qbit_ | til you guys do colo
bawesome what would it cost to get a 1u dell sc 1425 colo'd ? | [12:59] |
jpalmer | jpalmer is upgrading a fbsd vps for someone. and DAMN is it slow. I just told them about ARP :P | [13:13] |
*** | Zetas has joined #arpnetworks | [13:13] |
qbit_ | oh hai Zetas | [13:14] |
Zetas | hellos
so kyl gave me this guide to upgrade: http://cvs.openbsd.org/faq/upgrade51.html#x-kbd-cfg but that makes baby jesus cry is there an easier way? like apt-get distupgrade lol | [13:14] |
qbit_ | Zetas: that script i linkered you earlier does exactly that stuff
would take a quick mod to make it work with non-snap based stuff | [13:15] |
Zetas | you linked a script? i didn't see that | [13:15] |
qbit_ | https://github.com/qbit/dotfiles/blob/master/bin/update_snap
actually - it wouldn't even take a mod just remove line 3 oh wait lol nm remvoe line 3 and line 19 | [13:15] |
Zetas | Zetas gives qbit_ another minute to look it over
lol | [13:17] |
qbit_ | and set SNAP_PATH=ftp://ftp.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/5.1/<arch>
or just ftp ftp.openbsd.org; cd /pub/OpenBSD/5.1/arch mget * and then paste that "Save a copy of reboot(8), install new userland applications." bit just don't forget to config -e -f /bsd | [13:17] |
Zetas | ok its running
standby for re-install from image lol | [13:21] |
qbit_ | ha
:P when it reboots.. make sure you "sysmerge -s etc51.tgz" and "cd /dev; sh MAKEDEV all" ^ do the makedev first | [13:21] |
Zetas | k | [13:22] |
qbit_ | also - mybad
pass 5.1 to that script ./update_snap 5.1 | [13:23] |
Zetas | oh god | [13:23] |
qbit_ | lal
ABORTABORT otherwise it will just upgrade you to the latest 4.7 :P | [13:24] |
Zetas | # ./update_snap 5.1
./update_snap[13]: 5.1X: unexpected `.' ftp://ftp.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/5.1/amd64/ ^C | [13:25] |
qbit_ | heh
ewps that -eq should probably be == | [13:26] |
Zetas | heh, yea, lets try that
there we go so far so good | [13:29] |
qbit_ | wew | [13:35] |
up_the_irons | jpalmer: :)

up_the_irons | lol
qbit_: that's typical not what it consumes in practice. any idea what the real usage would be? do u have a watt meter? :) what kinda proc's does it have? | [13:52] |
qbit_ | dual xeon 2.8ghz
i don't know the wattage irl i will find out tho :D | [13:54] |
up_the_irons | those xeon's are hungry mothers | [13:54] |
qbit_ | k
i will get some actual numbers with high cpu usage | [13:54] |
up_the_irons | i imagine 2.1 amps
tell me if i'm right once u know :) | [13:55] |
qbit_ | k
assuming 2.1 amps - what would the cost be/ | [13:55] |
up_the_irons | up_the_irons calculates
qbit_: how many ips needed? (it can share the vlan with your vps, if this is going under the same account) | [13:55] |
qbit_ | woo
one ip | [13:56] |
up_the_irons | k
that would be 250W of power (2.1A), so the MRC would be $150 / mo. qbit_: ^ | [13:56] |
qbit_ | k
kew thanks | [13:59] |
up_the_irons | np | [13:59] |
Zetas | up_the_irons: can you give a price on a per-ip charge for colo? | [13:59] |
up_the_irons | Zetas: per-ip charge? | [13:59] |
Zetas | the cost per additional ip address
ipv4 | [13:59] |
up_the_irons | Zetas: we typically do $1 per IP for small blocks for our VPS platform (/29's and /28's), but for larger blocks we need to talk. It wouldn't be more than $2 per IP. | [14:00] |
Zetas | ok, $2/ip/month is what i've paid in the past
thats too expensive for my needs | [14:00] |
up_the_irons | Zetas: yeah, it's on par
Zetas: how many IPs do you need? | [14:01] |
Zetas | as many as possible i suppose, it would be for a vps provider (if you even allowed such a thing) some places get pissy about it which is fine.
