http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQFEY9RIRJA hey up_the_irons :) don't ever do that again ;) haha lol @ cricket :) there's a name i can't see without thinking of that gross tapioca-filled drinks they sell down the block i once asked them for a smoothie, and they had the audacity to decide i wanted it full of boba. i don't go there anymore. sometimes i wonder if up_the_irons runs arp all by himself maybe he's the Garry who has handled every support request i've put in. =D LOL, I am that Garry :-D you rock, Garry thanks for all the support replies jpalmer used to help with DNS requests, but those all went to zero once the Reverse DNS Manager was implemented no problem oh. i owe you a reply still i think, i' meant to but kept putting it off you setup my bandwidth graph and pointed at the twitter info about updating to current plans thanks a ton! oh jeez, that was over a month ago. i'm a jerk. bbiaf lol GARRY ROX MY SOX TOO WALLSHOT up_the_irons: whats the charge for an OS change? nesta: http://support.arpnetworks.com/kb/vps/re-install-or-change-os thnx wallshot: no problem, i take no offense to non-replied support tickets (less work for me ;) nesta: np Nestea, cotvnc users, where is the best copy? Mine suddenly stopped connecting and I need a good fresh copy. Sourceforge was the last. Or is there anything else that will run on this white Macbook? OSX 10.5.8 ifthen: try TigerVNC: http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/tigervnc/index.php?title=Main_Page#Downloads It was connectint me to the QEMU screen at kvr... and just stopped doing that. seems alright on linux matt I will check it out. Does TigerVNC have a place to put a login name, even though it is not needed at ARP? ifthen: I don't believe VNC uses a login name; only a password. or at least that's how it seems to be with TigerVNC same with cotvnc but the login screen keeps wanting one or won't take the pw from the arp site vnc does only use a password i could never log in but i suppose there are enough forks of it now that someone may have rolled some username support into one wallshot do you get asked for a username when you connect? can't recall ever being asked for a username on vnc after i connect, when i'm staring at my console, i see my freebsd login asking for a username ;) well I've tried my freebsd username and it's not working iirc next time i am able to connect will try it again. usually I just specify the IP and port/display number on the command line, and once it connects, pops up a password dialog, and when entered, I see the console of my VPS or what not I have never seen that console. It's my grail. and from there, I proceed to enter my username/password that's on the VPS, as if it were a standard box that I was physically sitting in front of it should have nothing to do with your freebsd username, as the vnc server is not tied to your system (except that it shows you your system once you connect) should be nothing you can do on your vps that would affect the vnc connection except possibly shut it down, that might cause vnc to crap when there's no console to display I see only QEMU interface. When I am able to even connect. ifthen: hm.. so you see the QEMU BIOS output, but it's not booting the OS? It tells me it is freebsd and asks for a username and pw I expect a control panel or something but i've never seen it ahh so it seems you're getting your VPS's console well that's what I'm after... out of band thing first option I have got access with SSH working But i'd like to see the panel so i can reboot and get a new password ifthen: ah, for that, have you been to: https://portal.arpnetworks.com or superuser status back boot into single user mode from the console I don't think you can change the password they give you on the portal site and via the out of band management (or can you?), but yeah, you can certainly change your root password, etc maybe i misunderstood what ifthen is trying to do (since i just walked in)... i'll go back to shutting up. =) matt i think i am referring to to the url u just posted. well, as far as the portal site and out-of-band management passwords go, if you can't change them via the portal, I'd guess support could change it for you that would almost certainly be considred a bug, if you can't change the password but i don't see where it would be available either yep there it is: https://portal.arpnetworks.com/accounts/589/edit last I checked (portal at least), you couldn't(?) okay don't go edit my account go edit yours ah lol but you get the point there's that, but can you change the OOB password? "Edit Profile" in the main menu you can change your portal password i don't think you can change the password for the serial console though oooh, i thoguht you meant change the password they give you [for the portal site] on the portal site sorry, I meant both - portal and OOB passwords what, exactly, are you trying to do? nevermind, it's ifthen jlgaddis: I think we're unecessarily babbling on, in respects to what ifthen needs :) I lost my su status. I need to get it back by rebooting. you lost your vps root password? to reboot i want to see the console ya know i had assumed oob pw == portal pw. wasn't til i went back to look at the oob info -after- changing my portal password that i see they're not really in sync no I haven't lost any passwords. I