mnathani | brycec: Thanks, its not for me. Its for a relative of mine who can't stand the Gmail interface, and uses and ISP that outsources to Yahoo. They would be switching to a familiar interface without the providers domain. | [00:02] |
brycec | Ah makes sense. | [00:06] |
mnathani | I really dont get why people allow the ISP so much control over them when they use the providers domain, which is no longer available to them when they switch ISPs
especially when there are so many other free / low cost options out there Heck, you can get a single Exchange / Office365 mailbox for like $4/month | [00:15] |

Indeed there are quite a few email hosting providers out there... I think mnathani was looking for Yahoo to keep the interface as same as possible. I know I've worked with more than a few people who spook at the slightest change, new button, different icon, etc If the customer is just getting the messages by POP then they would never even know the difference :p | [11:12] |

brycec | If anyone is curious about smokeping... It's a chore to configure, and monitoring 118 hosts from 4 systems (so 4*118 RRD files) is 1.4GB.
But hey, now I have oodles of data when it comes to "hey up_the_irons, ipv6 is acting funky" (which, it is...) (all my v6 packet loss suddenly dropped to 0 after a brief v6 outage... I wonder if up_the_irons is busy toiling away) | [22:27] |
mercutio | brycec: you're not monitoring very frequently are you
smokeping can timeout on that many hosts. | [22:31] |
brycec | mercutio: smokeping's default 5minute interval, 1.5s timeout | [22:31] |
mercutio | right
i do every 30 seconds. but reduce the number of pings per interval oh some hosts are still on 60 seconds to me, i want to see when things are up/down at a more granular interval than 5 minutes | [22:31] |
brycec | hm? All hosts have the same interval settings... | [22:32] |
mercutio | otherwise it's hard to know if you were just lucky in between intervals, or miss a short problem etc
yeh you have to change smokeping settings and rejig your rrd files to go down i usually just set it down when installing and delete all the rrd files :/ | [22:32] |
brycec | I considered tweaking it, but haven't yet. I'll probably keep the Internet stuff @ 5 minutes, and increase ARP's granularity. | [22:33] |
mercutio | but i think there's a way to convert | [22:33] |
brycec | Probably not worth the hassle, I only have atotal of a few hours' of data anyways | [22:34] |
mercutio | i also do curl though, less often than every minute
ahh ok 118 hosts? :) and you just did it.. | [22:34] |
brycec | I just did nothing...
i'm on my phone at this second... And yes 118 - see the Internet section :p gives a good overview of the rest of the Internet from my VPS | [22:34] |
mercutio | i haven't tried amalgamating data actually
i use use multiple smokeping instances another thing you can do is reduce ping size i find that it seems just as accurate being smaller. | [22:35] |
brycec | I'll consider it. Thanks. | [22:35] |
mercutio | packetsize = 32
i have that with fping | [22:36] |
brycec | brycec adds it to the list right after figuring out a way to add a "private" section | [22:36] |
mercutio | htaccess? | [22:36] |
brycec | A) nginx, B) htaccess doesn't match the ? portion of the URL
But since nginx, I may be able to have some fun | [22:37] |
mercutio | oh hmm
i'd just do two smokeping instances :/ | [22:37] |
brycec | I'm out, later | [22:37] |
mercutio | ok
you can have two config files for smokeping btw like it's set in smokeping.fcgi | [22:37] |
