FreeSpencerhow well does arp handle DDoS? I don't want my vps to be down due to somebody else getting ddos [14:42]
jpalmerthey "handle" it by having a strict zero tolerance policy. you get DDoS, you don't have an account. [14:43]

up_the_ironsup_the_irons nods
if someone *else* gets DDoS'd, however, FreeSpencer is asking about collateral damage, I believe. We put a lot of work into minimizing that. Big pipes in the network to handle it and host settings that are very fine tuned not to give out under a DDoS
[15:18]
FreeSpencerAhhh, so the client is kicked out then? [15:22]
brycecBlasted $OtherVPSProvider just gave me 7 hours notice that they'd be migrating my VPS... In theory it should come back up fine (though there are a lot of things I must manually restart), but I'm annoyed at the notice. And losing 564 days uptime. [15:25]
toddfbrycec: you get less notice if hardware has issues with arp, so don't consider that a unique event; hardware issues are not going to be predictable regardless. that they gave you 7 hours notice seems very nice [15:26]
brycecI understand hardware issues == no notice.
But I think 24 hours is a good courtesy
eg. What if I'm somewhere in eurasia and asleep when my pager goes off because my VPS is offline. If I'd had 24 hours notice, I could schedule my own downtime.
[15:26]
hazardousup_the_irons: that is because FreeSpencer is a well known minecraft host and massive ddos magnet that got kicked out of webnx, AIS, gorillaservers and corporatecolo [15:39]
FreeSpencerFalse
:(
[15:40]
hazardouspffft you know AIS hates you [15:40]
FreeSpencerNope
Where is AIS?
[15:40]
brachiationDoes anyone know if an NTP server is needed for VPS? [15:41]
hazardousno
you can act as a ntp client
brycec: $othervpsprovider somehow managed to send me a promo ad that made it to gmail inbox, and a downtime maint notification that made it to spambox. that was interesting to find
[15:41]
bryceclol hazardous [15:42]
hazardousthe weird part was they were both sent from the same ip, had the same headers and whatnot
conspiracy!
[15:42]
brycecI would've migrated off $othervpsprovider long ago if it weren't for a discount that made them nearly competitive with ARP. And time, if I had the time.... [15:43]
up_the_ironshazardous: wow, even corporatecolo? i used to run that shop... hard to get kicked outta there ;) [15:43]
hazardoushahahah
up_the_irons: what happened to them anyways
they're selling 26gb ram dedis for $49
like, when did that happen
[15:43]
FreeSpencerI heard corporatecolo was very stringent on DDoS [15:44]
up_the_ironshazardous: are they? thought they only did colo [15:44]
FreeSpencerLike once and done [15:44]
hazardousnope, they do 40-50usd 26gb ram dedis
it really weirded me out when i first saw it
[15:44]
FreeSpencerIts under a really crappy brand name [15:44]
hazardous^
at least they subsidaried it
but in the same ad they still say we are corporate colo, so
[15:44]
up_the_ironshmmm... don't see it on their site [15:44]
FreeSpencerneedaserver.net [15:44]
up_the_ironsmaybe a customer of theirs? [15:44]
hazardousneedaserver.net
they've been aggressively advertising it lately
like within th last month or two ,poped out of nowhere
[15:45]
FreeSpencerAnd it uses an ugly ass template too [15:45]
hazardousthey bought those dumb WHT corporate and premium mebmerships to post more often too
and picked out all the bonuses
like yellow background, big text, bold text on thread title
[15:45]
***robonerd has quit IRC (Quit: zzz) [15:45]
up_the_ironslooks to be a customer of theirs. the pics are indeed the corpcolo data center. [15:46]
FreeSpencerIts posted on WHT by the same person who posts corporate colo ads [15:47]
up_the_ironsah interesting
up_the_irons shrugs
[15:47]
hazardousregistrant email is victor@corporatecolo.com
that being said i also thoguht they only did colo
[15:47]
brycec(lots of text copy/pasted between corporatecolo.com and needaserver.net)
It would make sense that they would expand into other related markets... And to do so under a different name makese sense
[15:49]

up_the_ironsbmacs: how much power is required? are you local or remote? [16:41]
bmacsI'm local. and the server in not crazy full of drives or anything… so prob 1A - 1.5A for the power [16:42]
up_the_ironslooks like you might be local judging by ip... [16:42]
bmacshaha, yes. [16:42]
up_the_ironswell, truth be told, we're basically out of colo space [16:43]

up_the_ironsbmacs: is there a particular reason you wanted to be in the annex building?
(just wondering)

bmacsYeah… I'm currently in it with another provider, but they are losing their lease and want to move me an hour away
Do you guys have space in other buildings?

bmacs: no, just in coresite

robonerdhow can i generate 0 or 1 randomly please?
(in c)
[17:34]
RandalSchwartzint(rand(2)) I think
been a while since I coded C
no wait. rand doesn't take an arg
int(2 * rand())
[17:38]
robonerd0 or 1?
nvm
[17:38]
RandalSchwartzoh - you should be using random instead... hold on
yes - that makes 0 or 1
[17:38]
robonerdwhich? [17:39]
RandalSchwartzit's a random float from 0 to 1.99999999
int(2 * rand())
that'll work
but let me see what it says on the random man page
oh wait... not like Perl. it returns an int
darn it :)
"man 3 random". The info is there
ahh. int((double) random() / (double) RAND_MAX) * 2)
just did a bit of the ol google
the RAND_MAX does the right scaling
[17:39]
robonerdrand() % 2 worked, why? [17:44]
RandalSchwartzit's bad [17:45]
robonerdwhy [17:45]
RandalSchwartzthe low bit isn't very random-ish
you need to grab the higher bits
they're a lot more random
[17:45]
robonerdok so offer improvement? [17:46]
RandalSchwartzint((double) random() / (double) RAND_MAX) * 2)
I did
oops... missing paren
int(((double) random() / (double) RAND_MAX) * 2)
... http://www.azillionmonkeys.com/qed/random.html
... The quality of rand() on most systems is not that good; in particular the low bits can follow a short cyclical pattern, or there can be dependencies between the bits
this is stuff I learned 30 years ago :)

thx for trying to help me though

RandalSchwartzwhich code was yours?
if that % 2 thing, that's *not* working
and if you accept that as working, I worry for the state of programming in general.

robonerdup_the_irons how do your vps's work for viop services?
voip
i want to launch a communications platform
[23:03]
toddfrobonerd: if you don't stay on long enough to wake me up feel free to dial 4052279094 .. thats an asterisk system terminating that # via voip.ms (with an amazing latency of 0.503ms) ..
s/wake me up/wake my wife up/
seriously though, it works fine for my needs (thats my asterisk + mail system + one openafs server `in one')
and if you are serious about launching a communications platform you should be able to spend $5/mo while you research the vps capabilities at arpnetworks to confirm it works for your needs
otherwise I'd not give you much hope in earning my business

up_the_ironsrobonerd: it goes to an access switch, then core router, then to peers / transit [23:29]
bmacsbut which of those things does the raping? [23:31]
brycechttp://dictionary.reference.com/browse/rape "the unlawful compelling of a person through physical force or duress to have sexual intercourse."
