I have been a customer here for a few years now, but never really understood how the serial over ssh out of band management works
Is there something I need to enable on my VM?
mnathani: yes. e.g. in linux you need to need to enable a getty on ttyS0 in /etc/inittab
ant: would that result in a simulated keyboard and screen connected to that tty  when I connect via ssh to the serial port?
mnathani: more like a serial terminal connected to the port
ant: I am having trouble defining what a "serial terminal" is
Is it kind of like the old days where people would hook up terminals to a mainframe?

and the ssh <> serial takes care of input redirection?
what do you mean by "input redirection"
