awyeah: I'm looking for a small switch that can do port-based 802.1q VLAN tagging
The cheapest I've found is this: http://www.netgear.com/business/products/switches/smart-switches/GS108T-200.aspx
But I'm hoping I can find even cheaper ;)
mattx86: awyeah: I've never tried it, but you might take a look at the RB250GS: http://routerboard.com/RB250GS
http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/SwOS#VLAN_Tab
er, http://routerboard.com/ shows the price for it - $39.95
as for an 8-port 10/100/1000 w/ 802.1q tagging, the GS108 series seems to be the cheapest in my search. you can also check sites like shopping.google.com and ebay for the best deals
awyeah: sweet
$39.95 is certainly nice and cheap. :)
Basically, I have a router, which is configured for all the VLANs, and all untagged packets. Then I have a wireless access point that handles VLAN IDs 101 and 102
and I have an unmanaged switch that just passes everything
I need a managed switch so I can assign one of the wired ports to VLAN 101, so I can get it in the same broadcast domain as the wireless SSID that's in 101.
Wow, it looks like this can do it. I've heard about Mikrotik before but have no experience, is their stuff reliable?
And by reliable, I mean as reliable as other small-business class or high-end consumer class stuff.
mattx86: it's pretty good stuff, but can definitely be buggy. I would suggest testing a configuration prior to going live with it (really, that should always happen). That, and wait before upgrading production to the latest version, to see what others are having problems with. (That should always happen too, or something to that effect.)
other than that, I do have an RB532 system from them, from back in 2006 or 2007 that I still used to this day, with the latest version of RouterOS (free upgrades)
