mike-burns: The weather has been miserable every time I've been to SF.
ant: i was to sf once. nice sunny day, warm, no fog. in the middle of march 2012. must have been really lucky

mikeputnam: where can a midwest family of 5 move to in CA and not have heart attacks over the cost of living?
oh and never see snow?
yesterday temp here? 7F/-13C
this is getting old
spent new years eve shoveling my ROOF
oh and 2400sq ft of house for $150k
that ought to do it
-: mikeputnam assumes he could get a sub-lease rental of a tent someones yard in Mountain View for $150k
mikeputnam: (per month probably)
mike-burns: I hear Spain is cheap and warm.
brycec: heh
mikeputnam: Does it have to be CA? Or you just looking for someplace warmer?
mikeputnam: i do like san jose/SF area, but no CA not required
los angeles seems nice and temperate
brycec: Just a bit east is Arizona. Far cheaper, less congested, and no earthquakes (or other natural disasters)
source: I'm sitting here now
kraigu: brycec: yeah, but no hockey teams!
brycec: kraigu: ? Phoenix Coyotes
not that hockey is very big in the US anyways
kraigu: brycec: er
oh, right. duh.
it was Atlanta who relocated.
brycec: We've had plenty of strikes and such, but the team is still here (for now)
kraigu: I understand it's mostly Canadian ex-pats who attend the games.
brycec: heh
dr_jkl: hmm.
#%!$ing openbsd

up_the_irons: mikeputnam: 2400 sq ft of house for 150K is a dream in SoCal. I don't think that would be possible anywhere around Los Angeles.
dr_jkl: yawn
morning up_the_irons
mikeputnam: up_the_irons: ;)
up_the_irons: mornin'!
dr_jkl: up_the_irons: i did something stupid
up_the_irons: actually, just turned 'noon
dr_jkl: do you know that when you tell your host to mount an iso for you, you should be _really really sure_ you gave them the right one?
up_the_irons: yep
dr_jkl: i gave you a 5.2 snapshot iso, and today when i went to install shit
nothing worked
up_the_irons: that's why i make people give me the url :)
dr_jkl: and i was like AAGGH WHY
so this
< dr_jkl> #%!$ing openbsd
and my support request
up_the_irons: saw that :)
dr_jkl: are related
lol
up_the_irons: i'm about to head out.. do u want a quick iso change?
dr_jkl: ^^
dr_jkl: yes
i made a ticket
up_the_irons: k
dr_jkl: done
dr_jkl: thx
go go gadget reinstall
up_the_irons: :)

staticsafe: im tempted to replace FreeBSD with Gentoo on mine heh
***: jdoe has left
mercutio: i used a snapshot of openbsd before
dr_jkl: i wonder why openbsd's partition scheme is the way it is
CaZe: I left the default OpenBSD iso as it is.
dr_jkl: with 20 gig disks it means some of those partitions are awful small
i tend to just make a / mount
CaZe: If I ever blow away the boot loader again, I can just run the installer for any iso, just past the point where it installs the bootloader.
brycec: that sounds painful staticsafe
CaZe: (after formatting, before unpacking the sets)
staticsafe: brycec: not really, i run Gentoo on my desktop at home
CaZe: You could also just use the installer shell to fetch any bsd.rd image.
mercutio: dr_jkl: you don't have to partition it the suggested way
dr_jkl: most hard-disks are /way/ bigger than they need to be these days
even ssds are bigger than 20gig
on my vm i just have / and swap too
brycec: staticsafe: I've had really, really terrible experiences running Gentoo in production environments (which I kindof assume VPS' are)
Much as I <3 rolling release (I'm an Arch guy at home), it doesn't work well when it comes to "don't break shit"
CaZe: I've got / and /home. No swap.
(I only have 7 GB)

mnathani: what time is the D-root name server IPv6 address change expected today?
-: brycec was unaware of such a change coming
brycec: mnathani: ipv6 is staying the same, ipv4 address is changing. No time given. http://d.root-servers.org/renumber.html
mnathani: brycec: right, the ipv4 address is changing
