-: ant <- bad student
up_the_irons: what is the topic?
ant: synthesis and optimization of microelectronic systems
up_the_irons: nice
studieren Sie.. uhh.. Electrical Engineering?
ant: computer engineering
up_the_irons: nice
ant: btw. as you would adress me by my first name, it would be Du
up_the_irons: studierst du?
ant: (in german irc channels i've never seen anybody saying Sie)
up_the_irons: roger that
ant: up_the_irons: right
up_the_irons: ok cool
yeah that is the problem with a lot of text book stuff, and a lot of these little extra Android apps i have for German, they all tend to defer to the Sie version of things, being "safer" i guess
so i hear that, get used to it, and probably use it too much
ant: probably. saying du when Sie is apropriate is way ruder than the other way round
up_the_irons: right
When my Mom saw i was doing duolingo for German, she asks "Spreche Sie Deutsch?"... now.. given that she is my Mom and knows me on a first name basis, would it have been more appropriate for her to say "Sprichst du Deutsch?"
ant: yes. especially as she is a family member
up_the_irons: got it
i will correct her next time :)

jpalmer: up_the_irons: I need a refund. I dropped a packet yesterday, and it rolled under the cage. I can see it wedged in the floor tiles at the back corner, but I can't get to it. Can you either refund all my fees for last year, or find my packet and return it? thanks in advance, you're a gem.
:)
brycec: -.-
sarkis: hah
brycec: O.O
If it rolled under the cage, then it ended up in the aisle and it's halfway down the corridor to facebook's cage.
jpalmer: oh no. he'll never find it on facebook. I guess that means the refund is in order.
sarkis: if it rolled to facebooks cage he would have already had viagra ads by now
i kid i kid
jpalmer: this whole thing reminds me of one of the far-fetched "tech support hell" calls. "this one dude called, I tried to explain he was dropping packets, and he kept wanting me to find them, pick them up, and return them!"

jpalmer: mnathani: not sure I can answer that. but I do know, after my latest yum update (yesterday) I get a kernel panic on boot. I have to select the previous kernel to boot.
mnathani: if you figure out any hints though, PLEASE let me know.
mnathani: jpalmer: Here is what I know for sure: I am on kvr29, with a fresh network install of CentOS 6.5. I included the install paramter: transparent_hugepage=never (not sure if it was necessary though). This is my uname -a output: Linux HOSTNAME 2.6.32-431.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Fri Nov 22 03:15:09 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux. I would be curious to know which host your VM is on as well as what kernel
version gave you a panic on boot. yum update wants to upgrade me to version: 2.6.32-431.3.1.el6 of the kernel. Needless to say I am hesitant to update the kernel at this point.
