m0undsi had a control computer on a closed surveillance system with 9 years of uptime - we shut it down permanently in march of 2013 [11:05]
anisfarhanaDue to? [11:07]
m0undsgutted the whole system, replaced it with new gear
analog w/digital recording -> network based ip video system
[11:08]
anisfarhanaBut few years ago i still see somebody use analog, instead of IP type cam.
Not sure why.
Performance issues?
[11:10]
brycecCost
An 8 cam analog system with 500GB drive can be found for $200 or so.
4 cheap IP cameras alone cost $200
[11:10]
anisfarhanaCabling cost? Or the cam itself? [11:11]
brycechardware [11:11]
anisfarhanaAh ok. Fair enough.
But its almost impossible to get very 'LIVE' video on IP cam right? Due to latency?
[11:11]
m0undsit's usually 30ms or less
and a lot of hybrid video systems run analog video into an encoder, which introduces 120-250ms at the low end
[11:12]
brycecGood network gear and setup = just as live. [11:13]
m0undswell, not the network so much as the encoder in the camera
also, the reason for casinos (which is the env i work with) sticking to analog is mostly because of cost, and the cost is significantly different vs gas station quality costco dvrs and cameras
[11:13]
brycecAh quite, good point.
heh
In my price range for cameras, the analog stuff still has better clarity and quality.
[11:14]
m0undsour analog equipment was all bosch security stuff - the cameras we removed are still in use by venetian properties
those were ~$680 for a fixed 15-50mm, $720 for a 2-8mm and $1300 for a PTZ
4CIF resolution, modular design
[11:14]
anisfarhanaYes imho nothing can beat Bosch for now. [11:15]

I still remember few years ago, when the government somewhere in middle east , requested from us "We want your cctv can focus and zoom for 3KM to be place at the airport"
We all see each others after he said that!
I guess only military spec cam able to do that?
3 KM

