up_the_irons: I did a CentOS 5.8 install and for package selection, I unselected everything, to try to get a minimal install. After booting the installed system, I had to deselect a *bunch* of services from startup, b/c they were not needed (e.g. xfs, no need for fonts on a server). Question: Had I selected "Server" in the package selection list, would it have installed *less* things? I just don't
understand why a bunch of X11 libs, GTK, and fonts were installed, if I did not select a desktop system
maybe jpalmer knows...
easymac: Because Linux is always a shit mess.
Probably comes with ImageMagick installed or something equally useless unless you're 99% of the world running shitty web servers.
Maybe PHP or Python stuff is installed for image processing?
up_the_irons: who knows...
i don't have this issue on debian / ubuntu. they are very clean minimal installs

toddf: I know from experience on openbsd its a very small set of packages that do not depend on x11 libs
RandalSchwartz: luckily with the right knobs in freebsd, you can avoid most x11 deps
echo "WITHOUT_X11=yes" >>/etc/make.conf
one of the first things I always do
***: sako has joined #arpnetworks
Webhostbudd: always
mike-burns: Unless I'm building a laptop, of course.
milki: nah, laptop doesnt need x11 either
jdoe: RandalSchwartz: shame the tags aren't named consistently, or documented anywhere that I found :(
RandalSchwartz: well, there are some guidelines in the portage docs
mike-burns: grep WITHOUT_ /usr/ports/*/*/Makefile
jdoe: haha.
RandalSchwartz: ... http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/contributing-ports/index.html
ahh - I mean http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/porters-handbook/
in particular - http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/porters-handbook/makefile-options.html
and see http://svn.freebsd.org/ports/head/KNOBS?view=markup
a good list of standard knobs
jdoe: up_the_irons: 52428800 bytes (52 MB) copied, 47.0498 s, 1.1 MB/s ... would it be possible for you to check if my vm is using virtio for disk? ... and if it is, wtf ;)

arenlor: Heh, my website responds faster than Comcast's does
up_the_irons: How many spare servers do you have, I may be recommending you to Comcast both for speed and stability.
milki: >.>
arenlor: They're a decent ISP, but their website goes down all the time.
andol: arenlor: Rather that than the other way around? :)
arenlor: Definitely of course, but still, annoying.
up_the_irons: arenlor: spare servers? like, without anyone on it?
or VPS slots?
or...
-: up_the_irons is confused
tooth: When you need to pull over and change your server out in a jiffy
arenlor: Doesn't matter, I just figure you'd need a few to support comcast ^_^
up_the_irons: arenlor: really depends how many VPS' they need
arenlor: if they want dedicated servers, i have 6 at the moment
pjs: up_the_irons what DC are you in again?
up_the_irons: pjs: CoreSite, 900 N. Alameda, Los Angeles
arenlor: It would seem this is over, and I haven't read any of it, but: http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/z1c9z/i_am_barack_obama_president_of_the_united_states/?limit=500
pjs: up_the_irons nice.. I'll probably be ordering another VPS or two soon. Not sure how I lived on EC2 and RackSpace all that time.. Switching to ARP has been the best decision since closing down my cage at Peer1 (7th and ... Hope I think)
up_the_irons: pjs: awesome, thanks for the kind words! Can I use it in a testimonial? ;)
-: up_the_irons drags a 3U chassis to the car...
milki: lol
pjs: up_the_irons of course. Want me to submit a legit testimonial?
up_the_irons I've only referred you like 5 new clients.. every time I'm promised a t-shirt, which never arrives.. and it's worse that I'm also in the LA area and we actually have friends in common... fucker :)
***: gcw has joined #arpnetworks
up_the_irons: pjs: a legit testimonial would be awesome, yet even what you already said is fine.
pjs: *I* don't even have a t-shirt
Lefty: up_the_irons: tshirts are obviously necessary
up_the_irons: pjs: since you're in town, go to the next LADevOps meetup so we can meet in person :)
Lefty: I'll take seven
up_the_irons: lol
Lefty: seriously, I'd even pay
milki: time for a arpnetworks tshirt competition promotion
-: up_the_irons nods
***: Ehtyar has quit IRC (Quit: Don't follow me)
up_the_irons: i don't have time to update our own website, let alone design a t-shirt (wish i could!)
data center time, bbl
milki: just put it up on twitter and someone will submit designs
pjs: LADevOps meeting here I come...
-: mercutio never got the thing of wearing branded tshirts
Lefty: shows our geek cred
makes us tech hipsters
mercutio: yeh but if you have real geek cred you don't need to wear a tshirt
it'd be appreciated to wear some kind of shirt though :)
***: gcw has quit IRC (Remote host closed the connection)
arenlor: Eh, I have an HE IPv6 shirt
mercutio: so my cellpohne is being mental - i look to see what other cellphones are out there, and it's still a jungle.
arenlor: most people don't even know who HE are ?
milki: mercutio: geek tshirts are free swag from conventions
!
mercutio: "secretly we are gay?"
that's what urban dictionary says
arenlor: mercutio: huh?
mercutio: 1. swag 1608 up, 470 down
"Secretly. We. Are. Gay."
just so you know what people mean when they tlk about their "swag"
arenlor: Nobody thinks that.
mercutio: google does
arenlor: My grandmother knows what swag is.
mercutio: hmm maybe it's not used here?
arenlor: Maybe
mercutio: oh is it like swagger?
abbreviated?
Lefty: I like free tshirts from conventions
they mean I don't have to shop for shirts as often
mercutio: so they make you feel confident and control wearing those shirts?
arenlor: mercutio: Swag is free stuff.
mercutio: oh
arenlor: Generally branded though.
So like a bag that says Nike that you get for free.
mercutio: i see
but people pay money for bags that say nike :)
Lefty: or the notebook + pen combos I'm always getting from Dell
mercutio: i had a free mp3 player from my dns provider
arenlor: Or a shirt that says ARPNetworks if you've been there for a few years.
mercutio: it was tacky
Lefty: or the stress ball that says F5
arenlor: mercutio: That's swag
Lefty: etc etc
mercutio: f5 induces stress
oh right
i call it "junk"
arenlor: Swag is often tacky.
mercutio: It's free though, hence not junk.
Lefty: ya, I'd say 60% of it should just immediately be discarded
mercutio: depends how cheap you are :)
actually i had this strange letter with a free usb hub frmo hp
Lefty: but often it's stuff like little flashlights or USB car chargers
mercutio: i think it was hp
it was multicoloured
and usb 1
but it was still handy for getting more ports
that said, this was like two yeras ago
and it was usb 1!
Lefty: stuff that's useful but I'd rarely make the effort to go buy normally
mercutio: meh, meece and keyboards work fine with usb1
mercutio: keyboard and mouse are ok on usb 1
Lefty: ^
mercutio: yeh but flash sticks don't
i just discovered the other day that my keyboard has a usb plug
arenlor: I don't need more shirts, but if someone is giving them out I'll probably take oe.
mercutio: hmm
i prob wouldn't
Lefty: my monitors usually have powered USB hubs built-in, thankfully
mercutio: but branded beer i'd drink
my monitor has built in hub too
Lefty: nothing USB3 yet though
mercutio: i don't know if it's powered
Lefty: most likely
mercutio: not finding much info
but one site says 4 ports
weird i can only see two
ZR24W also has a 2-port USB hub on the left side of the frame. Two USB inputs are found on the bottom as well.
hmm
oh the other two are by where the connectors plug in
i don't think it is powered
milki: a lot of my tshirts are free from conventions, infosessions, and whatnot
