hi RandalSchwartz hello, anyone who have ipv6 on the vps. are you able to do rdns on your ipv6 range? how can it be done? can it be done by setting up ns servers and have ns servers do rdns right? Mouse103: that is an option. you can also set ptr-records via the portal if you don't want to run your own ns servers ahh portal already have support for rdns for ipv6 right? yes ok cool you get your vps after ordering automatically right? or just have wait for admin to setup you right? iirc up_the_irons has to do something by hand oh ok On FreeBSD 8.1 I can't seem to find my /etc/pw.config. Anyone know where it is? pw.config? wrong filename probably but I got it right while searching. For use with the pw command man pw might have the filename in it. I've been there and it says something like that is the default place unless -C is specified. /etc/pw.conf is what it says, but I don't have one either. so I wonder how the command can work without that file somewhere maybe I should do a "find" for it. /leave # arpnetworks I need to know if they auto charge to your credit card on your billing for invoices or you just pay the invoice yourself manually right? Mouse_: My ARP VPS is set up to auto-bill from my credit card, which is what I want. I don't know what other options are available ahh ok, I do not want auto-bill and I prefer to pay invoices manually. Mouse_: you can't pay invoices manually, they are auto-billed HighJinx: 130c?! dang https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=202018096962390235287.0004c32ef50e09e541122&msa=0&ll=38.972489,-104.93145&spn=0.260242,0.41851 springs is ablaze! HighJinx: recommendations on thermal compound? artic silver 3 is the classic HighJinx: cool tnx HighJinx: how about 5? http://www.cwc-group.com/compound.html up_the_irons i guess thats better theres this new stuff too, sec for link 5 is a bigger number! It must be better! up_the_irons : http://indigo-xtreme.com/ :) HighJinx: ah cool tnx HighJinx: that stuff looks good, i'm gonna try some oh, looks like that stuff is best for extreme overclocking "If you operate your CPU at stock wattages and frequencies, Indigo Xtreme™ may not provide significant advantage, and a legacy solution may be adequate for your needs." -- http://indigo-xtreme.com/comparison.html maybe i should try to overclock the 3.4GHz ivy bridge i want to use it on... ;) up_the_irons : heres a graph of pretty much all the thermal pastes : http://www.frozencpu.com/images/awards/Skinneelabs%20TIMOverallTempa.jpg up_the_irons: i don't have everything spec'd out yet, but probably something like this: http://amzn.com/B004IXYCOA does randallschwartz come here anymore? fink: yea hi jpalmer i saw that randallschwartz had successfully resized his freebsd zfs partition here: http://irclogger.arpnetworks.com/irclogger_log/arpnetworks?date=2011-06-25,Sat bottom of the page i wanted to ask him how it's holding up i want to do the same ahh, I still have no experience with zfs, so.. Dunno the answer ;) wish he'd blog about it ;) up_the_irons: hi, i just emailed you. if you could help me out asap, that'd be awesome!! up_the_irons: emailed with correct info lol jpalmer: in case you're wondering, i got stuck on booting from the fixit dvd my system was 8.3, which has a later version of ifs (28) the dvd available from arpnetworks was 8.0; so of course, the utilities on the dvd can't work with zfs28 in retrospect, i should have asked for the latest dvd before starting HighJinx: AS 5 doesn't come in very good fink: i replied up_the_irons: got it, thanks np up_the_irons yea, past few years alot of makers been doin new tims HighJinx: think i'll try some Phobya HeGrease Extreme up_the_irons: slick, ive been wanting to get some of thier case fans. they are some of the best next to noctua HighJinx: ah nice crap…"all blocks unavailable" HighJinx: those Noctua fans are pretty sweet; been reading some reviews... they have the new noise eliminator ones too HighJinx: yeah i think this is one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608004 HighJinx: the reviews say they can't even hear it going yep i have 2x 98mm versions on my 771's up_the_irons : http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=productview&products_id=32&lng=en they are massive! HighJinx: holy crap!! yea and its not the big ones lol HighJinx: how do you even mount that to the cpu? seems like there is no room for a screwdriver you see the special half moons in the outside fins? oh yeah you install these arms to the hs then bolt it on like a normal hs they are slick you can pretty much mount them any direction you want ah ok nice HighJinx: who makes a good case w/ a low noise ps? up_the_irons what kind of case? HighJinx: like a mid tower, plain old desktop machine ive always liked silverstone some say lian-li but i hate them with a passion of course it always just comes down to the psu. you can get silent fanless ones liek the silverstone nightjar my silverstone decathlon 1kw psu is silent, w/ 1 huge 120mm fan HighJinx: so it's silent even with the fan? seasoic are supposed to have some of the quietest yea, im using less than half of what the psu can do most the time so its not heating up seasonic** ah cool http://s1247.photobucket.com/albums/gg622/palmerit/Temporary/ <-- new corals I got today. don't think most are going to make it :/ HighJinx: would you go with