LT: you do realise that if you do then something is bound to break the minute you leave the building
up_the_irons: yeah
it's true
LT: good out of band access is definitely worth its weight in gold
which reminds me, need to order some more opengear console servers
up_the_irons: yes, of course. I have OOB up the butt, but this maintenance required physical access to b/c I actually had to replace a drive and I ran out of spares at the data center
but i have 28 new drives on my desk at home... ;)
LT: mm always a bit of a dilema, if you store the spares with the equipment then they anything that physically damages the live kit is going to damage the spares - but store it too far away and you have other problems
up_the_irons: right

jdoe: I've got ~552 days on a couple of machines here, but it mostly relies on them being not-public-facing, and my coworkers having the intelligence and malicious intent of a pile of stunned puppies :P

battle tested by our sysadmins
kraigu: haha, patching with a beer in hand. a grad student here used to get wasted, then do sysadminly stuff. only he didn't take notes, so he'd never remember how he fixed any given problem, assuming he fixed one vs making plenty.
once he decided to see if he could make two users with uid 0. he called the new user test, and gave it the password test, on a public-facing machine with ssh open.
lasted about 20 minutes.
-: jdoe coughs.
jdoe tugs nervously at collar.
kraigu: I sent my boss documentation revisions once, from the bar. then forgot I'd done it. :( I didn't tell him it had been from the bar til after he said they were good though.
tooth: hah.
I learned my lesson with that. Do not make public facing FTP accounts with test/test
milki: dont make public facing test accounts unless the system is also for testing

much time later I discovered I was someone's pub ftp box.
remmeber back in the day looking for warez on various "pub ftps" ?
I had become one. D:
milki: lol
tooth: turns out it wasn't anything I wanted, else I would have let them finish
kraigu: milki: at the time, there was no such thing as non-public facing
for reasons which are stupid when you say them out loud, so I won't, but suffice it to say simplicity in the network at all costs does not mesh well with a /16

eggsby: up_the_irons: could I bug you about a support ticket? :D
or is there anyway I can reinstall the OS on my VPS myself?
toddf: eggsby: you can do so with vnc console and hitting the magic key (I forget, f12 maybe) right after a hard reboot (or soft reboot if you still have access) and boot off the iso image attached to your vm.
eggsby: also note you can request your own custom iso or whatever, just provide the url in a support ticket
eggsby: cool, thanks toddf, i'll try that out
toddf: eggsby: depending on your os, if its OpenBSD, just use bsd.rd to re-install over serial console, tis what I'd do if I had that need ;-)
aka I did that when I first got my vps, since I like more partitions than / and swap ;-)
eggsby: I made a retarded move when upgrading my distro, skipped versions and broke all the core libs
alas, ports are blocked at the office, c'est la vie

port 6114
eggsby: bad first day for me w/ arpnetworks, was my fault at least :(
CaZe: I only use vnc when I mess up badly enough that my bootloader gets wiped.
eggsby: ya, I messed up my distro pretty bad
was debian, tried to migrate from lenny to wheezy (skipping squeeze)
CaZe: Can you still get on the serial console?
eggsby: ya
nvm CaZe, console is down :(
CaZe: Did you try to open it?
eggsby: ya, I'm in now :p
where can I find my nameserver?
CaZe: http://support.arpnetworks.com/kb/main/dns-servers
eggsby: thank you CaZe
it's installing now :)
this vnc feature is pretty nice, do many VPS providers do this?
