[07:54] hi YesThatTom [07:54] I can try [07:55] I need help with growfs. arpnetworks increased by disk and now i need to grow it. "growfs -N /dev/ad0s1a" says "not enough new space", which says to me I need to bsdlabel it first. Not sure exactly how to do that. [07:57] have you read the bsdlabel man page? [07:57] yes [07:59] the thing is... i swear i did this a long time ago but i didn't take notes :-( [08:00] *** jlgaddis is now known as Y-U-MAD-MT [08:01] *** Y-U-MAD-MT is now known as jlgaddis [08:01] ;-( [08:02] ah, i found an old email. arpnetworks did it the last time. i found email saying that they'd be taking the VPN down for 20 minutes to do it. [18:14] it's an easy upgrade :) [18:15] will zfs just see a bigger space? there's gotta be a procedure for that, I presume. [18:15] some things I've seen say just delete the gpart and recreate it [18:15] it won't hurt the data [18:15] still seems scary :) [18:17] on a related note, elastichosts suggests not creating a swap partition at all. [18:17] if you don't have enough memory, apparently paging to their disk is ugly [18:17] they just recommend buying enough virtual memory [18:17] that smells like a recipe for panic though [18:17] of course they recommend the approach that gives them more revenue. [18:18] Yeah, I guess 4GB of ram is always going to be more expensive than 4GB of disk [18:18] And if paging to disk on their VMs is problematic, their VM system is badly broken. [18:19] Paging to disk is no different than flushing cache to disk, so that would be problematic as well if there's any truth to the statement at all. [18:23] up_the_irons? [18:29] RandalSchwartz: If it's running ZFS, just have up_the_irons add the additional space as another disk, then add that disk to the zpool. ZFS will automatically add the space and start using it. [18:29] (Assuming the VMs support more than one disk) [18:32] I'm trying an experiment right now [18:33] Took a VMware 8G disk, made it 12G, and used the fixit shell to fix the geometry [18:33] had to add a "gpart recover" step [18:33] let's see if ZFS recognizes the additional space [18:33] woo hoo... it does [18:33] so that's trivial [18:34] that's the recipe [18:34] 1 - increase virtual disk [18:34] 2 - boot DVD [18:34] 3 - go to fixit shell [18:34] 4 - "gpart recover da0" [18:35] err ad0 [18:35] ++gpt ++zfs [18:35] 5 - "gpart resize -i NNN ad0" (where NN is the partition of the freebsd-zfs) [18:35] 6 - reboot [18:35] and it Just Works [18:35] this presumes your zfs partition is the last one on the disk [18:36] now to make the request formally for neil's machine [18:36] the "resize" command automatically means "rest of disk" [18:36] very cool [18:37] can't shrink this way, of course [18:38] ZFS doesn't support pool shrinking (yet) anyway. [18:38] right [18:38] It is/was in the works. No idea if Oracle scrubbed it when they bought Sun, though. [18:42] up_the_irons - did you see that last exchange there?
