that's a most interesting symptom of software maturity.
new features slow, support issues likely slow, so the assumption is the project is dead/dying. meanwhile it is so stable and ubiquitous that it is taken for granted.
github even enforces this with badge-like reenforcement for the most volume of commits.
commit volume is not and indicator of quality or robustness.
