:D
[09:37]
RandalSchwartzwell - that's the problem if it's all it's used for
just like people think torrents in general are bad because they *can* be used for bad stuff

toddfhaving a currency not in control of any government sounds good, so long as the underlying principals are generally uncorruptable. I'd welcome stable prices vs constantly fluctuating prices. hate to tell clients 'because of inflation, you now must pay me more'
even if it in essence means 'paying same value, just bigger numbers' .. not looking forward to when arp must go that route .. ;-)
[10:06]
reardencodeThere's some guy who will accept bitcoin and sell you amazon.com giftcards
can't seem to find the site at the moment
[10:07]
toddfin what currency? ;-) [10:08]
reardencodehttp://spendbitcoins.com/
USD afaik, he uses the 24hr mtgox (largest exchange) exchange rate
[10:08]
RandalSchwartzin theory, having a currency not in control of any government might sound good, until you realize that means every government will wonder "hey, why aren't you trusting us" and consider you a criminal by default. [10:12]
toddfthats the 'worst case' scenario [10:12]
RandalSchwartzno - it's the "very likely case" scenario [10:13]
toddfif everyone were using it there would be no choice [10:13]
reardencodeyeah, it's going to be interesting as the feds start to crack down [10:13]
RandalSchwartzwe're in a world where having more than 3 oz of liquid makes us a terrorist
and not everyone will use it
just the criminals :)
[10:13]
toddfI'm surprised nursing mothers are permitted to travel in that world [10:13]
RandalSchwartzright - there are all sorts of exceptions that make the rules ludicris
which proves even further that we're all messed up already
and bitcoin isn't going to get any fairer treatment
[10:13]
reardencodethe feds have arrested plenty of people for running alternative currencies int he past [10:14]
RandalSchwartzremember when they started talking about charging sales tax for Linden-Dollars transactions that were entirely in-game [10:14]
reardencodesee e-gold
libertydollar etc.
[10:14]
RandalSchwartzI don't recall what came of that, but that's how the People In Charge think and act. [10:15]
toddfuntil some large enough group of people elects to convince them otherwise. [10:15]
RandalSchwartzthey'll probably do things like "ok, you can use bitcoins, but in areas that collect sales tax, you'll be required to post the right tax"
and then send you to jail for violating that law
[10:15]
mike-burnsIt makes sense that they'll still want to collect taxes. [10:16]
toddfI don't have sales tax on my services. I don't sell hardware. no problem for me.
I didn't note sales tax on ARP's invoices.
[10:16]
RandalSchwartzthere's sales tax even for services in florida.
it's crazy out there.
and don't imagine california is too far behind with the budget crisis

jazz57up_the_irons: Any idea what is going on with routing to google? It takes like 150ms just to get to any2ix. [14:40]
up_the_ironsno clue [14:40]
jazz57Looked good from PacketExchange lookiing glass before they took down the site.
Too bad I can't see the reverse route.
Maybe Express Peering is sending the traffic through London. Very similar pings to UK.
[14:40]
up_the_ironsjazz57: any way I could help you see the reverse route? [14:46]
jazz57I think we need to get a traceroute from google to diagnose it.
I don't think they have a looking glass.
[14:48]
...... (idle for 26mn)
vcsyet im getting the same ping times as well :P
yep*

jazz57vcs: PacketExchange used to have a traceroute and that had reasonable times when I checked. Unfortunately, that's gone now that gtt has taken over.
up_the_irons: Was hoping you had diagnostic powers that mere mortal users don't.
[15:23]
vcsyeah lol it goes from like
8ms
to 150 in one hop
from texas time is 30ms~
[15:25]
jazz57From my home it's 30ms also.
(In Palm Springs, CA)
[15:26]
vcsahh [15:27]
jazz57It takes like 20ms on my cable connection just to get to LA, so that's about right if google in in the bay area.
And 13ms from my Irvine server.
So, yeah, google is seeing an advertised route to ARP that's suboptimal.
[15:28]
vcsyep
maybe the chinese decided to take it again
wait 15 minutes will be fixed
:P
[15:30]
jazz57They're analyzing our search traffic. [15:31]

