up_the_irons: OCZ Agility 3 vs. Vertex 4, any thoughts? (i know the 3 is older...)
CaZe: For what?
hazardous: fusionio
plz
up_the_irons: CaZe: servers
brycec: iirc the Agility 3 had higher throughput, but the Vertex 4 (based on the new controller) had higher IOPS
mercutio: up_the_irons: vertex4, but samsung better
up_the_irons: mercutio: which samsung?
mercutio: brycec: agility 3 has slower throughput, especially for writes and uncompressable data
up_the_irons: 840 pro atm, but 840 evo is going to be really good when it's here
but even 840 non pro is good
esp if 250gb size
mikeputnam: http://www.nextventured.com/2013/samsung-pays-apple-1-billion-sending-30-trucks-full-of-5-cent-coins/
mercutio: basically 840 has slower write speeds, and less life...
but even the 840 non pro does 530mb/sec read
at 128gb
840 evo has a small SLC area, that's used as write cache etc
up_the_irons: mikeputnam: wuht?? LOL
mercutio: so even the smaller drives can give nice burst performance until you use them heaps
mikeputnam: it's fake apparently. nevermind.
mercutio: until you sustain writes that is
up_the_irons: mikeputnam: ah ok.. yeah i was thinking that 1 billion in nickles is way more than 30 trucks
mercutio: 840 non pro is really good value if you want something reliable, cheap, and of ok performance
but if you are doing heaps of writes they could only last 10 yeras or such
and if you do stupid number of writes your'e meant to use hard-disks :)
http://www.anandtech.com/show/7173/samsung-ssd-840-evo-review-120gb-250gb-500gb-750gb-1tb-models-tested/4
so 128gb evo has about 7 seconds write cache
vertex 4 does a write amplification reducing technique leading to good write performance
but it's ocz, ..
i have one samsung 128gb, and one samsung 256gb both non pro
and i used to have an agility 3 64gb, and i have a agility 4 128gb
although i gave away the agility 3
cos it's better for windows which has terrible compression
up_the_irons: mercutio: i think i'm gonna get some of the 840 pro's. tnx for the tip. vertex 4 has good specs, but if you read the "1" reviews on newegg, they all seem to complain about failure after a year
can't have that...
840 pro reviews are amazingly high, even if specs are lower
mercutio: up_the_irons: heh
up_the_irons: yeah, if you can afford it 840 pro is good choice
or the intel 3500
http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/solid-state-drives/solid-state-drives-dc-s3500-series.html
up_the_irons: the 840 is a bit high at $139 for 128GB, but it's not *that* bad..
mercutio: but that intel one is expensive most likely
how much is the non pro at that size?
when i was contemplating things i decided to go with 256gb 840 rather than 840 pro 128gb
up_the_irons: mercutio: i think like $99
mercutio: do your systems take 2.5" drives?
cos another noticable thing is that the wdc raptor drives came down in cost a bit
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136929
$100 for 300gb
10k rpm hard-disk
up_the_irons: mercutio: i use icydock converters, so 2.5 isn't an issue
mercutio: ahh ok
up_the_irons: mercutio: the power consumption on the samsungs are siginificantly less than the OCZ (0.069W vs. 2.5W, active)
hazardous: wtf
0.069 vs 2.5? how the hell does that work?
mercutio: up_the_irons: yeah
up_the_irons: hazardous: dunno
mercutio: i thought it was more like 0.7watts to 4watts
they have an extra 0 in there i think
but ocz idle power cosunption is good
up_the_irons: ah, still..
.69 better than 2.5
mercutio: lots of people look at active power consumption
but the thing is ssd's go from idle to active really quickly
and back again really quick
up_the_irons: idle on ocz is 1.3W
mercutio: it's the reliability that makes me say no to ocz
btw
with all ssd's you're meant to short stroke for best performance
like not partition 10% of the disk
i perosnally prefer the idea of 2x300gb wdc raptor disks, than 2x128gb ssd's
for a server
for desktop i like ssd more
but i hate running out of space on a server
and the noise not such a concern
i suppose lots of people are keen on ssd's though
up_the_irons: there is a demand for ssds, yeah
***: robonerd has quit IRC (Quit: zzz)
mercutio: there are meant to be these adapter things you can get where you turn a pci slot into a rear ssd drive bay
which i reckon could help on some servers that only take two hard-disks to have a ssd cache or such, but bcache etc is still too new for most people to want to touch

brycec: I run Opsview Community
Good stuff
Not a fan that they took away all the "Community" features
so I'm stuck on an "old version"
As it so happens, I'm trying to write a quick notification handler for Pushover (I say "try" because it turns out that Nagios pushes over 200 environment variables)
stevenc: opsview is indeed nice
