wouldn't touch it :)
well actually i think it's the commercial one that's bad
i think normal openvz doesn't limit

brycec: Yeah, OpenVZ has its place... eg I run some smallish internal services from OpenVZ. No reason to have a full VM. It's basically a jail that's much simpler to configure.
But for a "VPS" nooooo I avoid that shit like the plague
m0unds: haha
well run virtuozzo stuff isn't too bad
just see way too many awful hosts using openvz and not knowing wtf they're doing
brycec: "Get rich quick"
m0unds: yeah
high tenant density, low investment
hope people don't run away too fast
hit that magic $2/mo pricepoint for 512 or 1024MB and rake in the bux
brycec: I think that more often than not, you have to worry about the owners running before the customers in those "get rich quick run openvz" scenarioos
m0unds: http://www.shodanhq.com/ ever seen this?
brycec: maybe
up_the_irons: brycec: owners running, lol. it's true.
phlux: it is so frustrating watching my wife play video games :|
she's playing "South Park: The Stick of Truth"
brycec: nice
Luckily for #arpnetworks, up_the_irons is too fat to run *rimshot*
(j/k)
phlux: you gonna take that, up_the_irons?
up_the_irons: wut
phlux: what would Iron Maiden do?
brycec: Rock out?
phlux: UP THE IRONS
bbl
up_the_irons: i'm not fat ;)
brycec: I didn't really think so. I believe I've seen some photos of you on your Flickr :p
m0unds: brycec is creepin
up_the_irons: :)
m0unds: http://1drv.ms/1gfoZJU
highlight of my day
brycec: heh
mercutio: up_the_irons: any update on the level3 connection? (just out of curiosity)
up_the_irons: i'm getting the LOA for x-conn soon

mnathani: up_the_irons: how do trit, he.net, nlayer and other transit providers bill you? Based on bandwidth? Port Speed or 95th percentile?
up_the_irons: 95th
mnathani: so bringing in a new transit like level3 who will distribute your overall load could possibly reduce the bills from the other transits?
up_the_irons: no because there are minimums
i should say it is 95% billing _with_ a commitment; you can't commit to 0 Mbps
so if traffic is under your commit, you still pay the full commitment price
i have to commit to 100 Mbps on all circuits to get GigE ports
that traffic in total is way more than I need
but what can ya do...
mnathani: right..
whats the cost per mbit like?
nvm .. you probably can't disclose specific figures
mercutio: up_the_irons: you can buy off someone who aggregates? :)
but yeah not much you can do.
mnathani: it's probably in the 0.50 to $3.00 range
per megabit
for he.net vs level3
actually i have a feeling level3 is cheaper than it used to be.
but then there are port fees on top of that
so really it's best to use more bandwidth
and have more customers
up_the_irons: are you paying for in+out 95th percentile or the maximum of the two?
up_the_irons: i'm not even sure
mercutio: heh
up_the_irons: i never go above the min
mercutio: curious
even with that ntp exploit?
up_the_irons: i didn't let the ntp exploit last long enough
mercutio: oh yeh
it seemed like ages
but it was like a day or two wasn't it?
up_the_irons: ppl on twitter complain that i blocked all ntp, well fuck 'em, i tell 'em to pay my bandwidth bill and then i'll leave it open ;)
mercutio: interesting
up_the_irons: well, it started slow
mercutio: i wouldn't think most people would notice
up_the_irons: it was like a ramp
they did
ppl get sensitive like that
;)
mercutio: yeh
i'd complain if you block icmp :/
up_the_irons: lol
btw, can't buy off someone who aggregates cuz the networks discourage that
(they want *you* as the customer)
bbl
mercutio: ahh ok
-: up_the_irons wanders off
mercutio: they can make more money that way :/
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1350362
mnathani: that thread suggests normal pricing is $10/megabit
i imagine most people don't pay normal pricing though
the jist looks like 1 gig on 10 gigabit is ~ $3.5usd/megabit
+ tax
and 100 megabit is much more
and to get sharp pricing you're meant to buy more than a gigabit commit
m0unds: up_the_irons: people complained about ntp filtering? geez.

