hello. any staff here? Nyotron: up_the_irons is staff, as the topic mentions usually best to just mention him and ask your question and wait for an answer or submit a ticket if it's a support issue yeah thanks, i just wanted to know if any staff is available. anyway, up_the_irons: hello. please let me know when you're around. He is the staff. i got that. He's the only staff. his is a lonely job :) but at least he's employee #1 each month! hahaha my company is similar i'm employee # 5581 at one point I had 3 employees and seven nearly full time contractors so i have issues connecting to irc on one of my hosts - but not the other no idea why Why did you disconnect? not sure can't find any info on why it did 08:46 [FreeNode] ::: Irssi: Connection lost to irc.freenode.net You didn't ping out. 18:41:31 [freenode] -!- ERROR Closing Link: 2607:f2f8:a678::2 (Ping timeout: 246 seconds) You don't see anything like that? nope nothing i get packet loss pinging chat.freenode.net tho maybe try another server? i get it from the other host as well tho but never got disconnectes like, try a specific one vs irc.freenode or chat.freenode yep - tried weird. same result I get occasional huge spikes in lag over ipv6. qbit: which specific one did you ping? i can try from mine too I used to have my lag timeout at 30s, and my client would disconnect. lteo: 64.32.24.176 lags 174.143.119.91 does not confirmed 64.32.24.176 is dropping about 30% CaZe`: irssi? Yeah. 22 packets transmitted, 16 packets received, 27.3% packet loss did you just work around that by incrementing your timeout? for 64.32.24.176 i don't think it's a problem from arp. i also experience packet loss pinging it from elsehwere k CaZe`: what setting did you tune? server_connect_timeout? lag_max_before_disconnect lag_max_before_disconnect = 5min :/ When I had it set to 30s, my client would disconnect like a dozen times a day. think i would see lag disconnect msgs tho - vs just .. disconnect maybe not qbit: which OS? bumped to 10m anyway Yeah, you would. openbsd 5.4 must be an openbsd thing lteo: you on 5.4 or current? qbit: current k I'm on an old snapshot. my other machine which has always been on snaps was fine so it could be a 5.4 thing but other connections are fine i do drop out occasionally even on current well this is workign better do you ask irssi to prefer ipv6? What? no Oh, my connection was always fine on ipv4. It only lagged out on ipv6. does it ipv6 by default? err No. it's "/set resolve_prefer_ipv6" ah that was on welp - thanks for the input :) *disconnects* CaZe`: got a rancillio rocky Are you roasting your own beans yet? did a few times - pan roasted qbit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDi1X9i40nQ&feature=youtu.be YouTube Howto: "OE LIDO 2 Manual Coffee Grinder Prototype Demo" by orphanespresso (9m 29s), 4,558 views, 39 likes and 0 dislikes. Uploaded 2013-10-17T05:57:06.000Z. love those guys there is a guy that does a roasting class up here I got 20 lbs. of Liquid Amber from Sweet Maria's over the summer. nice I still have over ten pounds of it. But it took me at least 4 pounds of roasting just to figure out how to roast it. Actually, maybe more like 2 pounds. I roast in 1/4 pound batches. yeah, my first roast was bad - second was eh Well, even once you know what you're doing, there's stuff you have to learn when you change beans. yeah i like this gronder - fixes a lot of the things i didn't like about the pharos Like what? larger hopper, isn't weird to hold (iirc you made a mount for yours right?) i like the bigger grounds chamber too also this is more portable wut I don't have a mount, I just use the pad. The Rocky is more portable? nono - i mean i like the lido2 vs the pharos rocky is not portable. Oh, yeah, I might get it. sweet I'm always afraid to use my Pharos for anything besides espresso, because I don't want to lose the setting. http://www.home-barista.com/marketplace/orphan-espresso-lido-2-hand-grinder-t27131-130.html sweet marias is awesome i just roasted some yemen ismaili a few mins ago Yeah qbit, you should start roasting regularly. you only get better at it w/practice also helps to write down notes about time to 1st crack, 2nd crack, etc in a notebook or on a computer so you can easily reference what works and what doesn't i make notes in onenote on my phone, then move it over to excel later CaZe`: yeah, totally going to You don't have to spend much on a roaster. yeah, popcorn roaster style? I probably spend like $20 on my roaster, $20 on a thermometer, and $20 on a dimmer. That's what I started on, but I don't really like hot air poppers. They tend to roast too fast, leaving the beans acidic. which roaster do you have now? http://www.kotulas.com/deals/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10602&storeId=10152&productId=38518&langId=-1&srccode=cii_17588969&cpncode=33-243338443-2&Cm_ven=google_pla&Cm_cat=google&Cm_pla=Gifts%2b%2526%2bGadgets%2b%253e%2bGifts%2bfor%2bGals&Cm_ite=39674 I think anything of that general style will work. I got that at Target for $20. I just leave out the removable tray, and put the beans in. heh nice does 1/4lb at a time? You can get 1/4 lb. to go in one layer. Yeah, well, I weigh out 95 grams. It yields 77.5 grams, which I then portion out to 5 15.5 grams doses. I had to take it apart first though, and short out the thermostat. It will only allow it to reach 325 degrees or so. ah It has two holes on each side that allow the handles of the removeable tray to stick out -- I stick a thermometer in through one of the holes. http://www.sweetmarias.com/sweetmarias/coffee-roasters/roasting-supplies/cooper-550-degree-large-thermometer.html That one, in fact. http://www.harborfreight.com/router-speed-control-43060.html Then I plug it into that to control how much power it's getting. Oh, and I also got a pair of ove-gloves, because the thing gets really hot. haha The