***: LT has joined #arpnetworks gamarco: sorressean: no need for the ticket to change the cd. you can do it yourself by downloading a bsd.rd for 4.9, dropping it in /, and booting that
you can do a vanilla bsd.rd and connect to your console over vnc or serial (using the arp console server), or use something like yaifo ***: heavysixer has joined #arpnetworks
ChanServ sets mode: +o heavysixer -: jpalmer would still ask for the media to be mounted. That way, he can reinstall numerous times even if the system won't boot. (sine he mentioned he's using the VPS to learn) sorressean: I'm not exactly sure how that'd work out, but I can't use VNC. ***: boba has quit IRC (Quit: boba)
boba has joined #arpnetworks sorressean: If I could do it myself though, I'd love to figure it out. There's just VNC that's a minor issue. :| gamarco: how about over serial console? jpalmer: sorressean: you said you are blind, right? sorressean: jpalmer: yeah.
serial console could work. I'll have to figure this out, not something I've had a lot of experience with. gamarco: in that case, you can still drop the 4.9 bsd.rd in /, boot to that through the arp console server, and have at it
or, build a yaifo installer and then not have to mess with the serial console part sorressean: me nods. and then I'd just do the install like normal?
ur. /me* gamarco: yup sorressean: That'd be cool, then I could play with freebsd too.
awesome. thanks gamarco: yaifo allows you to ssh in to the installer, but you have to build it -: sorressean nods. sorressean: Well, depending on the accessibility of the console, I might have to go that route. gamarco: you'll have to use ssh public keys either way
you can upload your public key to arp for the serial console
they have a faq for how to do it. it's pretty easy
then you just ssh to the console server, a few keystrokes attach you to your vps's serial console, and off you go sorressean: sweet.
public keys aren't a problem. That's kind of how Lish works on Linode ***: HighJinx has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 240 seconds) sorressean: ok. so I'm confused. vnc wants me to hit f12 at the bios screen to boot from cd, but I can't boot from cd. I'm not sure how to put in the bsd ramdisk so that I can boot to it, then ssh to the console. ***: heavysixer has quit IRC (Remote host closed the connection)

ChanServ sets mode: +o heavysixer sorressean: I guess the ssh makes sense, but it's booting to the rd that's a problem. once the ramdisk is loaded I could just reformat since it'll be stored in ram, right? but how do I make the portal boot to that rd? DaCa: sorressean: type bsd.rd at the boot> prompt ***: LT has quit IRC (Quit: Leaving) sorressean: damnit. I keep forgetting curl dumps to stdout. :p
I'm sorry for all the questions. >.> I'm in the console. I don't see a boot> prompt. I've looked at the console, as well as just issued a b to hopefully get to the boot> prompt. I sshed in.
The knowledge base only references booting with vnc. I guess there's not a way to do this in the console? DaCa: check if you have the following in /etc/boot.conf
stty com0 9600
set tty com0
when you reboot, you should have a boot> prompt for a couple of seconds sorressean: DaCa: at that point the OS has already been loaded and I can't boot the ramdisk can I ? I'll do that, I'm just kind of lost. :p -: sorressean nods sorressean: I'll set the reader to the fastest speed to catch it. DaCa: you can increase the timeout in /etc/boot.conf too, for example: set timeout 10
by default it loads the bsd kernel, you want to tell it to boot bsd.rd instead before the bootloader does so sorressean: I don't appear to have a boot.conf. that could be it. thanks DaCa: yes, you need the above two lines to set the bootloader to talk to the serial console, otherwise it will go to vga console (which you see with vnc) -: sorressean nods. thanks again. appreciated. I'm kind of out of my depth with BSD. Hopefully once I get upgraded to 4.9 I can start figuring more stuff out. ***: Tadaka has joined #arpnetworks

how do I figure out my gateway? I'm just doing a fresh install, thought i'td be easier.
I've got the interface set up for my ipv4 and IPV6 address, but I need a gateway.
ah. I think it's in the portal ***: HighJinx has joined #arpnetworks
