WhoWhatWhen
mercutioi'd like to see resolutions go > 5000 horizontal, > 3000 vertical
i don't know why people keep wanting to do silght improvements
like why not jump stragiht to 5120x3200
[00:22]
toddfat least the chipset on my netbook has a max of 4096x4096 [00:27]
mercutioyour netbook has lcd inbuilt
netbooks are always going to be non-ideal for multitasking etc
[00:28]
toddfsure, doesn't mean I accept its builtin resolution of 1024x600 as my ideal pixel count workspace [00:28]
mercutiomy laptop has 1680x1050
i don't find it too bad
[00:28]
toddfxrandr --output LVDS1 --panning 1280x1024 .. helps a bit [00:29]
mercutiobut i don't try to show more than one thing on the screen at once [00:29]
toddfxterm -font 5x7 also helps [00:29]
mercutiosounds painful
i saw a laptop with 640x200 resolution once
[00:29]
toddfmy eyes (for 10+ years) are quite accustomed to this. I hate wasting pixels. [00:29]
mercutioyou could see the pixels
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_General-One
[00:29]
toddfheh [00:30]
mercutioi'm using quite a small font
i dunno how to check though
239x68 characters
so about 8 pixels wide
and 17 high?
[00:31]
toddf'quite a small font' heh. try 'xterm -font 5x7'
or if you have LC_CTYPE=utf-8 or somesuch, try: 'uxterm -font -Misc-Fixed-Medium-R-Normal--7-70-75-75-C-50-ISO10646-1'
presuming your .Xresources or .Xdefaults don't over-ride the font

mnathaniDoes anyone know how the PSTN network along with cellphones work? Like how do carriers know which provider a given number belongs to and how do they route calls
off topic I know, but figured someone here probably knows
[18:37]
sdkmvxSS7
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signaling_System_7
[18:38]
mnathanican analogies be made to Internet peers / transit [18:39]
RandalSchwartzThere's some central databases yes
well - the internet uses CIDR
can't do that with cell phones
each phone can be moved to a new carrier
so the routing is more complex
[18:39]
mnathanithat and the whole packet switchted vs circuit switched networking? [18:40]
RandalSchwartzimagine if each IPv4 could be on a different net :) [18:40]
sdkmvxRandalSchwartz, they can :) [18:40]
RandalSchwartzyou'd have a table with every single phone number in it, mapped to carrier
well - no
there are CIDR aggregations
otherwise, routers would have blown up long ago
[18:40]
mnathanismallest of which is a /24 [18:41]
RandalSchwartzeven v6 has aggregation
well no, the smallest for v4 is /28
I mean /30
[18:41]
mnathaniI thought you were referring to BGP announcements [18:41]
RandalSchwartz30 gives you router, host, broadcast, and mask [18:41]
sdkmvxwhich is two hosts [18:41]
RandalSchwartzahh ok
yeah BGP is probably /24
but within a BGP zone, /30 :)
v6 handles it a bit better
[18:41]
staticsafeindeed [18:42]
mnathani. /48 I guess [18:42]
RandalSchwartzI have 5 ipv6 /48's :) [18:42]
staticsafeit was designed from the ground up to be better [18:42]
mnathanibut back to the PSTN - who takes care of which phone number is assigned to which operator [18:43]
RandalSchwartzthere's a central mapping authority [18:43]
mnathanilike is there a central "verisign" like when it ccomes to .com's [18:43]
RandalSchwartzcarriers all subscribe to it
and update it for migration
supposedly only for cell phones
[18:43]
sdkmvxmnathani, the NANPA does it for north america (http://www.nanpa.com/). [18:44]
RandalSchwartzwhich is why google can migrate your cell number to google voice, but not your hardline [18:44]
sdkmvxRandalSchwartz, you can move landlines around, although there are often limitations. [18:45]
staticsafearea limits? [18:45]
sdkmvxyeah stuff like that
possile technical issues as well
possible*

up_the_ironsbrachiation: you still up? :) [23:15]
.... (idle for 17mn)
brachiationup_the_irons: yes i am. [23:32]
up_the_ironsbrachiation: how's it going? [23:41]
brachiationup_the_irons: pretty good. i was in the neighborhood earlier today, had do drop off some medical equipment for a patient. [23:43]
up_the_ironscool [23:44]
brachiationhowabout yourself? [23:44]
up_the_ironspretty good; just working (as always) [23:44]
brachiationyou should relax sometime and drink a bottle of something.
we can set up a party and invite all the greats.
but everyone is so spread out now :(
oh, i was setting up a humidifier for this russian family. as the 80 y/o man was pouring a clear liquid into the humidifier chamber, he said something in russian "blah blah vodka blah" and smiled.
i had to check to make sure he didn't actually put vodka in there, cause russians can be pretty hardcore.
[23:45]
up_the_ironsbrachiation: i actually do drink a bottle of something from time to time... trust me ;)
brachiation: LOL
brachiation: so was it vodka? ;)
[23:50]
brachiationnah it was water.
but he had me second guessing him.
especially because of the smile.
[23:50]
up_the_ironshaha [23:51]
brachiationhe was just joking with me. a lot of prankster elderly from what i've encoutered. [23:52]
up_the_ironslol
cool
[23:52]
brachiationmy wife said the elderly were the most flirtatious back when she worked in a hospital. [23:52]
up_the_ironsyeah my EMT teacher had some similar stories [23:53]
brachiationi can't say ive experienced the same though. [23:53]
up_the_ironsold ladies in ambulances hitting on him ;) [23:53]
brachiationhahaha
actually now that i think about it, there were at least 2 occasions for me.
also, lack of oxygen might make people act a little different.
or even worse when they are on morphine.
[23:53]
up_the_ironslike... the driver took a sharp turn and he fell on a lady in the gurney and she says, "what happens in the ambulance stays in the ambulance" LOL [23:55]
brachiationhahaha wow she is a born comdedian. [23:55]
up_the_ironsbrachiation: hah yeah.. wouldn't lack of oxygen be similar to being drunk? [23:56]
brachiationyeah people definitely act a little drunk.
but with confusion a lot of the time.
[23:56]
up_the_ironsyeah
ah
[23:56]
brachiationlike a short term dementia. [23:56]
up_the_ironsinteresting [23:57]
brachiationanytime someone acts weird like that, it is a good idea to have them take 'tests' for stroke.
the holding the arms forward, stick the tongue straight out, stuff like that.
if the tongue goes to one side, then that could be sign of stroke.
following your finger as you move it side to side. make sure both eyes move together.
[23:57]
up_the_ironsyeah
or tell the to say something about the sky is blue in cincinatti?
[23:59]