first thing I did was plug everything into a kill-a-watt, so I could see how what dial position on the router speed control corresponds to 50% power, 25% power, etc. And after that, it takes some practice to learn what dial position you should be at X minutes into the roast, and such. But I pretty much just shake it every 10 seconds or so. And then constantly towards the end. Mmm coffee. Right now, I turn it on full power for 1:30, which should get the temperature to 200 or so. Then I turn it to the lowest position on the dial, which is like 10% power. And it should coast up to 300° at the 5:00 mark. Then I turn it to 50% power, which should get it to first crack - 425° around 8:30 or so. nice Then I turn it down to 15% power, which should make first crack last until 10:30, then a slow and steady climb to second crack - 450° at 12:30. what's the altitude where you are? ANd I usually let it go at second crack for anywhere between 30s to a minute before dumping it onto a cooling tray. Sea level. Once second crack starts, I turn off all power. I just decide when to dump by how quickly the pops come. The thing about this is that there's virtually no airflow. Most roasters control the temperature by varying the amout of airflow -- even drum roasters. But, that means that with this, you can roast outside no matter how windy or cold it is. that's nice Anyway, I get better results with this than I did with a hot air popper. I guess capacity could be an issue. But I just drink a single shot a day, and I produce five shots in each batch, so it's not a big deal for me. I think an outdoor burner, and a covered cast iron pan could work pretty well, too. Your arm might get tired though, from all the shaking that has to be done. one a day holy I get jittery if I have more than say, two shots. Though I can have a 6 oz. cup of drip coffee. I just like the flavor of a good espresso. Sometimes if I screw up a roast, and it doesn't make good espresso, I'll brew it as drip. That usually only happens when I'm roasting a new bean. Sometimes I think the best part of an espresso shot is the aftertaste. I'll hold off on brushing my teeth for like 20 minutes after having a shot just so I can enjoy the aftertaste. lol nice Anyway, a George Foreman Grill, a panini press, an electric waffle iron, they're all pretty much the same. Though a waffle iron probably wouldn't work so well. not as cool as a brownie maker tho You want the irons to be in a shape that will let the beans move around when you shake. A waffle iron will trap beans in hot spots, as well as cool spots. And actually, I think a Foreman has a drip edge for letting fat drip out, which will allow beans to scape. escape Next time you're in Target or Walmart, just walk down the small cooking appliance aisle, and see what they have. http://www.hamiltonbeach.com/breakfast-breakfast-sandwich-maker-25475.html That might be okay. Not much surface area, though. i will probably get a popcorn machine from good will or something will be roastin inside almost always anyway You'll need a good hood. Whenever I roast inside, I setoff the smoke detector. Everytime. hm http://www.hamiltonbeach.com/waffle-makers-the-breakfast-master-skillet-and-waffle-maker-26046.html#accessories That could work really well. i have a really old waffle iron.. wonder if i could find concave plates for it I'm actually impressed with how long this thing has lasted. I've used it for two years. Over a hundred cycles taking it more than 100 degrees above the temperature it was designed to operate at. looks like this might work - if i flip the waffle pattern over it's nice and flat - has a bean sized lip area No sign of the plastic cracking, though some of the paint's peeled off and bubbled in places. heh How is it heated? toaster style top and bottom Electric? yes Give it a try, but keep in mind that beans expand a lot when you roast them. yeah wooo still have ~1/4 lb of beans http://www.amazon.com/Nordic-Ware-Italian-Frittata-Omelette/dp/B0055FSODU/ref=psdc33_t1_B0001HLWHW_B0055FSODU Something like that would last forever. Amazon: "Nordic Ware Italian Frittata and Omelette Pan" i think the acidity from air poppers really depends on the bean type and roast level because i did probably 15lbs in a toastess air popper, and while i think what i get out of the stovetop popper or gene is better balanced, the only times acidity really stood out was with beans that i would have expected to be more acidic How long was the roast? 85g or so, probably 4:30 - much shorter than doing it in the stovetop or gene usually around 4:30 to full city - temps are appx 450F with an 85g load I just dont care for it I guess. I used a popcorn popper for two years. it can impart a weird taste for sure i noticed that more with my first handful of batches though I did everything from varying the size of the vent holes to control air flow to altering the current that the heating elements receive. huh. which popper did you use, do you remember? I think I just prefer drum roast style. Nope. They were all Target specials. ah mine was like $16 on amazon something like that I don't think I can enjoy anything that roasts in less time than ten minutes. Closer to 15 is better. do you primarily roast for espresso? Yes. Also, popcorn poppers are hard to use outside when it's cold. yeah, for sure i had mine sitting on a work bench near a window huh, okay. i still have access to jtac downloads for some reaosn. reason ohai word up my sub lapsed in july, but i can still download software images weird. how's it going? nm, just browsing the steam store lots of discussion early this morning... So 7am is "early this morning" eh? why... yes very early for me :) i used to work late swing shift - i miss 0700 being early, haha It's certainly earlier than I'm up in the mornings, usually, but not by more than an hour i'm usually up by 0615 mst nowadays Hmm.
