Hi, is there an IP to check latency to? I want to check latency to VPS servers from India. Oh hey I used my VPS when I was in India! This FAQ entry has address of an LA server: http://support.arpnetworks.com/kb/main/ip-address-for-ping-tests ... is this what I should be using? Yup. mhoran: how was your experience? okay, I got avg 300ms. from Delhi, India. It was fine. I think faster than my connection back to our NYC office. I IRC and send email from my VPS, so I use it interactively. Was a bit choppy, but not completely unbearable. does ARP have any other data centers other than this LA one? i.e. any chances of a better latency than 300ms? Just LA at this time. apart from other servers outside India, our Indian servers give us 30-40 ms. Want to make sure the 'backup server' that we use should have close latency to that. okay, got it. Makes sense. There may be more optimal routing that up_the_irons could look into. You may want to send an email to support@arpnetworks.com. Or maybe sales@ since you're a prospective customer. got it. Sending to sales@ just to see what can be done (though I have doubts how low optimal routing can bring 300ms down to something else). sent. (thanks) 300ms, dang must be going to the moon and back Yeah, routing in India is horrible. There are two ISPs exiting the country.I think my round trip was like, to London, and then to the East coast, then to LA. LOL yeah, to be an ISP an India is way f'in hard. You have to post like a $1M bond not small business friendly http://pastie.org/private/u0dnfpk6gjllflqbrmcya offtopic, if u don't have adblocker and have flash, you should be able to see my latest banner ad skillz: http://www.sharesnack.com/57569A86AED/bzkmyhph Ha, awesome! bannersnack.com +1 i gotta say, that's probably the best web-based banner builder ever... mhoran: thanks for the traceroute. man, terrible it slingshots around EU Yeah, awful. I was surprised, if there were a deep cable from India (or Japan or whatever) to West coast that'd make a lot of sense. But I couldn't find a route that way. eah *yeah That trace is from a backbone provider, too. We have two or three uplinks from the major carries because the local carriers are even worse. And the line still goes down two to three times a day. As well as the power. LOL Yeah ... that was a crazy experience. You'll just be sitting there, and bam, no power. Welcome to Earth When you go outside though, you understand why -- the power infrastructure is so antiquated. And you'll see arcs between anything metal, it's actually kind of scary. or i should say "Welcome to Earth" -- quiz: who said It?! :) Haha yeah, i saw some pics of cabling in India.... it's... LOL scary in this context, not Will Smith There's also this: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/64252260/IMG_20110828_143054.jpg "Welcome to Earth" -- Kurt Russel, Escape from LA, after they EMP'd the entire planet and nothing electronic survived :) Ha, awesome. LOL, nice I ... don't know if I've seen Escape from LA. But I must have ... it was bitchen, at least when i was like 14... That's the first time I've ever disabled ABP to see an ad lol. LOL Same. DDevine: i've been having to disable ABP to do all this work. even in Google Adwords, I can't click on my own ads! the ad preview, that is Ha, yeah, I was debugging some ads at work the other day, telling the designer that his damn ad wasn't showing up. Then, I realized I had ABP on. haha yeah i've realized since that I was missing 30% of all websites... facebook without ABP is like a whole new site Oh, I bet. lol flash ads http://i.imgur.com/6vKEz.jpg
