staticsafe | up_the_irons is the only staff
might want to file a ticket | [11:09] |
dominicl | I filed a ticket. How long does it usually take for a reply?
staticsafe: are you a user of arpnetworks then? | [11:10] |
staticsafe | I am | [11:12] |
dominicl | staticsafe: can you vouch for their services? are they easy to work with in terms of price? what service do you have?
staticsafe: dedi or vps? | [11:13] |
staticsafe | dominicl: I have a VPS | [11:17] |
dominicl | staticsafe : ah ok, thinking of getting a dedi from these guys if they reply to my sales question :p | [11:18] |
staticsafe | ah cool
dominicl: tis the weekend, might have to wait a bit | [11:18] |
dominicl | staticsafe - are they usually quick? | [11:19] |
staticsafe | dominicl: i haven't had a need to file a support ticket yet ;) | [11:19] |
dominicl | wow nice | [11:19] |

I should set that up again, privoxy/polipo/ziproxy made mobile browsing suck a lot less. | [13:05] |

toddf | dominicl: so you know, arpnetworks is not staffed 24/7 .. they permit you to automatically reset your own system, have serial console, video console, etc from remote available. so unless something majorly goes south, things are generally not needing them to spend time, which in turn factors into the low cost they charge for the service. it is a tradeoff. those of us that are happy are quite happy with the tradeoff. | [13:38] |

phlux | does anyone use anything like darkstat, but will give you an actual amount of bandwidth used over a period of time?
darkstat shows min KB/s, avg, and max, but not the total | [15:30] |
mercutio | mrtg
bwd http://bandwidthd.sourceforge.net/ bandwidthd tells total mrtg/cacti show average etc but you can work out total | [15:30] |

doesn't look like they do *nix stuff anymore bah, found it sourceforge is just being dumb | [16:14] |
gluffis | probably :D | [16:19] |
....... (idle for 30mn) | ||
phlux | wtf
idk what's using so much bandwidth on my arp vps, but it's already used 16MB in a matter of minutes.. | [16:49] |
gluffis | trafshow, iptraf and such tools will give you a realtime view of network traffic | [16:51] |
phlux | thanks | [16:54] |
gluffis | tcpdump is a 'bit' less easy to use ;) | [16:56] |
phlux | i wonder if it has to do with this tinyproxy i've setup..
i'm the only one that can connect to it afaik | [17:00] |
gluffis | well, iptraf will tell you ports as well | [17:01] |
phlux | i don't see iptraf in ports anywhere | [17:01] |
gluffis | openbsd ? | [17:02] |
phlux | FreeBSD | [17:02] |
gluffis | ok... might be something similar then... haven't used Freebsd for a couple of years now
trafshow might be availible | [17:02] |
phlux | yeah, it is
and it shows something like ip,2084 so i'm assuming 2084 is the port but i have no clue what it is being used for | [17:04] |
gluffis | yes
lsof might help linux got netstat -anp to show program | [17:05] |
phlux | d'oh
i'm dumb 2084 is my SSH port -_- | [17:08] |
gluffis | i don't remember correct parameters for lsof to list open sockets :D
haha :D that should show some traffic ;) | [17:08] |
phlux | i'm going to disable this tinyproxy and see if anything changes
i don't know how i'd be using 2MB in a matter of minutes by being connected to it, but we'll see | [17:09] |
gluffis | lots of background requests
.D | [17:09] |
phlux | k, i'm going to check it again in 5 minutes | [17:11] |

jlgaddis | phlux: if you're running a web proxy, you probably want to spend some extra time to ensure that you've got it locked down pretty well
other wise, don't be surprised when 1) arp sends you a huge bill for bandwidth overages and/or 2) the police show up at your door | [23:45] |
Mexicainvexed | why is that possible?
just curious | [23:48] |
jlgaddis | because if it's not properly secured anybody in the world could use it | [23:50] |