in the past i've maintained blocks of 80 or more but to hit th $5/month pricepoint its kinda hard to get that when you're paying $2 up front for the IP | [14:02] |
up_the_irons | Zetas: definitely
Zetas: with IPv4 runout under way, it's not gonna get better either ;) | [14:03] |
Zetas | yea i know lol, i flirted with the idea of ipv6-only vps's but i don't know if there is any market for that, i assume not, at least not now. | [14:04] |
up_the_irons | Zetas: yeah, not yet
my whole network does 1.5 Mbps of IPv6 on the 95th, so not much traffic | [14:04] |
Zetas | years ago i was colo'd in a DC in atlanta, they used to hand out a /27 to every new customer off the bat and additional /27's were not a problem either lol.
the good ol' days | [14:05] |
up_the_irons | Zetas: absolutely... i got 16 /24's from a provider called Aleron once...
they didn't even blink | [14:05] |
Zetas | haha nice | [14:06] |
qbit_ | Zetas: that upgrade work? | [14:06] |
Zetas | i see new blocks coming on the market though. One old lady somehow managed to get her hands on a /8 and was auctioning it off
i think it sold for millions qbit_: still downloading | [14:06] |
up_the_irons | Zetas: omg, *that* makes baby jesus cry | [14:06] |
Zetas | up_the_irons: doesn't it though.. lol. Another one of those "if only.." | [14:07] |
up_the_irons | Zetas: you can try Syminet (http://syminet.com) for colo and cheaper IPs (maybe). They are in the same data center as me and use our network (and our IPs, heh). Maybe they'll bundle something for ya. | [14:08] |
Zetas | up_the_irons: thanks for the link. My VPS service already folded earlier in the year but i always hold out hope for it to come back some day. | [14:08] |
up_the_irons | Zetas: yeah, it's never too late :)
Zetas: what was your offering like? | [14:09] |
Zetas | up_the_irons: i just signed up for one of your 512 bsd slices yesterday, im working on it today, so far im impressed with your setup. It's simple, elegant, and most importantly, functional. lol | [14:10] |
up_the_irons | Zetas: glad you like it :) | [14:10] |
Zetas | up_the_irons: it was xen based. I offered every flavor of linux under the sun. Automated restores, customer controlled kernels, restore partitions in the boot process, SSH console, etc. | [14:11] |
up_the_irons | Zetas: nice | [14:11] |
Zetas | i didn't get into hvm/qemu for many reasons, least of which was demand. Hardly anyone wants bsd/windows vps's.
qbit_: I put etc.tgz and xetc.tgz in ~/ Don't forget to sysmerge when done! thats what the script said when it finished just now | [14:12] |
qbit_ | wew
dun forget to do it :D also MAKEDEV | [14:13] |
up_the_irons | Zetas: right, but problem with a xen / linux offering is there are, I imagine, over 1000+ hosts doing that. lots of competition make it very hard to get into the market | [14:14] |
Zetas | up_the_irons: true, though i had a few things no one else did. My ssh control panel was pretty advanced, as were my restore capabilities. You could, at a glance, reboot and drop into a live linux distro to repair your system, reinstall your os or any other os, take snapshots and restore backups all from the ssh console.
thats kinda what i was banking on | [14:17] |

Zetas | up_the_irons: it would have. Never got that far. I had to close up shop about a month before launch. I couldn't afford to keep it running since i was leasing the hardware.
qbit_: something looks wrong: # tar -C / -xzphf xserv51.tgz tar: End of archive volume 1 reached tar: Sorry, unable to determine archive format. | [14:21] |
