[11:16] in general? [11:16] or recently? [11:16] within the last 2-3 days, i guess [11:17] upgraded kernel and rebooted a few days ago, just tried to hit the console and just get a blank screen [11:17] worked fine before upgrade/reboot, but hadn't tried it afterwards until now [11:17] odd. [11:17] i'm sure it's just my vps, but want to confirm... not sure what would cause it to b0rk. [11:17] I *have* noticed a need to stop/start the ssh tunnel after a reboot though [11:17] for some reason [11:17] didn't used to need that [11:18] back a year ago. :) [11:18] i've tried over ssh and not, same thing either way [11:18] I don't background my tunnel [11:18] ssh -vN [11:18] not -f something :) [11:19] well the connection gets established, the console is usually blanked, just hit enter to get the screen to appear, but that's not working now [11:19] weird [11:19] and i'm in san jose and can't ssh in from $home [11:20] I have no idea what that last statement means [11:20] I hope I wasn't expected to understand it [11:20] i have ssh filtered except from a few ip addresses [11:21] none of those boxes are within ~2500 miles of me right now =) [11:21] how would that affect your console? [11:21] your filtering is within your VM, right? [11:21] or did you set up something special with ARP? [11:21] it wouldn't, but i have no other way to get into the vps [11:21] iptables in the vps [11:21] right... so you should still be able to ssh-tunnel the vnc [11:22] right [11:22] with a b0rked console, though, i can't get in at all [11:22] have you tried a reboot? [11:22] and watch it during reboot? [11:23] the low-level stuff should at least scribble on the console [11:23] before your OS takes over [11:23] the "press F12 to select boot device" stuff [11:27] no, i try not to use rebooting as a troubleshooting technique =) [11:30] depends on what you need, I guess [11:31] if the box is up and running, no biggy [11:31] if it's broken, needs fixing. :) [11:31] as for sshd, I moved it from 22 to 443, and never ever see ssh probes [11:31] no need for ip range reduction [11:32] *** Tadaka has quit IRC (Quit: leaving) [11:36] yeah, i use alternate port numbers or two-factor security at times [11:37] all my sites are working so it's not a huge issue, just wanted to ssh in and check something [11:43] can you tunnel through home? :) [11:43] I have "back to my mac" for that, for example. I am thinking of copying those files to a /user/ssh/ directory. I have already put a few variable instantiation commands in one and it hasn't wrecked anything. I just wonder how a non-apple OS can find ssh_config and sshd_config.
