nesteano fucking clue why I got that kline [04:23]
...................................... (idle for 3h6mn)
up_the_ironsjpalmer: no mirror, sorry. been meaning to set up some of those though
mbset: we do not filter port 25
weird, even mike-burns got K-Lined, wth
[07:29]
mike-burnsI'm a nice guy, I swear! [07:31]
...... (idle for 25mn)
jpalmerup_the_irons: no reason to be sorry. I figured even if you had a mirror it'd be for your common OS's, the BSD's. not so much centos ;)
jpalmer suspects the kline was an accident. they probably used a script that doesn't take ipv6 into consideration when creating the mask. so it likely hit 2607:f2f8:* or something
or worse, 2607:*
[07:56]
up_the_ironsjpalmer: i'll mirror everything once i figure out how to set it up ;) BSD's or not... Last time I tried, i think with FreeBSD, the docs were non-existent... [07:59]
jpalmerhttp://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/hubs/mirror-howto.html
http://www.centos.org/modules/tinycontent/index.php?id=22
[08:00]
up_the_ironsomg
i must have been blind or drunk b4...
[08:01]
jpalmerup_the_irons: I wouldn't consider this urgent, or even "anything above low priority" especially since you let people install their own. not sur how much bandwidth it'd save you. it's more helpful if you can prepackage the OS, where it's pointing directly at the mirror.
(so maybe your default installs, before people re-provision)
I'd say, before you do anything.. try to determine how many people have your default installs, vs. how many custom install :)
[08:02]
up_the_ironsthe majority have default
it's already a low priority issue, been on the TODO for a very long time... ;)
[08:03]
jpalmeroh? wow. I wouldn't have expected that to be honest. [08:03]
up_the_ironsbut i've always thought it would be cool to run mirrors
even public ones
[08:04]
jpalmerwell, I know centos in particular is always looking for an ipv6 capable mirror. they are trying to v6 the entire infra now. [08:04]
mike-burnsGood publicity. [08:04]
jpalmerthey just upgraded mirrorlist.centos.org to v6. they are working on authoratative NS's now too.
not sure if they'd be up for you offering to slave their zones, since you run v6 enabled NS's.. but you could always offer ;)
[08:05]
up_the_ironsah, very cool [08:07]
jpalmerof course, I don't know how much "centos" publicity you want, since that isn't a primary focus of your business services [08:07]
up_the_ironsas far as publicity is concern, we're a data center services company (VPS, colo, dedicated, transit, dare I say "cloud" soon), so even CentOS fits the bill [08:08]
jpalmerif you are interested in slaving zones for them talk to avij in #centos-devel though. he's their resident ipv6 guru.. and involved in a lot of the infra stuff for ipv6 [08:08]
up_the_ironsok cool [08:08]
jpalmerright now, I know NS's are a concern. none of their current ones have native v6, and they don't want to do it over tunnels. [08:09]
up_the_ironsright [08:10]
mike-burnsCloud? [08:10]
jpalmerto the cloud! [08:10]
up_the_ironsi'm going to try ubuntu 12.04 w/ openstack on some new dedicated servers. see how it all works. VPS is good for a "permanent home", but for those two want to spin up 5 instances of <something> for 5 hours, and then kill 'em, they need cloud... [08:11]
jpalmerup_the_irons: I think avij is active at night in the US zones. [08:12]
up_the_ironsjpalmer: roger
i will idle in the channel
[08:12]
mike-burnsI'm consistently being asked to recommend cloud services, so it will be nice to suggest Arp now. Well, soon. [08:12]
jpalmerlet me know how it goes. I don't think the NS's are one of their priorities atm, because thy don't expect many "ipv6 only hosts, who also use ipv6 only NS's" at this point. but I know it's on their hitlist.
jpalmer goes for a haircut
[08:13]
up_the_ironsjpalmer: roger, will do
mike-burns: thanks!
[08:14]
mike-burnsup_the_irons: I met an OpenStack contributor and a cloud expert (he literally wrote the book on it), yesterday. I can put you in touch when you need advice, etc.
They're in Amsterdam. By the way, I no longer live in the US.
[08:16]
up_the_ironsmike-burns: you live in Amsterdam?! :)
man, everyone is leaving the US...
[08:17]
mike-burnsI'm actually homeless, but this week I live in Amsterdam! [08:17]
up_the_ironsI have a friend in India, one in Dubai, and now... Amsterdam
LOL
mike-burns: nice
[08:17]
mike-burnsNext week: Oslo; then, Paris; then, um. I need to figure that out. [08:17]
up_the_ironsvery cool [08:17]
mike-burnsEventually I will be a Swedish resident. Hopefully by September. [08:18]
up_the_ironsnice [08:18]
..... (idle for 24mn)
wwup_the_irons: ever thought of adding some european footprint to your operation? [08:42]
up_the_ironsww: all the time, but there's a large gap between "thinking" and "doing" ;)
ww: I need to grow Los Angeles more before I can emulate what I have here into another location
[08:56]
mike-burnsI learned the other day that an EU Web site legally cannot have its database outside of the EU.
"you must not export your client data outside of the EU without specific agreement and knowledge of each customer"
[09:03]
wwmike-burns: i wonder how that squares with the uk's ideas of outsourcing "identity management" to google/facebook...
(just a policy rumour, nothing concrete yet)
[09:04]
mike-burnsI'm sure this is a very ignored law. [09:05]
wwthough "spcicific agreement" might mean "clicked 'I Accept'" [09:05]
up_the_irons: it would be nice to have a clueful isp like arp over here
almost all of them seem to have gotten wiped out in the post .com consolidation
[09:14]
up_the_ironsww: where are you located exactly? [09:15]
wwEdinburgh [09:15]
up_the_ironscool
i need to do more research on EU data center / colocation providers. Don't have a clue where I would put the gear. Had an EU customer in here that ran a data center, wondering where he went...
gotta run, bbl
