up_the_irons: brycec: it probably wouldn't do a whole lot more, if anything; just look nicer on mobile and have navigation / look / feel be more inline with a mobile device.

brycec: TIL there's an AWS app
jpalmer: If I might ask... What sorts of things are you using the apps for?
eg checking status, provisioning new instances, etc
jpalmer: brycec: one of my clients doesn't want to use amazons autoscaling, because they want to have an idea of what they ar going to pay every month. So, I get alerts when things fall out of preferred thresholds.. and then depending on the situation, I'll spinup more instances, or scale them back. things like that.
brycec: Interesting
Doesn't exactly translate to ARP :P But I see the utility in it.
jpalmer: yeah, thats why I said it kinda depends on the functionality offered by the app
mus1cb0x: what is a VPS label in arp parlance?
i read through the KB but there wasn't an article defining it
brycec: What is a VPS label in English?
mus1cb0x: hey, don't answer if you don't want to, but please don't be a dick
this is a channel for paying customers, and it doesn't help arp if it's filled with griefers
brycec: mus1cb0x: Sorry, didn't mean to come off that way. I'm legit asking...
I'm not familiar with "VPS label" as a term used by any other provider
mus1cb0x: neither am i
brycec: mus1cb0x: Are you asking about ARP's "Custom Service Label"?
mus1cb0x: do you use the dedicated server service?
brycec: I do not, just a VPS customer.
mus1cb0x: well i had the VPS dns name changed, and apparently that requires a change to the vps and a reboot also?
from the support ticket: "I've changed your DNS record to ..." "In order to change your VPS label, I need to shut it down and change
its setting.
"
i'm wondering if VPS label == hostname?
brycec: I couldn't say... Changing the DNS name is uncommon. Customers tend to keep their own DNS.
mus1cb0x: Oh so it's something support@ said...
mus1cb0x: well apparently it's some dns entry that's made for each and every VPS
yep

m0unds: yeah
up_the_irons: it shows EU for me :)
m0unds: yeah, that's what showed when i pulled it up
took a moment to figure out where the a/c were, haha
jpalmer: up_the_irons: thats the default. you have to zoom in to where my reciever is. (florida)
m0unds: what's your data source?
jpalmer: I'm feeding the live transponder data into flightradar24.com
m0unds: I'm lterally reading the plane transponders as they get within range.
literally*
up_the_irons: jpalmer: ok
m0unds: using what, though? i figured it was a radio or something
jpalmer: oh, yea. one of the little $10 USB TV recievers
m0unds: haha, awesome
cool project
http://hackaday.com/2013/05/23/listening-to-aircraft-transponders-with-a-raspberry-pi/ akin to this?
jpalmer: yeah, I have $40 involved. and, I've hand built an antenna. I just need to get outside and mount it this weekend. right now, the antenna is on my desk. so the range kinda.. sucks
yep, they are using the same software I did.
when I get the homeade antenna up, I'm hoping to pull in planes within a 150-200 mile radius.
that then gets fed into flightradar24.com, which offers a little more info (they take the flight info from the transponder, and associate it to the FAA flight info, allowing you to see takeoff/landing times and locations, and such.
m0unds: huh.
jpalmer: m0unds: the page I used: http://www.satsignal.eu/raspberry-pi/dump1090.html
m0unds: wish my airspace was more active
mhoran: I should set up one of those. In NYC, under JFK and LGA airspace.
(I'm also a pilot.)
m0unds: mhoran: what do you fly?
mhoran: m0unds: I'm checked out in the club's Diamond DA-20. A friend and I are in the process of buying a Diamond DA-40 (N269RB).
m0unds: neat aircraft
mhoran: They are. I didn't realize how neat when I started training. Spent some time flying a C172 while I was in CA last year and it was nice to see more of what's out there to compare.
Do you fly?
m0unds: i wish - just do a lot of watching. i live near a public airport (KAEG)
mhoran: Cool, cool. It's a lot of fun. Especially around here. Love flying up the Hudson River Corridor. My family is in New Hampshire and friends back in Boston so it's nice to be able to zip up here.

