e you all get an F! thanks for playing! :p I've never gotten an F in my life. I'll contact the board to investigate the teaching and scoring practices in your class. lol heh. got a careerbuilder recommendation for an "Epic Administrator" position.. it was funny until I realized there's such a thing as Epic and that's what they're referring to ;) quiet here again. :) welp, it's time to go jog the nature trail and give the mosquitos something to feast on in the process I really should do this in the morning ah well :) feel the burn heh Hello. I will be getting a VPS with arpnetworks and I have a lot of newbie questions. Like, what do I need to do to run the BSD os from this Macbook on xterm? What do I do first when I get the keys? ifthen: it sounds like you might be new to unix in general. No I have had shell accounts since late '80s but never more than a user. If that is the case, I don't mean to sound rude.. but ARP probably isn't the best provider for you. one of the ways ARP lowers their prices, is to provide support only about once a day.. so the customer is expected to be self-sufficient and proficient. If you are going to depend on support (and it sounds like you might) there are probably better alternatives for that. if you're ok with not having 24.7 support, they'll send you a welcome email with the connection info for your VPS. once you have that, you just upload your SSH keys, and go on about your business I seldom call support. Once a day would be unlikely.. OK thanks, are those keys at my shell providers or time-warner here? neither. they are the ssh keys you generate. have you used ssh before? yes I use the syntax a lot but very simply. SSH seems to run autoatically between my shells. except for 1st connection. right. the "automatically" part, happens after you upload your keys. so is it the same as 1st connection to a new isp machine ie. between rexx.com and prismnet.com? am I still here? you're still here. I just don't know how to answer that question. so back to your original question: you'll get connection info in your welcome packet. You'll use that info to upload your SSH keys. from there, it's your machine and you are the admin. it's your responsibility to run it Thanks. another question: If I ssh -X into my machine from Venice will I be able to watch utube? if you configure it to do so, sure. so it is pretty fast? fast is relative. if you're talking about bandwidth, they have a file you can download to see the speeds. http://www.arpnetworks.com/100mb.bin 100 meg file. you can download it and see actual throughput to your site. i did that and I think it was fast but don't know how to interpret the #s as to the feel with movies etc. anyone doing it? jpalmer thanks so much. if you have any further thoughts please put them up and I will check back periodically. I appreciate your explanations very much.
