brycec: Hey toddf - Do I remember correctly that you do all your IPv6 tunneling through your ARP VPS/v6 block?
With how crappy HE has been for me (and others) over the last week, I'm going to try dropping them and setting up my own v6 tunnels courtesy of ARP's native v6
***: toorop has joined #arpnetworks
avj has quit IRC (Quit: ircII EPIC5-1.1.5 -- Are we there yet?)
toddf: brycec: actually I do the opposite, I do v6 native to he.net and sometimes tunnel v4 inside v6 since arp doesn't bill for v6. given my bandwidth utiliziation is so low on v4 I maybe should consider what you've suggested. Something tells me it would definately be more reliable ;-)
and yes the he.net instabilities for v6 tunnels (free is hard to argue, but when its stable for so long, then out for a whole day, its very frustrating indeed) have driven me crazy in the last 6 months
I tried to apply for a sixxs.net tunnel, but I must have missed their response or done it wrong, may try again, so I can have two tunnel options
I know my energies would be spent better lobbying my local isp (COX) to actually roll out v6 in my city, haven't gotten enough energy behind it to actually do anything about it beyond put bugs in any techies ears that I talk to in the normal course of cox stuff
***: gcw|mbpro has quit IRC (Remote host closed the connection)
brycec: lol yeah good luck
My v6 utilization is kindof high (10-100GB/mo range) but I've got b/w to spare on ARP
If only ARP could give me a faster connection to the 'net :p
***: heavysixer has quit IRC (Quit: heavysixer)
toddf: v6 utilization is not graphed nor tracked at arp
-: brycec is well aware
brycec: (but the v4 tunnel traffic would count, which is what matters when it comes to b/w)
toddf: of course
I am deficient in measuring my at home stats
etoomanyotherpriorities
guess I could compare daily output on the appropriate gif interfaces to he.net to see how that would fare
brycec: heh, pfSense just does it all for me :p

brycec: up_the_irons: ping
-: up_the_irons hears a ping
brycec: ohai
Didn't know if you were in the channel while handling tickets
Got no pong, so I replied to the ticket
up_the_irons: brycec: i generally don't reply to pings, preferring the actual question to come out eventually... ;)
brycec: heh
I will keep that in mind for next time
In the meantime, I look forward to the answer to "How does having a /48 break my IPv6? What do I need to update besides prefixlen?" up_the_irons
-: brycec scratches his head and works to grok the response
brycec groks
jpalmer: new fun question of the week. "When I firewall TCP, nothing seems to work.. why is that?" "What ports ar eyou firewalling off?" "all of them"
staticsafe: yea
some people should *never* touch firewalls/ACLs
brycec: lol
http://memegenerator.net/instance/36938466
up_the_irons: brycec: does my explanation make more sense?
brycec: yeah, fun with routing
routing via LL rather than public pi
*IP
up_the_irons: yeah
brycec: done
brycec: do I get the LL for the other side? :)
up_the_irons: yeah just updated the ticket
we keep it simple: fe80::1/64
brycec: (this is when brycec finds out his SSH to his VPS was over ipv6 and not the vpn connection like he thought
up_the_irons: and you should make fe80::2/64
(we route to ::2)
LOL

brycec: for the record, that timeout was just HE being its dick self
But woo I'm back online, my ARP VPS now has a /48
up_the_irons: :)
brycec: lol "Usable IPs: All"
up_the_irons: well it's true!
brycec: up_the_irons: you could've destroyed the table formatting and put the actual number :P 1,208,925,819,614,629,174,706,176
whoa... I thought ahead and had the range defined as a /48 in dns.he.net already
I scare myself sometimes
up_the_irons: lol
brycec: up_the_irons: So 2607:f2f8:a658::1 is the ipv6 router?
up_the_irons: brycec: not anymore
brycec: well that was in my traceroute
up_the_irons: you can use ::1 on your side now
brycec: *traceroute6
up_the_irons: hmm
brycec: it's in a different /48
so I figured that was the router's own address
-: brycec is a650, not a658
up_the_irons: nah, it should be fe80::1%vlan374
not sure why you see that other one
brycec: not that it matters, was just curious because that's the first hop on my traceroute6 out
(2607:f2f8:a658::1 then CoreSite, then HE, HE tunnel, and then my target hanging off an HE tunnel)
(An inbound traceroute shoes CoreSite then my VPS immediately after)

Micah_: Someone help me connect to my VPS with VNC
arenlor: Micah_: What OS?
Micah_: Ubuntu Linux 12.04
arenlor: what exact issue are you having?
Micah_: When I connect using VNC the window is terminated immediately
I tried it on a friend's computer as well and same thing happens
arenlor: Micah_: And you've double checked it's running and you have the right port and all?
Micah_: All the info is correct, it is running and I've tried rebooting.
arenlor: Micah_: What are you using on both ends?
Micah_: Wait what?
I just got the info and entered it into my vnc viewer
and it's not connecting correctly
arenlor: Micah_: What viewer and server are you using?
Micah_: Hold on a second
Real VNC
arenlor: I use tightvnc on both ends.
Micah_: what port should I use for the VNC server
arenlor: Micah_: It doesn't matter, I just use the default.
Micah_: ok
arenlor: ok so i connected to my viewer now but it's just a grey screen
arenlor: Micah_: Do you have GNOME or the like installed?
Micah_: yes
i think so
arenlor: Micah_: Is it started?
Micah_: hm
i dont think so
give me a minute
arenlor: http://tombuntu.com/index.php/2008/02/08/starting-and-stopping-gnome-from-the-command-line/
mjp: are you trying to VNS to the VPS management console or the OS?
&VNC
Micah_: arenlor: Failed to load session "ubuntu"
brycec: mjp++
Micah_: arenlor: Failed to load session "ubuntu"
getting that error
here's a screenshot http://puu.sh/2yrMZ
arenlor: Not sure, seems something is busted.
It'd hit up #ubuntu
