has anyone run openbsd with smp on these VPSs?
I've not done it but there should be no issues (let us know how it goes *grin*)
aka qemu with multiple cpus works fine with openbsd, no reason why kvm with multiple cpus would work any different

without all the pain. :)
but freebsd = openbsd + better hardware support
(IMO, anyway)
and there's no real pain to all the additives other than remembering them.
Once they're set up it's pretty simple.
freebsd = openbsd + zfs-as-root + a-lot-more-packages-updated-more-frequently
that too
+ friendlier-user-community
ok, so freebsd + zfs root + jails + blowfish hashes + pf + securelevel + mount options paranoia + up-to-date packages + useful support = bestest OS evar
