xmonad +1 I used to use xmonad, for what that's worth. But a man can only take so much Haskell I find awesome to be a step up from xmonad. toddf: cwm! o/\o ll/n if one prefers tiling wm's I hear spectrwm is worth looking at (I've been 'floating' for too long to think that way) Yeah I hear about it from time to time... For my desktop at work, I'm running Cinnamon with a tiling plugin (http://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/extensions/view/21) which really just gives shortcuts for resizing, but I'm liking it. jpalmer: floating means you have overlapping windows that you yourself move to where they are. tiling means no overlapping windows everything is resized according to the wm behavior and in neat little boxes that you can flip in groups or whole desktops to hide/unhide windows depending on the tiling wm. ahh, I guess I'm a "floater" then. If you have to ask, you're a floater. ^ The idea of tiling is that window size is maximized automatically by the window manager, no overlap, and generally no gaps between windows. And the only time you see the desktop is if there are no windows open. It's good stuff IMHO brycec: I ack that for some it is awesome and works very well. for my personal workflow, my terms need to be 80x25 and if I resize them fine, but I can't stand a wm that auto resizes things for me and wastes space by forcing no overlap. will show a pic in a few to illustrate what is going to be impossible for tiling wm's (though proportedly spectrwm has floating support somehow) (awesome allows you to float windows too) I have a "floating" workstyle, but with a "snaptoo" utility running, so if I move a window so the border touches certina key points.. it goes full screen, half-screen snapped right, half screen snapped left, half screen snapped top, half screen snapped bottom.. or, if needed, quarter screen snapped corner sounds like windows similar, but this is on OSX heh I use BetterTouchTool to do that on OSX http://todd.fries.net/pub/tiling.png I use BetterSnapTool noway I fit into the peg of a tiling wm, and that image should have been named 'floating' but anyway toddf: holy jebus @ 200+ irssi channels! thats a bit of a misnomer, one setting has things pegged to the same window #, and another setting saves those correlations, so I end up with gaps boo! i don't think i could read that font size toddf I can't stand to waste pixels, thats why the border is 1 pixel in size, i tried 0 pixels, but that was too confusing I read the font just fine on any terminal I have ever seen, including a 640x480 zaurus don't ask me to read it from across the room, but .. Talking of tiling window managers, I now use i3wm on my laptop and my machine at work. I used to use dwm, but it's too much like hard work god that font is awful i don't think it's the font size but the font i use "inconsolata" as my fixed-width font, before i used one called "glass". i think those are the two that i've liked the most, personally. poop I tend to just use "fixed" as my font in rxvt nothign on twitter wb [FBI] :/ Hooray I can IRC again. Thumbs down to whoever used all the bandwich. anyone having ipv6 connectivity problems? lol yes crazed seems bgp-based okay i can't even ping my gateway without packet loss My traceroute (from HE, in LA) took me out to Michigan before going kablooey interesting that's better than me --- 2607:f2f8:af50::1 ping6 statistics --- 81 packets transmitted, 6 packets received, 92.6% packet loss lax -> den -> chi -> merit.edu -> mich.net -> poof up_the_irons: FIXIT There's the man of the hour. looks like it's back up actually still getting packet loss, but i can route out now I can route in ! haha Yeah, things are looking better. i don't have a way to test that, no other ipv6 what ip? yeah it's back up we must be the 5 people using ipv6 on the internet not getting any packetloss doing `ping6 arpnetworks.com` now from a native v6 host in north carolina any2... < mercutio> but 100 megabit total for everyone? <-- no Hurricane Electric 6939 1827795 265393 0 00:07:01 11574 well at least it's back what's that line showing just did: sudo mkfs.ext3 /dev/md3 on a 3TB software RAID 1 oh the vast space of the universe available to me now... up_the_irons: how come couldn't ping the gateway then? mercutio: not sure got a meeting at 7PM, bbl up_the_irons: can i get vpn credentails before you pop out :v hazardous: sorry but no, i'm already late and need to fight traffic. the cert generation takes a little bit of time. okay check pms when youre back then, not to time sensitive gl with meetin lol i bet garry regrets having an irc channel sometimes if i'm on irc, it's because i'm on the computer (obviously), but if i'm on the computer