you rock, Garry
thanks for all the support replies

ifthen: Or is there anything else that will run on this white Macbook?
OSX 10.5.8
mattx86: ifthen: try TigerVNC: http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/tigervnc/index.php?title=Main_Page#Downloads
ifthen: It was connectint me to the QEMU screen at kvr... and just stopped doing that.
mattx86: seems alright on linux
ifthen: matt I will check it out.
Does TigerVNC have a place to put a login name, even though it is not needed at ARP?
mattx86: ifthen: I don't believe VNC uses a login name; only a password. or at least that's how it seems to be with TigerVNC
ifthen: same with cotvnc but the login screen keeps wanting one or won't take the pw from the arp site
wallshot: vnc does only use a password
ifthen: i could never log in
wallshot: but i suppose there are enough forks of it now that someone may have rolled some username support into one
ifthen: wallshot do you get asked for a username when you connect?
wallshot: can't recall ever being asked for a username on vnc
after i connect, when i'm staring at my console, i see my freebsd login asking for a username ;)
ifthen: well I've tried my freebsd username and it's not working iirc
next time i am able to connect will try it again.
mattx86: usually I just specify the IP and port/display number on the command line, and once it connects, pops up a password dialog, and when entered, I see the console of my VPS or what not
ifthen: I have never seen that console. It's my grail.
mattx86: and from there, I proceed to enter my username/password that's on the VPS, as if it were a standard box that I was physically sitting in front of
wallshot: it should have nothing to do with your freebsd username, as the vnc server is not tied to your system (except that it shows you your system once you connect)
should be nothing you can do on your vps that would affect the vnc connection
except possibly shut it down, that might cause vnc to crap when there's no console to display
ifthen: I see only QEMU interface.
When I am able to even connect.
mattx86: ifthen: hm.. so you see the QEMU BIOS output, but it's not booting the OS?
ifthen: It tells me it is freebsd and asks for a username and pw
I expect a control panel or something but i've never seen it
mattx86: ahh
so it seems you're getting your VPS's console
ifthen: well that's what I'm after...
out of band thing first option
I have got access with SSH working
But i'd like to see the panel so i can reboot and get a new password
mattx86: ifthen: ah, for that, have you been to: https://portal.arpnetworks.com
ifthen: or superuser status back
***: Tadaka has joined #arpnetworks
jlgaddis: boot into single user mode from the console
mattx86: I don't think you can change the password they give you on the portal site and via the out of band management (or can you?), but yeah, you can certainly change your root password, etc
jlgaddis: maybe i misunderstood what ifthen is trying to do (since i just walked in)... i'll go back to shutting up. =)
ifthen: matt i think i am referring to to the url u just posted.
mattx86: well, as far as the portal site and out-of-band management passwords go, if you can't change them via the portal, I'd guess support could change it for you
wallshot: that would almost certainly be considred a bug, if you can't change the password
but i don't see where it would be available either
yep there it is: https://portal.arpnetworks.com/accounts/589/edit
mattx86: last I checked (portal at least), you couldn't(?)
wallshot: okay
don't go edit my account
go edit yours
mattx86: ah lol
wallshot: but you get the point
mattx86: there's that, but can you change the OOB password?
wallshot: "Edit Profile" in the main menu
jlgaddis: you can change your portal password
i don't think you can change the password for the serial console though
wallshot: oooh, i thoguht you meant change the password they give you [for the portal site] on the portal site
mattx86: sorry, I meant both - portal and OOB passwords
jlgaddis: what, exactly, are you trying to do?
nevermind, it's ifthen
mattx86: jlgaddis: I think we're unecessarily babbling on, in respects to what ifthen needs :)
ifthen: I lost my su status. I need to get it back by rebooting.
jlgaddis: you lost your vps root password?
ifthen: to reboot i want to see the console
wallshot: ya know i had assumed oob pw == portal pw. wasn't til i went back to look at the oob info -after- changing my portal password that i see they're not really in sync
ifthen: no I haven't lost any passwords. I changed my username and lost my su status as a result.
