oh - and I think I sorted out why my vps was crappy.  (1) too little free disk, and (2) some of my httpds had been hammered by bad crawlers, and were in weird states.  restarted apache... life is better.

they do occasionally have rdns
not along the path, but destination hosts have it occasionally
they probably do reverse for the same hosts internally so as to hide interfaces, locations, router vendors etc
