If you assume identical hardware and the same set of features used in both OSes Solaris is faster for ZFS-backed CIFS, but FreeBSD is faster overall, mostly because it does a better job of leveraging the hardware. The main reason for Solaris being faster for CIFS has nothing to do with FreeBSD except that on FreeBSD you're stuck with Samba, which is a horrible pile of crap. That said, my file server at home is entry-level desktop hardware with a 3-disk RAID-Z running 8.2-R and it can keep gigabit ethernet saturated with Samba traffic. pilgrim: you think freebsd can leverage hardware better than opensolaris? Given identical hardware, yes, I think FreeBSD gets higher performance. Good day ;) how is everyone? I can only speak for people in my immediate vicinity they seem to be functional :) awesome :) just got back from my first trip to the US by myself first time flying as well first time flying? how young are you? :) RandalSchwartz: sorry was checking out my dad's kindle, I'm 23 I got a job at a company in Boston, went down for training Oh hey that's where I live. sweet! How'd you enjoy the city? I wasn't right in Boston, was in Needham / Newton Oh, I see. it was nice, the roads are a bit archaic but it was definitely cool very old buildings I was down there at the worst time, I'm from Vancouver... Hah, ah yes. Now is not a friendly time in Boston-vancouver relations. haha it was mostly good, I was a bit freaked on the night of the game because I was at a bar packed with Bruins fans so I kept my cheering to a very minimal level... not that there was much to cheer for :p Luckily I wasn't even in Massachusetts that night. As you well know, rioters tend to come out during big sporting events. I spent a year living next to the baseball stadium (Fenway Park). Came home one night to find a truck, upside-down, in my doorway. ouch! have you been to Blue on Highland? I have not. I tend not to venture out towards Needham.