jlgaddis: ahh, okay
wallshot: so console in and login as root
ifthen: username on freebsd
jlgaddis: just log in as root at the console
wallshot: no need to take downtime
jlgaddis: add your uid to the wheel group
ifthen: I can't be root
jlgaddis: you did say freebsd, right?
ifthen: yes
mattx86: wallshot: re: ah, yea. I think I was thrown by that initially, fwiw
jlgaddis: you disabled the ability for root to login on the console?
wallshot: why? did you set console to insecure in /etc/ttys?
ifthen: when I go #su I get sorry
wallshot: don't su
login as root
jlgaddis: *LOGIN* as root
not su
wallshot: login: rootnpassword: root'spasswordn
jlgaddis: login: root
heh, yeah
wallshot: just need to vnc into console to do it
or be using an OS that comes with sshd allowing root by default
ifthen: ok good, as soon a I can get a vnc to the console I'll try it
jlgaddis: have you created a public key and added it into your account on the portal?
ifthen: yes I have done all that and can ssh in, method B
But I want to get vnc working.
jlgaddis: yeah, you're gonna need it to get to the console
ifthen: I want both methods to work.
mattx86: ifthen: it's no different, really. unless you want to reinstall via the ISO in your virtual CDROM drive
in which case, you can tell it to boot the ISO, in order to so
ifthen: that aside, depends on how you're doing it. if doing it unencrypted, it should just work
ifthen: well maybe I could do it just with the method B pure ssh but I still would like to get a vnc connection and login like others have.
I don't like this locked out feeling.
mattx86: ifthen: hm.. are you wanting the VNC login for a desktop-like experience?
ifthen: yes
also to see the boot progress and menu on reconfiguring freebsd. I need to get ports.
jlgaddis: portsnap fetch && portsnap extract
you know, freebsd in a vm on your desktop might be a cheaper learning experience
mattx86: I dunno.. I mean, generally out-of-band management is used to regain access - not 'full time' access or such. (I don't know that ARP would be happy with that?)
jlgaddis: i don't think it'd be a big deal
mattx86: boot progress aside, you can always setup a vnc server and login to it like that
***: Tadaka has quit IRC (Quit: Computer has gone to sleep)
jlgaddis: i could see some paranoid folks having sshd, etc. permanently disabled
mattx86: ah
jlgaddis: ssh to conserver, tunnel vnc over ssh to get to the console
i only permit ssh from specific ip's so if i'm somewhere else and need to get in i have to do that anyway
mattx86: yea, true
could do port knocking too :)
jlgaddis: kludgy hack
mattx86: meh ;)
ifthen: well you guys went a little over my head but np, My immediate objective is to get connected via cotvnc or equivalent and regain my su status with a reboot.
jlgaddis: you don't need to reboot
and rebooting by itself won't fix the problem
ssh to the console server: "ssh username@console.cust.arpnetworks.com"
hit "t" once logged in and it'll give you the exact command to cut and paste into a terminal to set up the tunnel
"ssh -f jeremygaddis@console.cust.arpnetworks.com -L 5955:kvr04.arpnetworks.com:6032 -N", in my case
take that first number (5955) and subtract 5900 = 55
fire up cotvnc, host = localhost, display = 55, password = whatever, hit connect
you should be looking at your console, login using root and your root password
"pw user mod <username> -G wheel" should add your unprivileged user to the wheel group
up_the_irons: you can, but through a support request
(that was actually in reply to: │16:26:04 jlgaddis | i don't think you can change the password for the serial console though)
-: jlgaddis nods
ifthen: Would I wind up as a user with root privileges or as the su?
jlgaddis: you'll wind up with your user being in the wheel group, which is what allows su'ing
ifthen: Well I am grateful for the energy put into my problem and I see a pre-requisite is to get a vnc client running so I'll work more on that. I do wonder what broke cotvnc. I have rm'd it from my disc.
There seem to be only a few clients which will run on this book.
bbl I have to drive now.

either that, or slay the fell beasts in the tower ;)
