WhoWhatWhen
up_the_ironsNotice for the beta VMs on kvr27: we will be shutting them down in probably a week or so. Testing was successful and the server was swiched to production. [01:01]
CaZeAnyone use WiMax? [01:03]
up_the_ironsjlgaddis: in your article (http://evilrouters.net/2011/01/30/bypassing-the-internet-kill-switch/), whose tower is that? :)
that's quite a clear day too
[01:10]
jlgaddisup_the_irons: nfi, image came from flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/retropc/2779717716/ [01:11]
up_the_ironsah
jlgaddis: i'm taking my ham exam(s) in a couple weeks
gonna knock that shit outta the park (hopefully :)
[01:12]
CaZeShould I build a WiMax tower? [01:15]
jlgaddisoh sweet.
my (former) step-dad, who watched me doing "radio stuff" as a kid (~20 yrs ago) finally got his license a year or so ago
i was thinking the other day of upgrading my license but i haven't been on the radio regularly in ~15 years ago. it's probably been two or three since i was even on the local repeater.
[01:19]
up_the_ironsjlgaddis: ah neat [01:21]
jlgaddiss/15 years ago/15 years/
hrm, actually, i need to check when my license expires. probably getting close to renewal time again.
[01:22]
up_the_ironsjlgaddis: yeah, i had not been on a repeater (GMRS) in quite a while either, but i've recently got back into the whole radio thing. a friend that got me into it recently got his ham license, so now i'm encouraged to beat him ;) (he got a Technician). I'm passing both the Technician and General practice exams on QRZ regularly, and am studying the Extra stuff every night... [01:23]
jlgaddisnice. just go take the damn exams already. :P
i wonder how long it takes to get your results/license nowadays. surely they do everything electronically and issue them much faster.
i think it took about 11 weeks for my first license to arrive.
[01:24]
dr_jklugh i need to study for a ham
i let my gmrs license die with every intention of getting a ham license and i haven't yet
[01:34]
up_the_ironsjlgaddis: i read that it takes only a few days after you pass. i got my gmrs license in like under 48 hours (no test though, just fill out an online form)
jlgaddis: heh, i would probably go take 'em now, but i scheduled a no-walk-in exam date for 11/17, so i'm sticking to it. there's one next weekend, but its a lot farther from my house.
dr_jkl: go do it.. it's easier than you think (esp. for Technician)
[01:35]
jlgaddiscool
i don't think you have to do morse code anymore either?
[01:41]
up_the_ironsnope, no CW [01:49]
jlgaddisshould be a piece of cake for you then
i can't imagine the test has changed much since i took it

.... (idle for 15mn)
mercutioup_the_irons: any update on the new router yet? [02:17]
up_the_ironsmercutio: just got the power installed for it last week, and will probably be installing it physically, this week; but cabling, configuring, etc... will take longer [02:23]
mercutioahh ok
so probably before xmas
but not by a lot :)
[02:23]

jlgaddisnew router? anything good? [03:03]
up_the_ironsCisco 6506-E with SUP720-3BXL and some line cards [03:03]
jlgaddisreplacing the 4507?
or supplementing?
[03:06]
up_the_ironssupplementing (the 4503)
in the end, if everything works as designed, i can sling vlans between the 4503 and 6506 as needed and traffic will flow normally. so, for example, if i need to take a line card out of the 4503, i can swing the vlans on that card to the 6506 during the maintenance.
or, more importantly, if the 4503 ever takes a shit, there will be another path for traffic to flow.
[03:08]
jlgaddiscan linux do failover between nic's?
e.g. if eth0 goes down, bring up eth1 and use it instead (with same ip, etc.)?
if so, you can have each physical host connected to both the 4503 and 6507 and do hspr/vrrp between them...
nevermind, i'm sure you already know this. usually i'm talking to people who don't know what they're doing. =)
[03:16]
up_the_ironsjlgaddis: you can do that type of failover with link bonding
jlgaddis: the way we're doing it is by simply having both interfaces belong to the same bridge. the gratuitous arp that cisco sends when the vlan interface comes up on the "new" router would clear arp caches and cause that NIC to then be used.
[03:20]
jlgaddisis it lacp or something else? or, more importantly, does linux expect that the nic's are connected to the same device? [03:22]
up_the_ironsjlgaddis: hsrp / vrrp isn't always an option b/c a lot of vlans only have /30's [03:22]
jlgaddisahhh, yeah, forgot about that [03:23]
up_the_ironsjlgaddis: linux does not expect the same device, nor does FreeBSD lagg or OpenBSD's trunk.
it's not lacp so that's why different devices can be used
you *can* put it in lacp mode, if you want though.. same with lagg and trunk, it's pretty well supported
(but then same switch is required)
[03:23]
jlgaddishowever you do it, i'll just be happy with the increased higher of reliability
(not that i'm complaining or anything)
[03:24]
up_the_ironsand i'll sleep better at night too :) [03:27]
jlgaddisheh, yeah i imagine
one of my biggest fears is that stuff will break when i'm asleep and my phone won't wake me up
i can imagine waking up after a 12-hour coma only to find that everything's been broken for 10 hours
[03:28]
up_the_ironsjlgaddis: LOL me too!
jlgaddis: but recently, I have set up PagerDuty, and that helps with that fear a LOT. practically eliminates it. PagerDuty calls my cell, home, etc... every 5 minutes, repeatedly, for like 36 hours ;)
if I don't wake up, my wife will throw the phone at me
problem solved
[03:35]
..... (idle for 23mn)
jlgaddisi've been debating signing up for them too [04:00]
up_the_ironsjlgaddis: so far, worth the money [04:01]
jlgaddiswe offer voip to our customers, so i had our phone guys hook me up with a DID and set up a cisco phone in my home office. i don't normally use it, but my co-workers have the number and it's listed at places like ARIN where other people might find me. and i have the ringer set to "make your ears bleed" level to ensure i hear it.
one of the guys at work called that number a week or so ago and even though i was in bed ~50 feet away, the damn thing woke me up and scared the shit out of me.
[04:02]
up_the_ironsjlgaddis: LOL effective phone :) [04:05]

In reality, I just don't have anything *that* critical
Most of my stuff only needs to be up and running during working hours... and those are the hours I'm already in the office. If something crashes overnight, it really can wait until I get in in the morning to fix it.