changed my username and lost my su status as a result. ahh, okay so console in and login as root username on freebsd just log in as root at the console no need to take downtime add your uid to the wheel group I can't be root you did say freebsd, right? yes wallshot: re: ah, yea. I think I was thrown by that initially, fwiw you disabled the ability for root to login on the console? why? did you set console to insecure in /etc/ttys? when I go #su I get sorry don't su login as root *LOGIN* as root not su login: root\npassword: root'spassword\n login: root heh, yeah just need to vnc into console to do it or be using an OS that comes with sshd allowing root by default ok good, as soon a I can get a vnc to the console I'll try it have you created a public key and added it into your account on the portal? yes I have done all that and can ssh in, method B But I want to get vnc working. yeah, you're gonna need it to get to the console I want both methods to work. ifthen: it's no different, really. unless you want to reinstall via the ISO in your virtual CDROM drive in which case, you can tell it to boot the ISO, in order to so ifthen: that aside, depends on how you're doing it. if doing it unencrypted, it should just work well maybe I could do it just with the method B pure ssh but I still would like to get a vnc connection and login like others have. I don't like this locked out feeling. ifthen: hm.. are you wanting the VNC login for a desktop-like experience? yes also to see the boot progress and menu on reconfiguring freebsd. I need to get ports. portsnap fetch && portsnap extract you know, freebsd in a vm on your desktop might be a cheaper learning experience I dunno.. I mean, generally out-of-band management is used to regain access - not 'full time' access or such. (I don't know that ARP would be happy with that?) i don't think it'd be a big deal boot progress aside, you can always setup a vnc server and login to it like that i could see some paranoid folks having sshd, etc. permanently disabled ah ssh to conserver, tunnel vnc over ssh to get to the console i only permit ssh from specific ip's so if i'm somewhere else and need to get in i have to do that anyway yea, true could do port knocking too :) kludgy hack meh ;) well you guys went a little over my head but np, My immediate objective is to get connected via cotvnc or equivalent and regain my su status with a reboot. you don't need to reboot and rebooting by itself won't fix the problem ssh to the console server: "ssh username@console.cust.arpnetworks.com" hit "t" once logged in and it'll give you the exact command to cut and paste into a terminal to set up the tunnel "ssh -f jeremygaddis@console.cust.arpnetworks.com -L 5955:kvr04.arpnetworks.com:6032 -N", in my case take that first number (5955) and subtract 5900 = 55 fire up cotvnc, host = localhost, display = 55, password = whatever, hit connect you should be looking at your console, login using root and your root password "pw user mod -G wheel" should add your unprivileged user to the wheel group you can, but through a support request (that was actually in reply to: │16:26:04 jlgaddis | i don't think you can change the password for the serial console though) Would I wind up as a user with root privileges or as the su? you'll wind up with your user being in the wheel group, which is what allows su'ing Well I am grateful for the energy put into my problem and I see a pre-requisite is to get a vnc client running so I'll work more on that. I do wonder what broke cotvnc. I have rm'd it from my disc. There seem to be only a few clients which will run on this book. bbl I have to drive now. would anyone be interested in jabber.arpnetworks.com, a free jabber server? not sure why companies offer free jabber servers, but there tend to be a lot out there, and sometimes i need one for myself... Sure. Why not. 1 vote up_the_irons: I'm not sure. for the most part, I use google talk for jabber services. but I'd possibly be interested in one where.. we can do MUC's jpalmer: yeah i'd enable all the extensions for fun :) jabber is something we use extensively at work. so if we *needed* one, we'd probably set it up. (Our core services are based around XMPP) cool I do my best to avoid IM services ;) I like the nature of IRC better although, apparently MUC is IRC-like ? similar, yea tbh, before I googled for it, I thought you meant some sort of XMPP version of a MUD/MUCK ;) hehe. I'm WAY too busy these days for such frolic-ary! :) me too. I'd like to get back into MUDs though ok, quick vote: pre-order a kindle-fire, or no? I used to code on a godwars2000 codebase. was pretty popular for several years. I have over 300 simultaneous players during peak hours. s/have/had/ I'd like an 'e-reader' one of these days. sony and kindle have appealed to me wow :P that's awesome IIRC, I liked to play Merc MUDs.. silly me, I'd navigate to one of the merchants, buy an ice wine, drink it, and attempt to talk to the other players :) either that, or slay the fell beasts in the tower ;) it's been years. but I *think* the gw2k codebase, was a fork of a Merc yeah, according to wikipedia's Merc (MUD) page or atleast "GodWars" good times if they didn't focus so much on the drama, and focosed on the shooting.. I'd not hesitate. what channel is that on? I've heard of it before i think history channel ah