jazz57Hmm... Here's my trace: http://pastie.org/2069372
Notice AS10026. If that's accurate, then we're routing through Asia somehow.
[15:43]
up_the_ironswhat in the hell
that is fucked
jazz57: you may notice it is fixed now; i shutdown my PacketExchange eXpress Peering neighbors
[15:48]
jazz57Let me try. [15:51]
up_the_ironsthat's one of the problems with peering blindly on a peering exchange; i need to instead select who gets my routes manually, but <sigh...> i don't have the time
guess i'll leave those shutdown if PE can't get their shit right
[15:52]
jazz57up_the_irons: That's more like it.
http://pastie.org/2069418
Under 10ms now.
[15:53]

jazz57Very nice. Love it. :-) [15:54]
up_the_irons:) [15:54]
jazz57up_the_irons: Are those automatic route optimizers like Internap FCP worth it? [15:55]
up_the_ironsjazz57: i really haven't looked into them much; i usually think "meh" [15:56]
jazz57While I'm at it: Have you tried peering directly with google. According to their peeringdb entry they have "a liberal peering policy." [15:58]
up_the_ironsLOL
jazz57: yes i have and they gave me the finger
;)
jazz57: although i've grown a lot since then, perhaps i should try again
they weren't impressed with my traffic levels before
[15:59]
jazz57How nice of them.
They have a policy for those with "less than 100Mbps traffic"
[16:00]
up_the_ironsreally? they didn't before... [16:01]

up_the_ironsyeah, "Peers in North America or Western Europe with less than 100Mbps peak of Google traffic may peer via route servers at participating IXes", but I don't see their AS advertising routes on Any2 IX
either way, i should email them
[16:02]
jazz57It's worth a shot. (As long as you don't mind the potential finger pointing again.) [16:03]
up_the_ironshaha [16:04]
jazz57It would be cool to have all the major search engines peeing directly with ARP.
Bing. Check.
Yahoo. Check.
[16:04]
up_the_ironshehe yeah
i peer with yahoo
[16:06]
jazz57And microsoft.
So you've got two out of three already.
[16:06]
up_the_ironsi peer with M$?
didn't know that (like, I could get their routes via a route server w/o knowing it)
[16:06]
jazz57I thought I saw MSN.
I'll have to check my logs.
[16:07]
up_the_ironsi c [16:07]
jazz57Try a trace to 207.46.199.42
That was bing bot on my site.
First hop is microsoft.com.any2ix.coresite.com
So looks like peering to me. :-)
[16:09]
up_the_ironswow i peer with M$
i gotta stop that

jazz57I won't mention the name of my other provider, but most of their traffic goes through San Jose.
Drive me nuts.
[16:15]
JuniperJaxxtoddf: hahaha ref:irssi script [16:16]
jazz57jazz57 wonders what's going to happen now that gtt has taken over. [16:17]
up_the_ironsi need to sign with level3 and screw PE (wait, now, GTT). so many problems with PE [16:20]
toddfisn't level3 the evil one? or is it just to connect so the people who can't come through HE can come through level3? [16:21]
jazz57I loved their rhetoric about "donut routing" but most of their traffic seems to go through level3. [16:22]
up_the_ironsis level3 evil? i haven't heard [16:23]
jazz57I like nLayer as they seem to do the donut thing rather nicely (having peeing with time warner cable, etc.). The CEO is also active on WHT and is interested in latency concerns.
But I guess they aren't avail at Wilshire Annex.
Trit has a global crossing connection (to be merged with L3) so it might be nice to have a Tier 2.
[16:23]
Check out how big Level3 will be after the merger with Global Crossing: http://www.renesys.com/blog/2011/04/level-crossing.shtml [16:36]
