is virtio supported out-of-the-box in freebsd 10? wondering if i should go all virtio when i make v10 templates up_the_irons: i believe so, might want to test it out though k my smallest host, "mercury", will get an upgrade to Precise (Ubuntu 12.04) this Wednesday night notice to be sent out soon (not sure if anyone here is on it) does that correspond to a kvr# or does it predate kvr# ? which kvr is it? ;-) up_the_irons: virtio drivers in vm is still so-so performance wise (not half as bad as 9 though) at least according to my testing jbergstroem: is it still better than the current VM disk IO drivers? staticsafe: not really. i kind of trust them more as well network drivers works great though toddf: staticsafe : technically, it is kvr01, but it was named before i made the "kvr" prefix naming system :) ah up_the_irons: What does "kvr" stand for/mean anyways? brycec: I'm guessing here, 'Kernel Virtual aRpnetworks' brycec: KVM Virtual Machine Kvm ViRtual machine ^ ^ ^ :) lol virtio was supported as of 9.2 in freebsd i haven't had any issues with it, and disk latency and stuff is lower than the default virtual ide driver or whatever it uses without virtio i imagine that other tenants using virtual io will improve performance too will improve node performance in general yeah it's really hard to benchmark such things though i'd like to see the vnc speed up :/ VNC is slow everywhere that's the main thing i actually find slow heh it's slow on my KVM host at home on my local network via my local network it's just universally slow as balls if it could just echo characters in a more timely fashion it'd be a nice start :) damn so the update may nnt help yea - i only run a pair of vms on my box, and the load is less than 2.00 on a dual quad core box do you find keys echo slow? yep as well as full screen refreshes full screen refreshes i can understand slihgtly more yeah i found that using screen sharing or whatever the quasi-vnc client in osx is is pretty bearable but it's laggy enough to not have good feedback loop from here at least yeah. i only use vnc if i screw something up though i was running chrome over remote X the other day it's quite usable or if i need to interact with a box at boot err on lan except when resizing yeah same m0unds ... but when i screw something up i'm easier irritated lol i screewed up the openbsd upgrade yeah, i remember you had a hard time w/that sounded...fun? heh haha that's oen word for it not the right word, necessarily lol oh well it's only that update that is meant to be a pita there's a new non vnc consoel thingy too i think it was called spice? oh spice is in precise yeah spice is in precise, but i never tested it having a portal knob to twiddle disk type would be awesomeness, just sayin; I might be more inclined to try virtio nic or disk if I knew _I_ could revert in the timing of a shutdown/powerup Spice is pretty effing smooth. spice is the rolls royce of vm remote connectivity consider 1) secure! can do password and even ssl ca keying etc 2) permits `sharing' audio/virtual usb disk/virtual usb cd/virtual usb floppy .. its awesomeness if you have a kvm capable system throw the latest proxmox.com on it and play; ignore the web ui notice there is no commercial licence and it works fine .. in unix 'remote-viewer foo. Exactly what we do brycec: do you have a .mailcap and .mime.types recipie? I have failed to create a working one .. Also fun: the cluster nodes will forward the spice (or vnc, etc) connection amongst each other. (I login to host A, get a spice connection for a VM running on host B, and the connection magically works via host A) toddf: Nope. Never ever messed with those. brycec: how do you connect to spice? directly via tcp or via some inetd alike running 'qm spice-server 100' or alike ? I'm talkin by hitting the 'spice console' button in the web ui toddf: How does Proxmox do it? Internally, can't quite recall. But I click the SPICE button and it downloads "foo", then I run "remote-viewer foo" but anyway, semantics. sometime in the next two years I'll be surprised if arpnetworks doesn't have a spice remote viewing option. I'm sure those of us who have played with similar would be glad to work out any logistical and/or cmd line examples for up_the_irons if it would help ;-) (And foo has certificate and host details_) yes, indeedy it does i've never actually tried spice but if it works better than vnc i'd be keen to try it mercutio: better is subjective, i honestly can't tell difference between visual display; its the fact that it is secure to the kvm process that interests me most extra bells and whistles are nice, but not my personal selling point ;-) toddf: portal knob to twiddle disk / nic arch. is something i'd like to work on soon up_the_irons: awesome ;-) :) I've desires to use virtio nic, but os implementation issues can crop up, and ability to revert to intel nic and test at will virtio would be invaluable for me. I've not inundated you with support requests due to lack of desire to do so ..and coordinate testing on my end etc .. ;-) your 'schedule' cuts out extra work in and of itself (and that is a good thing *grin*) i think more of your suggestions have become features than of anyone else ;) lucky me or good suggestions. hopefully the latter. ;-) though I do, for the most part, have a single os for desktop and server deployment (OpenBSD) I do have a diverse set of experience using and maintaining various VM environments. when I see a good thing not present here yet, I can't help but mention it. I guess you and others agree its a must have at some point ;-)
