sorressean: urm. how do you remove a vm from the control panel?
mhoran: Cancel the service?
sorressean: I'm trying. I clicked on the vm, there's nothing to cancel.
mhoran: Ah. That's done by e-mail. Send an e-mail to support@arpnetworks.com.
-: sorressean nods.
sorressean: thanks
mhoran: Sure thing!
sorressean: anyone know what is used to host the bsd systems? it's not xen is it?
mhoran: KVM.
-: sorressean nods.
sorressean: I was just curious. I'd like to experiment with bsd a bit.
mhoran: Awesome.
andol: sorressean: Same here :) Just had a FreeBSD VPS created, to have something a bit more longterm/real to play with than just a local virtual machine.
-: sorressean nods. I was kind of looking at dedicated servers. There are a lot of people that want to learn, thought it might be cool to jump into vm hosting. make some money for school.
sorressean: all dedicated servers are expensive as hell though.
andol: Hmm, seems like the vm hosting business is already rather well saturated, unless you can offer someting really extra, or combine it with other offerings.
-: sorressean nods. I figured I'd get a few people, make $40/m or so. just thought it'd be cool to make some cash.
sorressean shrugs. Probably something better left to the people with the resources.
andol: sorressean: More like hopefully cover your expenses, but learn lots and lots of cool stuf in the process.
sorressean: andol: I'd be cool with that too.
interserver has some nice dedicated servers, but 1.6 ghz processor is about the same speed as my netbook.
the other is $60 more.
andol: sorressean: On a more general level, managing a sytem with actual users is a whole other learning experience than just experimenting with a system only yourself rely on.
sorressean: andol: nods. I wouldn't mind it.
andol: would let me learn, anyway.
andol: ON the other hand, when you pay for a dedicated server you usually also pay for redudant network/power, etc.
-: sorressean nods.
sorressean: It would be cool to get into the vps/dedicated business. I could do the coding to build the panel and all that for sure, but I don't have much to offer over anyone else besides resources.
andol: sorressean: Well, if you have any friends/acquaintances/classmates interested in having their on virtual machines you might setup something for them, and make it worthwhile for them by offering a much more personal setup and support. Economy wise it might not scale, but it would allow you to get a feel for the concept.
sorressean: andol: hrm nods.
andol: sorressean: What school are you in by the way?
sorressean: andol: colorado mesa university
andol: it's nothing amazing, but it works to start.
andol: sorressean: Perhaps not, but uni/college is definetly a good place to find likeminded to learn together with.
sorressean: andol: nods. I've not found many people that know much about linux or anything else really here. couple of the profs are nuts.
andol: Might have been lucky myself, ending up a university with a rather strong *nix interest among the comp. sci students.
