hi up_the_irons, was wondering how are the IO performance on your VPS plan (Medium / All Purpose) if I set a boot-encrypted (softraid) root volume (OpenBSD).. Would you be able to run some dd tests? cam13: running dd via softraid is hardly io performance testing, its more cpu + softraid + io performance testing all in one; there are no known io restrictions on the vps systems; if you use too much io you might be asked to stop politely or impolitely depending .. otherwise most times people are happy with the io, unless someone else is using too much on their particular host; generally speaking its really really fast ;-) yeah right, overall vps performance i meant :) i was just doing some tests on another provider, and i found quite a lot of difference between running softraid and without.. using same vps specs, going from 120MB/s to 10-16MB/s. Can see that its quite cpu intensive. i am just not sure what kind of performance I should expect. Not planning to saturate the physical host, but just thinking "what if I need to copy big chunk of data".. go unencrypted and dont wait or go encrypted and go for a softraid crypto is not designed to saturate disks with io, it is designed to be secure. I'm not sure I've seen better than 10-16mb/s on physical hosts. wah.. physical host itself.. i actually havent tried.. only playing with VPS.. my physical laptop for example sustains reads of 8-10mb/s in raidC whereas the physcal disk goes from 50mb - 72mb/s ok if you are copying large data and there is no timeout, it will just take longer, thats all if you are needing encryption, it will be worth it ;-) or maybe do a tradeoff, one partition (/) not encrypted, and /foo using softraid c tends to not need writes, if you need encryption, whole disk encryption seems best, otherwise a compromised kernel etc could weaken your security imho hmm yeah.. after we come to the definition of "security" on a VPS :) *shrug* .. groveling in mem could reveal keys so yes indeed ;-) dead quiet in here gbayley: thats cuz our VPS's are running so well, we don't have any support questions to ask :/ hehe I'm trying to provision an additional one but Garry seems to be away today awesome watching myself ping out netsplit central hahaha welcome to netsplitopia
