maybe openvpn stole your default route?
you could add a specific route to your ip if you're playing with things and you think it might disrupt normal connectivity
got a 9 cell battery for my MSI Wind; it has more capacity than my old T61 battery!

the little notebook i take to work with me w/network utils and stuff on it has one of those 9-cell batteries (it's similar to an msi wind - gateway lt3103u)
lasts a pretty long time

When I used to do field work, I would bring my Chromebook everywhere. Battery lasts forever (2 years and I still get ~6hrs), built-in free 3G, thin and lightweight. Only drawback was a lack of built-in Ethernet. (And at the time, ChromeOS VPN support was shoddy)

I don't believe it's offered on any current model.
Sadly my 2yrs of free service is up.
It's still nice to know that, given a desperate or dire situation, I can switch it on, pay Verizon $10 and have a day's access.
Or I can just tether through my phone's unlimited LTE