it's usually because i'm working, and when i'm working (even if i'm on irc) it sucks to have people asking you to do shit all the time (especially when you're in the middle of doing other shit) haha i know what you mean garry (from my observation) does very well with time management. he'll open the chat channel for a calculated amount of time, then go away until he's ready to chat again. seems that he's fostering a good following and community in his userbase, good investment of time IMHO, and I've never seen him say anything regarding 'dont talk to me now busy doing xyz' .. either he's not here, or he's able to chat, not much inbetween. oh no, i certainly wasn't complaining i just think that, at times, it can lead to unrealistic expectations from customers case in point: he joined the channel earlier and somebody, almost immediately, says "FIXIT" It could. But I think that anyone who's been around for more than a week has come to realize that he's not simply lurking, that he will eventually respond, etc jlgaddis: That was me, and I was just kidding around. Mostly, it was just an excuse to hilight him in case he wasn't aware of the problems hypothetical: potential customers joins channel, asks question, garry is here and responds quickly, etc.; said customer may later expect to just pop in here at any time and get an immediate response and be upset when they don't. brycec: ahhh, gotcha lol jlgaddis: To be fair, that same exact situation could happen with e-mail support And I think we've come to realize that e-mail support gets about the same attention as IRC (at least that's my impression) i've been a customer for a couple of years now and even when there have been outages, i tend to just sit quietly and wait. i know that's he on it and will get it fixed asap and he usually always keeps us updated on what's going on. yeah, the 'quick responses sometimes' and 'batch responses during quick times' tends to weed out the type of time sucking clients being discussed above yeah, i may ping him if i'm not certain he's aware of something but, other than that, i tend to just stfu and wait patiently =) anybody who's around here will attest and confirm its a fact that whatever the issue it will get tended to one way or the other, its just a matter of patience ;-) *nod* obviously his system is working for him, it was just an observation. oh yeah, i'm well aware of that the perception that 'new customers might get the wrong impression' is what I'm talking about. even if they do, they'll complain here, and others (not garry usually) will calm them down or they might even go away; garry (and the rest of us who are customers) generally are not sad to see someone go who is causing undue strain on whatever (garry's nerves, systems, etc) garry's nervous system well, to me it actually seems more consistent than most places. most places are much more variable with support times although i'm used to having to raise things multiple times with most places, and it seems that he responds sooner or later, rather than having to constantly harass. hazardous: how do you manage that/ :) by having small budgets and in the past having used hosts where asking for ipv6 results in http://i.imgur.com/U1C5S.png wtf so by now i have no expectations, and just resolve to be pleasantly surprised when something goes well 'wtf' is right fwiw i went with arp cos of ipv6, openbsd, los angeles i have no idea how to use bsd of any kind, so even though it's more expensive than most places gonna learn w/my new arp box tho~ heh i like openbsd it's little things like having good man pages and not having lots of crap installed that you don't want but yet having useful things like tmux bundled by default well at least now days :) there are a few things that annoy me slightly but it's static annoyances rather than random annoyances things like the default tcp window size being too small yea /win 69 oops jlgaddis: i don't regret the irc channel at all; i still get a kick out of it. i remember when it was just like 5 users. if i don't want to respond (busy), i simply don't. in my younger days it may have bothered me that i was "leaving someone hanging", but now it doesn't bother me. i gladly send customers away if they want instant support. i recommend my competition and let it be their problem. ;) and what toddf says is right, i'm either here or i am not, i don't stress on it. it's not an official support channel, more like all of us just hanging out. up_the_irons: you read scrollback though! mercutio: yeah, if it's not too long sometimes i come here and there's like 28 pages of scrollback and i'm like 'ugh, i can't read it all...' up_the_irons: hahaha man, long f'in day today... Sure is.
