Does TigerVNC have a place to put a login name, even though it is not needed at ARP?
ifthen: I don't believe VNC uses a login name; only a password.  or at least that's how it seems to be with TigerVNC
same with cotvnc but the login screen keeps wanting one or won't take the pw from the arp site
vnc does only use a password

after i connect, when i'm staring at my console, i see my freebsd login asking for a username ;)
well I've tried my freebsd username and it's not working iirc
next time i am able to connect will try it again.
usually I just specify the IP and port/display number on the command line, and once it connects, pops up a password dialog, and when entered, I see the console of my VPS or what not
I have never seen that console. It's my grail.
and from there, I proceed to enter my username/password that's on the VPS, as if it were a standard box that I was physically sitting in front of
it should have nothing to do with your freebsd username, as the vnc server is not tied to your system (except that it shows you your system once you connect)
should be nothing you can do on your vps that would affect the vnc connection
except possibly shut it down, that might cause vnc to crap when there's no console to display

well, as far as the portal site and out-of-band management passwords go, if you can't change them via the portal, I'd guess support could change it for you

well you guys went a little over my head but np, My immediate objective is to get connected via cotvnc or equivalent and regain my su status with a reboot.
you don't need to reboot
and rebooting by itself won't fix the problem
ssh to the console server: "ssh username@console.cust.arpnetworks.com"
hit "t" once logged in and it'll give you the exact command to cut and paste into a terminal to set up the tunnel
"ssh -f jeremygaddis@console.cust.arpnetworks.com -L 5955:kvr04.arpnetworks.com:6032 -N", in my case
take that first number (5955) and subtract 5900 = 55
fire up cotvnc, host = localhost, display = 55, password = whatever, hit connect
you should be looking at your console, login using root and your root password
"pw user mod <username> -G wheel" should add your unprivileged user to the wheel group

Well I am grateful for the energy put into my problem and I see a pre-requisite is to get a vnc client running so I'll work more on that. I do wonder what broke cotvnc. I have rm'd it from my disc.

jabber is something we use extensively at work.  so if we *needed* one,  we'd probably set it up.  (Our core services are based around XMPP)
