
hahaha
[20:47]
mercutioit's fine tothe hop immediately before
and it's fine to kvr26
[20:48]
m0unds_yeah, who knows [20:48]
mercutioacf: are you on kvr27 or were you just trying randon numbers? [20:48]
acf_mounds_ mentioned kvr27 earlier so I mtr'd it [20:49]
m0unds_i mentioned 26 and 27 - wasn't sure which one i'm on [20:49]
mercutiooh
i thought you said 26
damn i erally aren't reading properly
oh i see you said 26 iirc :)
[20:49]
m0unds_i'm on 27 [20:49]
mercutioi assume you're on kvr27 then [20:49]
m0unds_yeah [20:49]
mercutioand kvr27 is having issues
cool.
[20:49]
m0unds_i just confirmed it - had to drop my tunnel to get to the site [20:50]
mercutiowell maybe up_the_irons is around? [20:50]
m0unds_tunneled to home, but that's trying to reach arp via v6
which is hosed
[20:50]
mercutioand can check it out [20:50]
m0unds_hahaha [20:50]
mercutiohe was aronud earlier sometime i think
3 and a half hours ago
[20:50]
m0unds_on an utterly unrelated note, i upgraded my kvm box at home to 14.04
my avg cpu load w/the same guests dropped like mad
[20:51]
mercutiohave you tried spice? [20:51]
m0unds_not yet
i remembered you mentioning it
[20:51]
mercutioi tried spice onlocal network
i was blown away
[20:51]
m0unds_i was originally running a win2k8 vm by itself, and saw ~1.1 load avg with other svcs [20:51]
mercutioway faster than windows remote desktop
impressed me :)
and windows remote desktop is way faste than vnc
[20:51]
m0unds_same svcs, with asterisk in a new vm + the same win2k8 one and my load avg is ~.2 or lower
not sure what changed, but it's much more responsive in the guests
[20:52]
mercutioi do have infiniband though
so low latency / high bandwidth
[20:52]
m0unds_mine's just raid 10 (2x2) old-ish sas disks [20:52]
mercutioactually that reminds me i have more ram to stick on my server so i can stick kvm on it again
i have zfs on 3 ssds
[20:52]
m0unds_time to head home from work, bbiab [20:53]
mercutiofwiw amazon are pretty cheap for ssds
and ssd's use way less power than sas hard-disks

m0unds_havent ever had an issue with kvm or xen based vms on good hosts
ssds would be great, but i already have the sas disks and spares
if i build a new virt box, i'll definitely use ssds though

looks like it started at around 20:25 and stopped at around 22:30ish
http://i.imgur.com/d59oHN2.png
ordinarily, very, very stable
haha
[21:49]
mercutiowell it's good if you dont' need lots of storage
sas don't give you lots of storage anyway though
[21:52]
m0undsmy sas disks are only 250gb
my windows vm has a 60GB disk img and my asterisk box has 30gb
that's it
[21:52]