BryceBot: <mercutio> the gist looks like 1 gig on 10 gigabit is ~ $3.5usd/megabit
m0unds: ...err?
oh
hahah
i don't know why that confused me
mercutio: 1 gig commit
is that what confused?
i really thought it wsa cheaper than that
m0unds: no, the sed replace of j w/g
just didn't notice what was replaced, guess my brain did it automatically
mercutio: oh i see
i don't type that word often :/
wikitionary lists it an as alternative spelling :/
so why's it pronounced jist and spelt gist. the english langugae confuses
hmm, i suppose it's similar to git, where some people say ghit, and some people say jit
for the revision control, not for an idiot
m0unds: hahaha
brycec: mercutio: as a *rare* alt spelling :P
mercutio: haha
brycec: mercutio: 'g' as in 'giuseppe' so there :P
mercutio: say what
brycec: Italian has soft-g too
gist, giuseppe, etc
m0unds: yo mammy
mercutio: oh
apparently git comes from beget
i find lots of computer things seem to encourage people to pronounce alternatively
-: brycec still says gif with a hard-g
mercutio: so do i
is that not normal?
i usually prounce tiff "t i f f" as well
brycec: A resistance to change? Yes, totally normal :P
mercutio: err prononunce
brycec: mercutio: you spell it out?
mercutio: yeah
if speaking verbally yes
brycec: To differentiate from the noun?
mercutio: partially because not everyone knows what it is
m0unds: haha
mercutio: and the spelling isn't obvious
and probably partially because it reminds me of iff
which i also spelt out
m0unds: UPS (as in power) - phoneticize or spell out as an acronym?
brycec: I instinctively spelled out i.f.f.
mercutio: spell out every time
brycec: spelled out
Same with the delivery service...
m0unds: thank you
hahahah
yeah
mercutio: as a non american i find it confusing that there is UPS and USPS
m0unds: it makes me cringe a little when people say UPPZ
mercutio: and that UPS is 4x as expensive
m0unds: haha, it's not htough
though
i trust UPS or Fedex more than USPS for packages
brycec: mercutio: as an american, it's still confusing.
mercutio: to here, from america i'd rather go with fedex or dhl
but usps is better value
brycec: "value"
I don't think I'd agree with that statement.
mercutio: well usps has better tracking for some reason
whatever the internet seems tos ays
seems to say
m0unds: i use fedex unless i get a prepaid label for UPS or USPS
mercutio: it integrates with normal postal tracking here, ...
so can use local tracking, or the remote tracking to find more detail of where it is in US
brycec: "normal postal tracking" as in, tracking is normal?
mercutio: whereas dhl and fedex have icky pages
umm nz post
which is the normal postal carrier here
although, for some reason they hand registered mail to couriers to deliver.
brycec: Trying to understand if you mean that your postal carrier offers tracking normally/default, or if you mean that it's integrated into their own tracking (web form, or whatever)
mercutio: it's integrated to their own tracking
well .. all country code stuff of XXNNNNNNNNNNXX is
m0unds: yea, i've seen that w/international parcels that use USPS for local delivery
i can see all the tracking stuff til delivery like it's native, but it's coming in from whatever partner service/courier is being used
mercutio: yeh they must have interconnects
brycec: General consensus, at least among the people I read and converse, is that US Postal is basically dead, and practically worthless.
staticsafe: USPS transfers to Canada Post when delivering to Canadian destinations
mercutio: it may be for local delivery
but for international from US it seems to work well.
m0unds: https://tools.usps.com/go/TrackConfirmAction.action?tLabels=9405510200986217502529
-: staticsafe prefers UPS/Fedex
brycec does too
m0unds: 100% of that tracking showed up after the package was actually delivered
mercutio: well i'd prefer fedex
probably
m0unds: it didn't show up at all til i had a box at my door
mercutio: but it costs way more :/
brycec: Also, shipping parcels UPS/FedEx is a lot simpler
m0unds: yeah. i have a fedex acct. i sign in, fill in the address, print my label and stick it on the box
staticsafe: https://tools.usps.com/go/TrackConfirmAction.action?tLabels=LN049979968US
brycec: lol m0unds been there
m0unds: ditto.
m0unds: staticsafe: tycho?
staticsafe: yea
mercutio: brycec: well i wasn't really thinking of how hard it is to send
brycec: Well, company has the account...
m0unds: that's what mine was too, lol
staticsafe: i picked up the cd today from the mailbox
m0unds: right on
mercutio: we have a few couriers here, and a local auction site like ebay
and one of the couriers is extra bad, and most people use them...
cos they're cheap
m0unds: hahaha
brycec: Sounds like US Postal here :P
Actually, there are worse.
mercutio: heh
brycec: OnTrac is the best of the crap third-party couriers
mercutio: isn't usps mostly just slow?
m0unds: depends on the class of svc
mercutio: first class international
and priority mail
brycec: And the biggest bureacratic pile of... Yeah.
And confusing as fuck.
mercutio: which seem to be the same thing
m0unds: see, i rarely ship internationally
but priority mail is essentially guaranteed to arrive in 3 days
mercutio: err priority mail international i mean
brycec: FedEx Ground, Express Saver, 2-day, overnight. SO SIMPLE.
mercutio: oh hmm
m0unds: hahahaha, yup
mercutio: so it should be sent from the US within 3 days?
i've seen it take longer than taht!
m0unds: i'm talking domestically
within the us
mercutio: 10 days from PA to NY
m0unds: oddly enough, fedex ground from NM -> NC is ~3-4 days and is the same price or cheaper than priority mail
brycec: haha
mercutio: oh hangon 5 days
then 5 days to new zelaand
i read wrong line
m0unds: paddleboat
mercutio: hmm, the 5th day is a sunday
so at least it seems they do stuff on sundays
m0unds: ups is cheaper domestically?
oh fed ex
m0unds: yea, and it just drafts from my credit card
so when i go to work, i just swing by fedex office and drop it off, no lines or anything
it's nice
mercutio: what i want to see is international prices for freight matching china :/
-: brycec has daily FedEx pickup
mercutio: i still don't understand how they can sell items for $1 USD including delivery
when seding a small thing domestically costs that here
let alone having anything in it, and ebay fees
m0unds: we do at work, but i can't ship personal stuff from our dock here
