I think Backup MX is a little over-rated, for the most part any reasonable sending domain is going to store-and-forward, so you're find as long as your primary doesn't have an extended outage
also, disclaimer, I work for dyn.com, so I'm biased anyway
*nod*  we only have one mx rr in our zone and those of our customers that we manage
worst case scenario, the barracuda shits itself and is gonna be a couple days, i can deploy a backup mx host in ~20 mins and add it to dns
i'm kinda pissed at zoneedit, they won't let me consolidate accounts or transfer credits

I recently deployed an arp vps for a client specifically for backup mx as phase1 and as a warm standby backup mail system as phase2 (as I get it setup)
they and I have experienced stupid admins at not small companies running exchange servers that do stupid things like try a couple times over the course of 5-10 mins then _discard_ messages (to avoid postmaster notifications or user interaction if mail is undeliverable)
yeah, sure, they desreve what they get, yada hada
however, be gracious in what you accept, strict in what you send
translates in my world to be "backup mx has a purpose, it can queue mail when stupid remote mail servers would otherwise not" as a use case
yeah sure I can deploy something in 20mins .. if I happen to be notified the instant something goes down, if I happen to be at a keyboard at the time, etc.
I'm coming off a 2 day outage of my own personal availability due to stomach bug so that speaks volumes about 'if' being the operating word

I pay to have my DNS hosted, i didn't find it worth the time and hassle to host my own :)
I've been doing it for 15 years now, its like using 'vi', 2nd nature, not gonna pay someone to handle what I can .. tends to be useful when admin'ing others systems which also host dns .. ;-)