mhoran: Woah that's fancy.
m0unds: neat. i'd love to get into flying, but it's something that'll have to wait a bit - too many things to do :)
mhoran: Yeah. It's a huge time sink. And I just want to fly more and more now that I've got my certificate. You get rusty so quick if you don't get up there. Plus, on a beautiful day, the sky is just beckoning you.
RandalSchwartz: 270 hours PP-ASEL-IA, high performance and retract
mhoran: Neat!
RandalSchwartz: but I haven't flown since 1993. :( Except in X-plane
mhoran: I plan to start on instrument once we get our plane. It's too impractical at the current place we're flying out of, a two hour drive from my house. And I don't own a car.
RandalSchwartz: "our plane"? You fly 100 hours a year or more?
because otherwise, a plane is like boat. two happiest days of a plane owner's life.... day he buys it, and day he sells it. :)
mhoran: Hah, yup. We've been told that many times. :)
We've managed 90 hours in the last year, under less than optimal conditions (the two hour commute). Having a plane closer should make logging hours even easier. And we both want to do training for instrument, so we have to log that time.
We'll see. Both of us have family ~4 hours outside the city we want to visit often, and the rental situation in NYC sucks.
The FBO we were renting from originally shut down due to an accident last year. The major airports only focus on ATP training and the next closest option is the place we're renting from. Not accessible via public transit.
m0unds: RandalSchwartz: x-plane is good stuff.
jpalmer: mhoran: if you want to set one of these up, I'm all about offering help. including the homeade antenna.
mhoran: I've been meaning to get a setup for that. It finally runs on my laptop (someone wrote a LD_PRELOAD hack that fixes issues with Intel and Msa.)
RandalSchwartz: indeed. Austin is an amazing coder
mhoran: jpalmer: Sweet!
m0unds: some of his adventure blog posts are pretty fun
jpalmer: mhoran: with the wrong antenna (a little 4" magent mount tuned for TV reception) and indoors.. I get about 60 miles or so. when I get my co-co about 40' in the air outside.. I'm hoping for closer to 200 miles.
mhoran: That's awesome!
Yeah, where I am, I'm sure there'd be some amazing traffic. Even with a crappy antenna.
I'm underneath the flight path for LGA runway 04.
jpalmer: mhoran: until you build one though, flightradar24 is free. and if you are near JFK.. I'm sure someone is already doing it and feeding data to the site.
the local airport is very small. but I can see planes down to about 200'altitude now. when it's outside, I'm hoping to pick them up on the ground.
mhoran: Very cool.
jpalmer: the frequency is fairly line of site, though. so.. not sure.
mhoran: if you are going in on a plane though.. make sure to install an ADS-B transponder, so I can keep tabs on ya!
mhoran: Heh. It's so expensive. Not going to pay for that yet. :)
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N208DB/history/20140420/2154Z/KGON/N14 -- I was surprised to see I got tracked the other day, when I transited the NY class bravo airspace! Usually they only half-ass getting you into hte system, but it was pretty busy and they needed to vector me out of the way a couple times.
RandalSchwartz: line of site, or line of sight?
heh... KGON is the local rocker station :)
m0unds: RandalSchwartz: that's exactly what i thought of - my buddy works for a WISP in portland and they had some gear colo'd up at the transmitter for KGON
RandalSchwartz: indeed
well - not sure the format now
but they practically invented the phrase "KGON... rocks"
even to the point where people would put KGON stickers on street signs that mentioned "rocks" :)
m0unds: haha
RandalSchwartz: practically invented isn't the right phrase... more like "pounded it into our heads"... :)
mus1cb0x: what's kgon?
m0unds: kgon is an airport or a radio station in oregon
RandalSchwartz: or both!

maybe it was my older scanner. I don't recall now.

mus1cb0x: after i've installed fbsd, is it possible to then remove the iso from the virtual cdrom to speed up boot time/security?
CaZe: You can set the BIOS to not look at the cdrom.
mus1cb0x: no kidding? on a vps? that's cool
i just rebooted the vps and it shows 1 HD and 2 dvd roms
f12 for boot menu. but no option to enter bios
any tip on that caze?
CaZe: Actually, I haven't tried in awhile. Are you on VNC?
I'm pretty sure it's there, though.
Unfortunately, I can't reboot my VPS right now to check.
Go to the CMOS setup menu or something.
mus1cb0x: yea
is there a support article on how to access the bios of a vps?
CaZe: It's exactly the same as on any PC.
mus1cb0x: there's no listed key sequence to enter it
what is it?
i'll try it
CaZe: I don't remember. :/
It usually tells you.
"F11 for setup" or something.
mus1cb0x: yea doesn't seem to be happening
hm
CaZe: Wait, it's trying to boot your cdrom first?
mus1cb0x: no, but it gives the option
ideally i'd have no discs in the virtual ddrives
CaZe: Asking you to hit F12?
mus1cb0x: it gives the option
CaZe: Does it timeout?
mus1cb0x: it auto boots to disk just fine, i'd just prefer to remove the iso from the virtual drives
yea