brycechahaha [15:54]
m0undsbefore we renovated this office, my monitors sat on top of $2000 worth of vcrs too [15:54]
brycecI've got a really nice VCR at home, and a broadcast-grade Betamax deck
($400 and $2500 respectively, when new)
[15:54]
m0undsthese are sanyo surveillance vcrs, used to be $500ea when new
hahaha
[15:55]
brycecHow long ago were they used? [15:55]
m0undsum, before i started working here - we only had the few remaining ones because we refused to give our security dispatch people access to digital recording [15:56]
brycechaha [15:56]
m0undsso these were probably taken out of service 4-6 yrs ago
they just had vcrs that recorded their display monitors for reviews or whatever
and we did the "actual" recording
[15:56]
brycecYeah I figured the VCRs doing actual recording were long, looong gone [15:56]
m0undsyeah, probably 8 years in our case
thereabouts
[15:57]
brycecNot as long ago as i'd expect. [15:57]
m0undsi think the first phase of digital was installed in 2003, final phase was 2006 [15:57]
anisfarhanaWe are just using the server at office instead of PVR.
PVR = cost
[15:57]
m0undsthen we ran that system up til 2011, began phasing in IP video, ran both systems in tandem for about 6 months, then cut over to ip video fully, then demo'd all old stuff
final demo completed in march or so - 30 racks of old dvrs
[15:57]
brycecVery cool m0unds [15:58]
m0unds30 racks for 896 cameras, we're now recording ~1300 streams in 4 racks, with one dedicated to our network core :) [15:58]
brycecAny sort of redundancy in case of network failure (etc)? [15:59]
m0undsyep, dual 6509 chassis', dual sup modules each [15:59]
brycecNice, an improvement over the analog [15:59]
m0unds4 network paths from each hub, two from minor hubs
yeah
[15:59]
brycecI assume power was always redundant [15:59]
m0undsactually no, old stuff, no redundant power
just redundant recording, redundant matrix cpus
nothing else
new stuff, redundant nics, redundant recording, redundant network paths, redundant power
[16:00]
brycecheh recording redundancy, but nothing on transport or the video hardware itself. Good to have known :p [16:00]
m0undsyeah, all old gear had a single point of failure that still exists here - single network interface to the camera
the matrix could switch analog video around failed cards and such though, which is kinda cool in a retro way
[16:01]
brycecAnd single power interface to the camera, I imagine. [16:01]
m0undsyeah, old stuff was 18awg 24VAC
new is all PoE
but we have redundant coverage now :)
[16:02]
brycecoh nice, so easily centralised power [16:02]
m0undsyeah, which is sooooo nice
much better than dragging 300ft of rg6 and power cable
hahaha
and since we have a presence in all hubs rather than just major ones, that helps too
the VMS (video mgmt system) has some cool tricks to work around failed cameras - we can assign values to how critical a camera is, and set presets for adjacent PTZs to point to the area where those critical cameras are pointed if a crit cam dies
so if we had something watching a transactional counter and it died, a ptz would automatically flip over to cover it til camera comes back up or we r&r it if it actually failed
[16:02]
brycecThat's handy. Not a perfect replacement obviously, since it won't be same angle and view
But definitely handy to have *some* coverage.
[16:05]
m0undsalso do other stuff like aggregating all point of sale transactions, with data associated with overhead cameras and things. you can watch a transaction occur in review and see the receipt tape
see the user, what they keyed in, etc just like the pos server would see it
dataveillance ftw
[16:05]
anisfarhanaYou work for casino right? [16:07]
.... (idle for 18mn)
m0undsyeah
gaming commission
[16:25]
anisfarhanaGaming comission? You taking care cctv for gaming commision or what? [16:30]
m0undsgaming commission regulates gaming for the casino
as regulators, we handle the surveillance system
separate from casino ops
[16:31]
anisfarhanaNever been to casino before hehe.
Not familiar with it.
[16:32]
brycecOh really? I had no idea... always assumed it was the casino's.
Does the casino have their own cctv too then?
[16:36]
m0undswe operate that [16:41]
sorry, had to step out - gaming commission regulates gaming within this tribal casino
surveillance dept is part of the gaming commision, and we provide the surveillance system that our operators use to regulate transactions and provide "a fair and equitable gaming environment"
in vegas, casinos own their surveillance depts, and they don't typically have large budgets. lots of casinos in lv are still on vhs or old digital recording.
[16:53]
anisfarhanaYou must know which machine is good for more winning! [17:01]
m0undshahaha
they have programmable hit probability that's set from the factory then validated by two third party auditors prior to deployment
i don't see eproms in my work, so i have no idea :)
[17:02]
anisfarhanaYeahhh right! :P [17:05]
m0undshaha [17:15]
anisfarhanaI love this humble bundle games..
Very cheap!
[17:15]
m0undsyeah, there's some good stuff there
i've been backing off of pc gaming a bit - most of my pc stuff has just been spent with planetside 2
[17:15]
anisfarhana...
Hate the local bank.
[17:16]
staticsafei plan on playing more planetside 2 once exams are done [17:17]
anisfarhanaThey blocked me already. [17:17]
m0undsstaticsafe: which server are you on? [17:17]
anisfarhanaHave to call them for verification sigh [17:17]
m0undsbooooo [17:17]
staticsafem0unds: Waterson [17:17]
m0undsah
i'm on connery
had an nc toon on mattherson but that server's a giant mess
not uncommon to see 50% TR pop during alerts
so dumb
[17:17]
staticsafeheh
VS here
[17:18]
m0undsconnery, depending on the time of day, it ends up being 40% VS or 40% NC during alerts [17:18]
staticsafei started playing more after the first optimization patch
had an account since the beta though
[17:18]
m0undsit made such a difference
same, i kept playing just not as much because perf was so bad
[17:18]
staticsafeonly one of my friends play it :( [17:19]
m0undsboooo
most of mine left to play league of legends or other stuff
couple of people i played with on and off after friends left annoyed me so i just kinda go solo for the most part
[17:19]
anisfarhanaNot active on others game atm.
Being addicted to BF4
[17:20]
m0undsone dude wouldn't ever stfu, just babbling constantly about his kdr, and the other guy would get pissed if everyone wasn't a medic so he could get revived and not screw up his kdr [17:21]
staticsafei don't even know what my KDR is
i just don't care
[17:21]
m0undsyeah, same