Dynatron 1U heatsink or Cooljag? niether, both are made by the same ppl and are super loud liek jets HighJinx: looking at the passive ones ahh then dynatron has some awesome full copper blocks HighJinx: ok cool it's awesome that frozencpu.com has a "Caffeine" category among all their computer parts up_the_irons they are killer on shipping tho. theres a clone company performance-pcs.com also which has the same stuff as frozencpu but sometimes cheaper. wonder if there's anything similar that wouldn't be cross-border shipping jdoe to where? HighJinx: yeah, i noticed the shipping was bad, so i ordered a few more things... ;) i don't wanna pay $4 to ship an $8 item up_the_irons yea i have the same mentality w/ places like that. might as well make it worth it. HighJinx: I had the best experience with CWC Group though.. i ordered something at 3pm, got it 8am the next day. i swear that is faster than newegg HighJinx: yep if you order newegg before noon you can get it same day ;) HighJinx: that has not worked for me in practice though ;) http://www.unix.com/man-page/FreeBSD/5/pw.conf up_the_irons yea its the luck of the draw and the warehouse you get up_the_irons : i just picked up one of these : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834131249 basically last gen guts of a macbook air Does a new FreeBSD 9 VPS have this file on board? HigJinx that's quite a deal. What do you run on it? HighJinx I have never seen xterm on the MacBook air with normal size fonts. At the mac store, they can't show normal size. ifthen, just windows 7 home premium 64bit, nothing special just a daily websurfin machine HighJinx: nice! I wish I could find the right laptop for xterm to access arp Asked Lenovo online about FreeBSD support and they referred me to support. Sales didn t want to be specific. osx is based on FreeBSD I would love to go all FreeBSD, HighJinx hehe UTI do you know offhand if the 9 distro has pw.conf the file as part of basic setup? Would be grateful if someone here with FreeBSD 9 installed and running here at arpnetworks would check for the presence of the file /etc.pw.conf o.O wouldnt some #freebsd channel be better? that should be /etc/pw.conf milki why? more people might be running fbsd 9 there but it is this specific install I am interested in. o.O i thought the only image provided by arpnetworks was fbsd 8 ya, 7.2,8.2 milki I believe 9 is available. otherwise, install it yourself if you install it yourself, then any generic fbsd 9 would work for you... I'm looking for the easy way ifthen: milki : freebsd 9 is not available as a "hands free" install, only by ISO ya, so i dont understand why ifthen is asking here -.- up_the_irons thanks for clarity. Is it normal to have a missing /etc/pw.conf file on the FreeBSD 8.1 and 8.2 versions arp supplies? pw.conf? I don't have one of those. ifthen: what specifically are you trying to do? you've been asking about this pw.conf file for.. a while I want to use pw on the next upgrade I set up and avoid the disaster of the last setup. I can't use pw if it's broken. pw works for me. how is pw broken? strange it works with a missin file what is it doing that it shouldn't be, or not doing that it should? That was months ago and I don't remember. So why really is it not there? Man says it is normal to be there. what version of fbsd are you using? 8.1 http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/etc/?only_with_tag=RELENG_8_1_0_RELEASE there is no default pw.conf, in 8.1 ok at last I get it. when is it default? so, with that in mind. how is pw broken? what is it doing that it shouldn't? or what is it not doing that it should? what *specifically* is the problem you are trying to resolve? "While most of the contents of the configuration file may be overridden via command-line options, it may be more convenient to keep standard information in a configuration file. I just want to make sure that i have a working pw file for my next upgrade so pw works flawlessly. pw.conf ok, so again.. what is it not doing, or doing that makes you think it's broken? so after upgrading my zfspools and expanding to use the entire disk, it appears that gparts boot code command fuxxored my /boot/loader.conf Events I have forgotten. ok, so you currently have *no* issues with pw? which led to the error: "ZFS: i/o error - all block copies unavailable" So far as I can tell, from that repo, there has neve rbeen a pw.conf in base. right jpalmer and I don't want any when i upgrade and thanks for your info unfortunately, trying to echo the proper settings into loader.conf from the fixit command line gave me a corrupted file, so i had to entire everything by hand over vnc at the boot prompt which was fun ifthen: so you are trying to resolve a problem that doesn't exist? oh yea, and gpart also erased my zfs cache file it's called foresight in my book. well, I think you have your answer regardless. there is no pw.conf by default. if you want one for whatever reason (that you've yet to explain) feel free to make one fink: are you up and running now? jpalmer: to some degree, cherokee has decided to conk out, but at least the base system with openvpn is running goddamn that took forever hmm, probably has something to do with "Could not create semaphore: No space left on device" which makes sense, because the kern.ipc settings were in my loader.conf what fun cya jpalmer
