toddfup_the_irons: mbsync user here ..
up_the_irons: the one complaint I have is that it doesn't do IPv6, I have a diff, but its not for the current version
up_the_irons: the pro side of mbsync is much less cpu
[08:02]
mike-burnsI've been reading about mbsync today. Might give it a try.
The fact that offlineimap works fine means I don't have much reason to switch ... but mbsync does seem better.
[08:03]
toddfmnathani: the con side is .. if you have an unexpected shutdown (panic, battery loss, etc) sometimes the fs state is not consistent wrt the imap db it creates, so I just remove the whole folder
also, mbsync is a one shot 'sync stuff' command, and then it exits. I've created a 'staggerimap' script that syncs inbox and stuff I want to check frequently .. every 30s .. then every hour it does everything ..

i practically stopped using offlineimap on certain folders b/c it was so slow
mbsync is orders of magnitude faster, very happy
[12:33]
brycecOut of curiosity... up_the_irons are you pulling from your own mail server, or Gmail? [12:34]

phluxI wonder how difficult it would be to just replace the wifi card in this Thinkpad.. [14:04]
***millere is now known as exm [14:04]
brycecThinkpads are fairly repairable, just a matter of swapping the card. [14:05]
m0undsphlux: if it's just one of those little minicard ones, not too hard [14:05]
phluxI have no idea what's inside of this thing
I don't even know what model it is
I just know it's a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge that I got for cheap
[14:05]
brycecNice. I too have an Thinkpad Edge of some sort [14:06]
phluxGot this one on a woot sale
Couldn't pass it up
[14:07]
brycecOh mine was a Thinkpad X130e, from 1SaleADay [14:07]
phluxI know I have an AMD Turion II..
I wonder if that can narrow it down?
[14:08]
brycecIt probably can, yes [14:08]
phluxhttp://www.cnet.com/laptops/lenovo-thinkpad-edge-15/4505-3121_7-35127154.html
that looks like it
except I have 8GB of RAM
and I don't remember if I did that myself or not..
[14:09]
brycecSo based on list of networking choices, it's very likely a minipcie slot.
Look underneath for a rectangular cover with a screw. One will likely be RAM, another probably the wireless. No guarantees, but this is how Thinkpads usually are built.
[14:09]
phluxAh..they're underneath, eh? [14:11]
brycecAs opposed to inside? Yes! [14:11]

phluxOk, that was dumb.
It's right underneath my trackpad
Which is a pain in the ass to get to. I had to remove my CD drive -_-
at least I know what it is now, though
mini pcie is correct
It's got two little antennas connected to it as well
so, should go intel?
even though this is an AMD chipset?
[14:47]
m0undsyeah
intel wlan stuff is good
[14:51]
brycecAnd has nothing to do with AMD chipset/cpu [14:51]
m0undsthat too [14:51]

phluxLooks like that'd be covered by iwlwifi [14:55]
brycecOh that's cool, simultaneous analog and IP video. [14:55]
phluxWhat about an atheros card? [14:55]
brycecAlsogood.
Honestly, I don't know of any "not good" cards... there's just "unsupported," "supported", and "well supported"
[14:56]
m0undsyea
our price is 898 for these
[14:57]
phluxwell
then it has to be this shitty network extender then
[14:57]
brycecm0unds: shit, that's a discount [14:58]
phlux-then [14:58]
m0undsyup [14:58]
mercutioyou can get cards that mini-pcie
err that take mini pci-e so you can plug antennas in
[14:58]
brycec"mini-pcie" isn't a verb [14:58]
mercutioyeh words coming out wrong
i haven't tried wireless ac yet
but even my old intel wiresless isn't that bad
4965AGN or something
and those are real cheap on ebay, .. and probably better than those realtek
oh he was looking for straight mini pci-e anyway
phlux: hp lock laptops for what cards they can take, i dunno if lennovo do anything as annoying
[14:59]
brycecI kickstarted the Almond+, looking forward to trying out AC. So far, only my N5 has an ac adapter.
I've only ever heard of HP doing the lock-in game these days.
[15:03]
mercutiook
well my laptop is locked, but it has intel wireless already
only problem is that it doesn't do as high speeds on 2.4 ghz
but in real world usage it tends to do ok at distance, and at short range, but i haven't really tried in between
i dunno how reliable 2.4/5 ghz switchover is
it's single stream in 2.4 though :(
but ime single stream tends to be more reliable anyway
[15:04]
m0undsyea, unlicensed wireless is getting ridiculous in terms of interference
so the fewer streams, the more reliable your link will likely be
[15:09]
mercutioyeah i don't think 40 mhz 2.4 ghz should exist
apparently in the US they have less channels to play with, so it's probably even worse.
but some routers have been forcing 40 mhz without backing down to 20 mhz when adjacent channels are used making the situation worse.
[15:10]
m0undsyea. lots of isps have done a really poor job of educating customers about the featuresets of the cpes they provide. some people will buy another router and will run it in tandem with the isp-provided one [15:13]
brycecNOISE! [15:13]
m0undsmy neighborhood is just full of generic ISP networks, then a bunch of consumerjunk router ssids
myqwest09123488, etc

m0undsoh, sorry

hahahah

haha
[15:17]
brycecProbably an HP thinger [15:17]
m0undsbarely even hanging on - -97dBm
here's a fun one - 40MHz 2.4GHz primary, 40MHz 2.4GHz guest network
[15:18]
brycecCan you have a guest network on the same radio with different characteristics? I don't think so. [15:20]
m0undserr, second is 5ghz
err, first is
i can barely see the 5GHz radio
probably my redneck neighbor
[15:20]
brycecNot uncommon, shorter wavelengths require more power to travel the same distance as a shroter wavelength [15:21]
m0undsm0unds does lots of wireless [15:21]
brycecbrycec does too, General class license [15:22]
m0undscool
ours is all unlicensed gear because it's mostly shorthaul to areas where we have no conduit for cable
proxim and solectek

hazardoushttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rai_stones [18:22]
BryceBotRai stones :: Rai, or stone money (Yapese: raay), are large, circular stone disks carved out of limestone formed from aragonite and calcite crystals. Rai stones were quarried on several of the Micronesian islands, mainly Palau, but briefly on Guam as well, and transported for use as money to the island of Yap. They have been used in trade by the Yapese as a form of currency. While the monetary system of Yap appears to use these giant... [18:22]
