you must be quite the unlucky person.  i've been online for ~20 years now and have yet to be on the receiving end of a denial of service attack.
to answer your question the best i can, though, i don't think there's anything special in place to mitigate a denial of service.  the exception would be some basic rate-limiting of traffic to 22/tcp (primarily to help prevent brute force attacks against ssh, i assume).
if you're doing something to cause your vps to be the victim of dos attacks, though, i think you might wake up one day to find your account cancelled.

jlgaddis: the RAM favor is easier than wget + dd an image :)  plus, you won't have any  kvm/qemu version issues

But the initial install didn't take very long.
Now, installing KDE was another story

Even then, KDE, OpenOffice, Chrome, and Thunderbird only took ~6 hours.
I started the install and went to sleep for the night
I remember FreeBSD taking days on KDE 3.5

The thing I hate about FreeBSD is the stupid config stuff.

How some packages use 'make config' during install.
I like to just run portupgrade -a and leave for the day.
phlux: you can make all that run in one go at the start

but I *always* come back to some config option

channel poll: random idea -- would it be useful to be able to reboot a vps via sms?  kinda like how you can check your account balance via sms with your bank...
you would obviously have to register your number with your account first (just like the bank)
I'd find it more useful to do so via email, but that's just me. I have sms disabled on my phone. If I want to sms someone, I find out what carrier they are on, and email their email to text gateway. ;-)
not for me... i reboot probably 1/2 times per year and thats generally from ssh/the console

1) sms is nothing more than a glorified expensive limited email system limited to mobile phone networks except for the sms to email gateways which further proves its equivalent
2) I hate that carriers use the fact that it is exclusive to the carriers as an excuse to charge a premum (someone calculated it would take 33 million to sms a hd video over sms on at&t for an example)
3) the part that pushed me over the edge was when I visited a client in chicago, was sent several sms messages, received none of them, missed some important info, and then the carrier had the nerve to charge me for them (that was back when plans didn't include some sms messaging for free as enticement)
sms people can sms me via sms -> email
I can sms people via email -> sms
why would I pay to send sms from my phone when email works perfectly well???
oh and I almost forgot
4) I fell for some stupid verification thing on a website and because I received the sms I got a $10/mo additional charge to some ripoff company .. at least the carrier blocked sms so this wouldn't happen again
why do you use sms?
mostly I hear the answer 'it is convenient' .. my sister actually told me 'my phone makes it easier to use sms than email' well duh, they have a vested interest in luring you into the false sense that an sms is an easy to use thing so they can charge you for it!
for me, it's 1-click on my android to see my account balance.  i don't have to login, or open a web browser.  i use the DirectSMS app.

thats the data plan. then the phone plan is more. between my wife and me the line charges and taxes and data plans add up to $165/mo.
if we change anything we're locked into 3 more years with tmobile
or if I port my phone # to another entity (my destination is voip) then my wife gets in a loophole to choose any plan w/out a 3 year contract as if she were continuing month to month
getting a $50/mo 5gb verizon mifi device plus my wifes options for new unlimited plans means I can use my n900 + verizon mifi for voip mobile calling for $50/mo and my wife's tmobile plan will be roughly $60/mo so $110/mo vs $165/mo .. sounds like a deal to me
plus having internet access in the boonies at my wifes parents house is a plus with verizon vs tmobile barely has reliable 2g edge data if I hold the phone just right in a particular window upstairs
if I want nagios to alert me I sent it via my mobile email address
though I got tired of false alerts via nagios and started writing my own alert system
in europe you never pay for receiving, which is logic no? you can't control what you are receiving
