xiphias: hi
on my VPS i'm getting very slow download speeds
staticsafe: from where
xiphias: everywhere
staticsafe: give me an example
so I can test
xiphias: staticsafe: port updates
staticsafe: every single thing downloads shit slow
staticsafe: also i forgot you had ARP networks
staticsafe: xiphias: ports updates are fine here
xiphias: for me it peaked at like
60 kbps
***: robonerd has quit IRC (Quit: zzz)
xiphias: staticsafe: doesn't matter what i download though
staticsafe: everything is shit slow download speeds
staticsafe: xiphias: hm
xiphias: can confirm
xiphias: right now i'm doing portupgrade -a so that'll take a long time before i can do anything
-: staticsafe pokes up_the_irons
staticsafe: xiphias: its fine now o_o
there was some packet loss
RandalSchwartz: Hmm. Didn't google maps have some sort of user-contributed pile of possible overlays
m0unds_: yay, snow
i've seen third party aggregation of kml overlays
i've never seen google curate one

brycec has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
RandalSchwartz: it was available back in 2007
you could "publish" google map data
apparently, that's now gone
***: brycec has joined #arpnetworks
m0unds_: not surprising
RandalSchwartz: why not surprising?
m0unds_: probably didn't help monetize gmaps, or was a work sink

xiphffff: hi
my VPS i don't think is booting
RandalSchwartz: have you tried the VNC console to see?
xiphffff: problem
"no route to host"
RandalSchwartz: have you done a hard shutdown first, before rebooting?
no route to *which* host?
xiphffff: kvr29.arpnetworks.com
RandalSchwartz: works here
you have a crappy internet, apparently
xiphffff: worked for me a few minutes ago
now it's just refusing
RandalSchwartz: where are you in the world?
how far does a traceroute get?
xiphffff: i use my VPS on a daily basis, by the way.
and i live in pennsylvania
m0unds_: traceroute would be handy
RandalSchwartz: pennsylvania is known to have problems. :) :)
xiphffff: just saying
i've *never* had a problem until now
and i've had this VPS for months
staticsafe: mtr/traceroute pls
xiphffff: waiting on it
that's probably bad news #1
hm
there's another possibility
my bank killed the debit card i use for arpnetworks, never got it changed and it went past due date, it was alive until i rebooted
(and yes, i did change my details)
i figured i could pay it manually
staticsafe: xiphffff: i suggest e-mailing support@

m0unds_: cool. resetting the smc and clearing cache somehow fixed my erratic trackpad.

xiphffff: question
i reinstalled freebsd on my own
problem is networking doesn't work
and i don't know why that would be, everything seems to be correct
toddf: look at the ips listed in your portal details
ensure your gateway and such are set properly
xiphffff: yes, that's what i did
toddf: do you see the nic?
can you ping the gateway?
xiphffff: yeah, it's active
sec
toddf: what if you do 'ping6 ff02::1%em0' or s/em0/vio0/ or whatever
staticsafe: netstat -r and ifconfig in paste as well
xiphffff: pinging the gateway works
toddf: route -n get default
xiphffff: i'm doing this all through VNC because of course i can't get into sshd
toddf: I love doing that kindof thing via serial console
details are on your portal as well, you just have to upload a public key
xiphffff: oh.
oh dear
mkay
sec
toddf: but that won't help if you don't have serial consle setup in your os
and it won't change the fact that you obviously have some networking snafoo
hows the 'route -n get default' look ?
xiphffff: i don't have serial console setup yet
toddf: nomatter, I'm just sayin for future exploration purposes
xiphffff: route to: default, destination: default, mask: default, gateway: 208.79.91.217, fib: 0, interface: em0, flags: <UP,GATEWAY,DONE,STATIC>, recvpipe/sendpipe/ssthresh/rtt,msec are all 0, mtu is 1500, weight is 1, expire is 0
toddf: its just easy to cut and paste from a ssh term vs a vnc window, but in any event, you should have the ability to checkout your default route
if you can ping the gateway I'm thinking its not set
xiphffff: i get it
heh
here, i will show you my uh
rc.conf
toddf: grumph, traceroute -n 8.8.8.8 ?
I'm not a freebsd guru by any stretch so it may be of lesser value, gotta jet for real work(tm), best of luck
xiphffff: worked
nonetheless it is appreciated
staticsafe: xiphffff: is sshd started?
xiphffff: staticsafe: yes
staticsafe: i can't ping anything like google for example
ntpd is giving errors across the board
staticsafe: xiphffff: cat /etc/resolv.conf
xiphffff: empty
...yeah, i probably need to setup nameservers.
staticsafe: there is your problem
xiphffff: forgive me, i don't do sysadmin ever
eververververververv
this is an exercise
staticsafe: common mistake
xiphffff: http://support.arpnetworks.com/kb/main/dns-servers
xiphffff: k works now
