anyone know how the 'quota' command can read aquota.user as a regular user, when its perms are 600?

i actually can't get this working within the chroot (complains it can't read that file).  yet /usr/bin/quota is not suid root or anything... hhmmmm HRMMMMM....
strace?
probably some device it opens or something, the file may be the persistent data that survives reboots

maybe acl's over-ride unixy perms?

Also I run Cinnamon, which is Mint's default WM
I'm a Gentoo user, but I'm considering using something simpler and easier to maintain just because I've got a lot going on

phlux: I can sympathize. Former Gentoo user here. I've found Arch to be a nice step up from Gentoo - rolling release, bleeding edge, but at the same time, most everything is packaged and works well.
And I run Debian for my Linux servers, so I guess that counts as a +1 for Mint
I gave Arch a shot before Gentoo, actually.
Mint *does* have a rolling release (their Debian version)
It's definitely nothing against Gentoo or Arch
I installed it as our desktop OS since my wife would have no clue how to navigate Gentoo
but I kind of fell in love with the software manager and whatnot...that stuff is neat.
It's like an app store, but for Linux!
Now that I'm 24, I couldn't care less about "elitist" Linux users how how 1337 I look running a certain version of Linux anyhow

Immediately gave her a Linux Mint disc
She loved it, so I threw it on the desktop
Guess that's solved then. She already uses and loves Mint, so go for it. One fewer distro to support
And if it's Apt, then you can run apticron for easy email notification of updates

Nothing beats bringing up a brand new server, complete with basic config, in 10 minutes. And switching to Debian gave that to me, along with really, really painless updates.

I still prefer my servers FreeBSD, although I have some Debian ones too
I'd just really hate to install Mint and end up losing what little "know-how" I have :P

I think with laptops, painless updates are important
So I think I'm going to move it over to Linux Mint Debian
but the desktop will run Gentoo damnit!