anisfarhanaHeh 6 collection games from humblebundle now [17:23]
m0undsflying can be tough [17:23]
staticsafeyea [17:23]
m0undsit took me a bit to get the hang of it. mosquito is a ton of fun to fly because it's so fast [17:23]
staticsafeyea i want to switch factions just to play with the mosquito >_>
maybe ill make a new character
[17:24]
m0undsone of my fav things to do is to drop into a canyon, stop, turn and hover and as the pursuing a/c flies over, light it up from the bottom with my rotary and watch it pop [17:24]
staticsafeplaying base defense with phalanx turrets vs. a horde of mosquitoes is so much fun [17:24]
m0undsmy TR on connery is m00nds (because canadians kept saying moonds instead of mounds)
yeah it is
[17:25]
staticsafei play engineer, MAXes love me
repair all the things
[17:26]
m0undsmax is my fav class i think
i rerolled my vs char (it was my launch char) because i spread myself way too thin w/certs
but i've played max so much, it's my dominant class i think
[17:26]
staticsafealso dropping ammo during base rushes == XP [17:27]
m0undsyeah
yeah, dominant class for my vs char is max, hahahah
https://players.planetside2.com/#!/5428109895937989489/classes

staticsafehttps://players.planetside2.com/#!/5428013610399066945/classes [17:29]

m0undsyeah
TR do a lot of hilarious gal drops on connery
[17:30]
i love tycho's "past is prologue" [17:35]

mnathanimilki: http://support.arpnetworks.com/kb/main/what-is-the-difference-between-my-ipv6-64-assigned-space-and-48-allocated-space
I saw that
I am curious about the experts only option
[20:23]
milkimnathani: probably just means email support and theyll give you full access and you just have at it [20:26]
mnathanithey do make it seem more involved and requiring custom configuration as there can now be multiple /64s routed [20:28]

milkibut its ok. youre an expert! [20:57]
.... (idle for 18mn)
brycecmnathani: I have my /48 setup
I wouldn't say I'm "using my entire /48" :P but I plan to shave off some /64s from it
mnathani: Setting it up is more complicated than just running a /64 -- With a /64, ARP is the router and your VPS is just a machine with an address or a billion
With a /48, your VPS acts as a router, and the /48 is routed to your VPS (using a link-local address rather than a global ipv6)
It's pretty simple, once setup.
(I believe toddf also has and uses his /48)
"For those customers, we will route the entire /48 block over a link-local address (fe80::/64). This is standard practice (RFC 3177, RFC 5375)."
wow that's exactly what I described :p
And now I have 1.2*10^24 and I have no idea what to do with them
then again I had no idea what to do with the 1.8*10^19 I started out with
I *hate* how 'wasteful' ipv6 is
RFC3177 can die in a fire
Also RFC6177, now that I look it up
[21:15]
mnathanibrycec: thanks for clarifying it for me
brycec: if I need to designate a VPS as router, how does that work when I have 2 VPS
[21:33]
brycecmnathani: Pick 1 :p The other would essentially just need its router address changed to point at the first.
Or, that's what I imagine it would be.
(read: I'm not speaking from experience)
[21:35]
mnathanibrycec: have you gone so far as to use ARP as a tunnel v6 in v4?
kinda like ipv6.he.net
[21:37]
brycecNot yet, but that's my plan.
Because HE isn't as reliable as ARP.
I'm told it's easy. By toddf.
[21:37]
mnathaniARP v4 is more reliable than v6 though [21:38]
